Also, Jasper had hundreds more dives, and a fresh tank - his choice to go in was also his own. The odds seem astronomical, for another diver with equipment to be there at the same time.

Long ago, i was thinking about doing a couple of dives, just to try out something new in my mid 20s. A friend of mine who's an experienced diver told me that it doesn't matter how many dives you have under your belt nor how much experience you have, so many things can go wrong down there with each dive, and it only takes a few seconds for something to go wrong and sometimes you don't even notice something is wrong until it's too late. The more divers you have, the better your chances of survival when things go wrong, especially decompression sickness. My friend said he's witnessed so many in his life surface way too fast, 2 people lost their lives from it, but the others survived. I think that's what scared me the most, and it made me not want to do any deep dives. I respect the heck out of divers. 💜🤝

In most places I'd say the chances are pretty low but if you're diving the more popular springs in Florida there's actually a decent chance that an experienced diver is somewhere in the vicinity. A good number became experienced and are familiar with the springs because they live there. There has been a few times that an experienced diver who is certified and knows the caves was actually there because they were diving that day or at a very nearby dive shop/center because they either own it or work there, this due to them living or growing up there being what got them interested in diving initially.

Even if she did have enough oxygen, it would be suicide attempting to go after and try to rescue them. She wasn't cave certified which is a huge factor, she would have just ended up being 1 more diver needed rescue. All the people calling her a coward are ignorant to the sport and probably have never left their computer chair. Cave diving is 1 of the most dangerous and technically challenging types of diving. It has killed many extremely skilled dive instructors who had many certs but not cave certs.

We've got a famous touristy cave network near us, you can only go with a guide and they have clearly marked paths and lights. Not a true spelunking experience at all, but you get to appreciate just how enormous the underground world is. Nobody has ever died there under the tour operations spanning decades. Not even the normal 'would have happened anywhere' things like strokes and heart attacks.

To be fair the last cave is described as being safe and easy to navigate most of the time, they basically did everything right and someone only died due to a freak occurrence. Its not that different to describing any other 'safe' activity. Driving a car is pretty easy if you know what you're doing. But you could just as easily have a freak accident, like a tree branch falls on your car, your tire suddenly pops etc. Just because you've done everything right and you're in a 'safe' area/activity doesn't mean you're completely without risks.

You're right, but the third one should've had a rope in the crawl space in case something like this happened, so they wouldn't get lost and make it out quickly and have arrows on the rope pointing towards the exit, anyways that's what cave divers rely upon to make it out of the cave safely.

The "Cautionary" part is more about what to do if you ever find yourself diving with such a douchebag... Warn him or her along with anyone else you can, but if they don't listen, DO NOT WASTE YOUR OWN LIFE GOING AFTER THEM!!! It's simple enough in Diving the same as it is on a motorcycle... DO NOT DIVE BEYOND YOUR SKILLS/CERT'S... On a bike, we say "Ride your own ride." AND that means, take the pace YOU are comfortable riding. Let it get a little exciting and all. I'm not advocating riding like Grandma Moses ffs... BUT when the group decides to burn rubber and throw caution to the wind, you stick to YOUR skillset. Let them go. Darwin and God can catch up to them soon and fast enough without your help one way or the other. If you can manage to a meet-up, all's well and good... AND if not, it's time to do the thinking and navigating for yourself. Simple as that. In Diving, there ARE courses and practice sessions GALORE for all this stuff. You DO get certified to be "under hard cover" and for "cave diving" specifically. You can GET certified for rebreathers and propulsion devices and all manner of crazier sci-fi BS gear... AND if you don't have the cert' for it. DON'T go in there. If you're that fascinated, ask the group "expert" where to get certified. They'll probably know or they'll know how to find out... which agency or networked group is best... AND in Florida, it's as simple as finding Edd Sorrenson... at least for the time being. GET CERTIFIED for it, and then you follow the procedures as you're taught. If you ALWAYS do that, you'll likely never EVER run into serious danger. Sure, equipment fails, and things go wrong from time to time. The point of certifications and courses is that IT'S ALREADY BEEN DONE BEFORE... SO you can find out THE best and most likely method for handling all those things... and still come back alive... all on your own, even. SO if you want to try your hand at some underwater adventure, just stick to what you know until you can find out better. Do that, and you'll probably LOVE every minute of it. If you fancy the idea of blasting down the asphalt on two wheels, GO take the MSF course and start signing up for track days and instructions, workshops, and camps. YOU CAN DO IT... AND just stick within your skills. ;o)

Honestly, my take on it is that as the most experienced person of the group, she should have ascended last rather than first, to make sure that everyone else ascended properly. Like, not so late as to endanger herself, and not to the point of forcing him up if he was intent on suicide by way of stupidity. But definitely not first after she was aware that one of them wanted to disobey safety instructions.

