A common plight, is that humans often want the "getting there" badly, but seem to forget that the "getting back" can be just as important! You can NOT plan for one without considering the perils of the return, if so, you won't make it back! You can free-dive only so far, because you have to count the time surfacing as the same amount of time you will need air. You don't set a record if you die attempting it!

Well, it's worth knowing whether the insurance was actually changed or not. If it wasn't, there goes a good chunk of his motivation, unless he was just a sadist. Don't get me wrong, it's a sketchy thing to ask, but if we're looking for motive....well, he would have needed that to actually happen before murdering her. So it's relevant. I don't know for sure whether he did or didn't kill her. Initially, it sounded like a slam dunk. And there are definitely things about the case that stand out as bizarre, particularly with the American judge. Why block testimony, for example? The dive computer not corroborating Gabe's story seems significant enough, why the claim there wasn't enough evidence? And to deface her grave multiple times after the fact doesn't make any sense. He could just be a foolish, disturbed individual. Or he could be a murderer. Ironically, no matter which is true, the legal system failed.
@pakde80022 жыл бұрын
He lied about his capability knowing he wouldn't be allowed to dive in that wreck alone, especially alone with his wife who had minimal experience. He got his wife to increase her life insurance before going half way around the world for a honeymoon where it would be impossible to check on anything odd that happened in America. We're the Australian authorities even aware of that? Then the same thing happened in the American court. Moral of the story don't get life insurance except with the condition that children are the beneficiary and the spouse can't touch it.
@pakde80022 жыл бұрын
@@sitcomchristian6886 there's no reason she would drown as long as her regulator was functioning and her tank had plenty of air, even if she sank to the bottom or was dragged along by the current she could still breathe for a long time. There's absolutely no reason he couldn't assist his wife even if he wasn't as experienced as he claimed to be and even going to the surface first to call for help there is no reason she would have died. How on Earth this was just ignored is beyond me unless the prosecutor was more focused in the dive operator. As I recall there had been some serious dive operator negligence cases around that time as diving became a very popular activity and a boon to the Australian tourist industry.

@@MsMichigan I have not read about any accidents involving hospital x-rays, most have been with faulty radiation therapy machines, lost radioactive materials, that kind of thing. Humpback whales are known for aiding all sorts of animals, humans included, in bad situations surprisingly often - it's actually possible that this whale noticed there was an issue or a threat and intentionally grabbed him to carry him up to the surface to get him away from another possible threat or something that the whale felt off about. Just a neat thing.

There's quite a famous image of Tina Watson at the moment people realised something had gone wrong. One of the divers was taking a photo of his wife, behind her is a lead diver swimming towards a figure in the distance, face down on the seafloor. It's one of those pictures that looks innocent at first but fills you with dread when you know the story behind it. I won't link it but you can look it up, it's not graphic but obviously don't if you're disturbed by that kind of thing.

So, in the end, did Gabe eventually get the life insurance payout from Tina’s death, or did the charges in Australia prevent that??
@orimiskate2 жыл бұрын
From Wikipedia: “Civil action commenced in Alabama In March 2005, Watson launched legal action in Alabama's Jefferson County Circuit Court to recoup the cost of the couple's trip after the travel insurance company refused a payout. He was seeking $45,000 for the accidental death plus compensation for trip interruption, medical expenses, phone calls, taxi fares, fees for extra credit card statements and unspecified punitive damages for mental and emotional anguish. The action was dismissed in May 2008 at Watson's request on the grounds the Australian investigation into his wife's death caused him "to reasonably apprehend that he risks self-incrimination in this case". His Australian legal team believed "it was not in his best interest" to pursue the damages claim and his U.S.-based lawyer, Bob Austin, added that his client would not be voluntarily "going back to Australia."”

God, poor Tina, she was betrayed by the one person in the world she should’ve been able to fully trust, her new husband Gabe. The court case is SUPER SUS, they refused to allow her father to give evidence, he vandalised her grave constantly (WHY?!?), and very likely killed her and got away with it. If he was smart he would start life over, but instead he just gave everyone more cause to be suspicious of him.

Story #2 - The Great Barrier Reef is on Australia's EAST Coast, not the west coast. - Divers do not inflate BCDs to ascend. They DEFLATE when ascending - These ropes are not anchor lines, they're buoy lines - It's highly unlikely he changed or repositioned his dive computer's battery so quickly at the surface. This normally needs much more time, and ideally a pressure test