As a Technical diving Instructor, I was shaking my head when you got to the diver Ken looking in. The problem with scuba is you only need a basic understanding to get “qualified”. Unlike anything other than driving your car, you only have to pay for your exam to be able to go off on your own, despite what advice and extra tuition an instructor can offer. Just like when you first pass your driving test, once “qualified”, nothing stops you from driving at 100 mph on a motorway. The number of divers killed simply because they make errors associated with their inexperience increases every year. I've been on many body recovery rescues sadly.

@@Lasse3 I won’t tell you how to live your life, and diving certainly isn’t for everyone, but I hope you weren’t put off of diving by cases like this video or the original comment. An Open water diving certification is for diving to a depth of 20 meters (about 66 feet). If you stay in open water and don’t go deeper than you’re certified to, diving is incredibly safe. There is 0 risk of decompression sickness (aka the bends), and even if you completely run out of air you have training on how to safely get back to the surface. It takes pretty extreme negligence to put yourself in danger.

You know, I think the 3rd story is the first time I've ever heard one of these stories where it genuinely was an unforeseen accident. Like, every other disaster story, caving or otherwise, where something goes wrong is usually a case of negligence, hubris, stupidity, all things that could have been avoided and a tragedy prevented. Brown limestone does typically mean that it is wet, particularly if the rest of the limestone above is a different color. I wouldn't go in many caves when raining, or if it rained recently or nearby

There’s another case like that on this channel regarding an underwater cave in which every precaution was taken but an unfortunate event occurred that they couldn’t have predicted given the knowledge at the time. I won’t spoil it for you but it’s in one of the cave diving videos.

The rescuer in the second video is indeed a hero. The guy asked Jackie 2 questions. Have you been in the caves? Have you got cave diving certification? The guy jumped straight into action knowing the urgency. This tremendous man, saved the life of one diver who would have been certain death. @KMon1192 the cave was not particularly in risk of flooding, it was a freak wind storm that blew giant waves and those waves crashed over into the cave, it wasn't like they were warned before-hand, or there were heavy rain clouds or something--it was just a sad, freak accident. If you want to live your life scared of every remote possible chance of danger be my guest, but this was, and is, a safe cave and a perfectly reasonable trip, but like anything in life it can go tragically south with no warning. I would send my kid on a trip to this cave, it's not a death trap. My kid is in far more danger on the ride to school ever day than he would be in that cave

i'm so glad jackie didn't go back into the water to (most likely) get herself killed, i was afraid she might try it. i'm always so angry when more experienced divers get themselves killed doing sth they know is dangerous bcos they try to save someone from their dumb and egocentric decision. she did the right thing, but even so, i'm sure she felt terrible for his death (she was his teacher after all) and that's bad enough. i hope she found some closure. and so sad about joseph, a brave 14-yo who tried to help his friends by letting them go first and ultimately died for it. a real hero

You are correct. This was a preplanned cave dive run by "Jackies Dive School". She took unqualified divers into the cave and then left them there. It is a tiny spring with an entrance to a cave. Google image search. The only reason to dive there is the cave. Ken has been made the scapegoat. She was in charge she planned the dive and they were paying her.

@@456ironmaiden - No she didn't, that is just the story she told the police when Ken died and the maker of this video is giving her version to avoid issues. Ken is dead and she is alive. Jackie ran the dive school that arranged this cave dive and took them into the cave for a pre-planned cave dive that they had booked with her dive school. To cave dive in the US you have to be cave certified, it is a long expensive process. So she made extra money by illegally guiding unqualified divers, who she had previously taken out on other dives with the dive school she owned. Google picture search "Otter Springs Florida"! It is a small spring with an entrance to a cave. You don't go there with dive gear unless you plan to dive the cave. She told them that she was cave certified and that she would stay with them and so they would be safe. However, once there was a death they realised that under US law they would all be legally responsible for his death. It is called "accomplice liability". The fact they all planned to illegally dive in a cave and one of them died makes them legally responsible for his death. The others knew each other but Ken was just a student, so they made up this story saying that he went in unplanned and they followed to help him. What really happened is that the inexperienced divers kicked up sediment and they could not see and she just saved herself.

Crazy how many people don't listen to professionals with years of experience. There should be some sort of scare tactic when diving, something like "Do you want to die today? That's not a rhetorical question. Do you feel like drowning today? Suffocating to death on water? Do you want your last moments to be agonizing fear, regret, and pain? As you think about the friends and family you leave behind? No? Then do what I fucking say. If I tell you to surface? That's right, you surface. If you don't surface, I'm going to assume you're dead, and tell emergency services there is no rush, that you're dead, and it's just a body retrieval. Understood? Good."

Sadly, scare tactics don't always work either. There are many underwater caves where there are stark warnings - I mean literal drawings of the grim reaper, capitals letters saying things like "STOP. YOU WILL DIE!" - yet some still ignore the warnings and think they know best. I don't have any empathy for Ken, he brought it on himself. I do have a lot of empathy for Jackie since she will probably have to live with some guilt over this incident, and also the cave diving expert who had to recover his body.

I'm a young young diver, but we in Lithuania have an underwater beeper (size of a flashlight). That is turned underwater in case of emergency, signaling everyone to surface immediately. The genius of this device is in how good of a sound conductor water is and how far does this high pitch beeping travels in an underwater environment. There's not a chance anyone can miss it while diving even if they're 500 feet away. Does this exist somewhere outside of my country?

As soon as you said the ceiling looked muddy, I figured out what that meant. I love caves, not that I go spelunking, I just think the whole concept is neat. I've done a cave tour before, and it was indeed awesome. And I love water. But combine the two? Heck no! A small, completely dark, confined space that I'm not familiar with with no easy way to tell which way to go? Even worse, possibly other similarly lost and scared bodies panicking and getting in my way? Silt obscuring everyone's view so I and anyone else would have to deal with the whole ordeal while blind? No thank you! I want no part of any of that, thank you VERY much! I would rather stay outside with whatever shelter we could bring with us to set up or that I could make from available items, maybe make a fire and brew some hot tea or cocoa for when everyone gets out, and wait with a cell phone or emergency radio in case things go bad.

Yep, muddy ceiling was an easy tell for the rest. Check out the story of the divers who saved a young football team in Thailand, who got stuck in a cave that filled with water. It's unbelievable, frightening, and very moving.

Your comment about possibly meeting other cavers in a tight passage gave me chills, with no way to pass or turn around. Ugh…. I caved in Kentucky when I was in my 20s and I loved it, even the tight spaces. But the thought of caving now scares me to death. I can’t believe my friends and I pushed our luck.

The only person better than Woody Jasper to dive through silt is a man named Ed Sorensen. Ed Sorensen is literally the greatest cave rescuer of all time. He’s the bravest man I’ve ever heard of. He has even rescued one of the world renown rescuers of the Thai cave kids. The stories he and others have told were absolutely frightening. Especially one where there was a river who found an air pocket on the cieling of a cave that was just 3 inches of room where the only way to stay alive was to tilt your head all the way back and pucker your lips otherwise you’ll get water pouring into the sides of your mouth. Now imagine doing this for 2 hrs just slowly kicking with your feet and staying as still as you can cause if you create too much turbulence you’ll spread out the air bubble and die! All while not knowing if someone was coming to rescue

Sadly, if they had let cave rescuers into the cave system from above ground earlier, they probably would have saved him. That's the worst story like this I have heard.

Taking kids to that cave is a GOOD idea - you know that everything possible is done to protect them. If tragedy strikes...well, it could happen inside a classroom. You can't insulate children or wrap them in cotton wool, you have to tell them all the risks, mitigate those risks, and let them decide if the trip is worth it - and they know exactly the price of failure. By keeping them away from trips like this, all you do is let them grow into adults who don't have a clue about the real world, and who may then lead THEIR children into danger.

@Maria Abramson So you think that the school would take a cavalier attitude to safety, given that they've already suffered a one-in-a-million tragedy in the recent past? Of all the schools in the country, that one is going to check, double check and check again all the safety precautions, there's no way any of those in charge are going to allow another tragedy to occur, of that I'm certain. Accidents happen, a kid might run across the sports field, slip and impale themselves on a javelin, for example. That's way more likely to happen than a tragedy on a school caving trip - would you keep your kids away from schools that let kids chuck javelins around? You can't eliminate every single hazard, even if you wrap your kids up in cotton wool, they may choke to death on fibres.

The 2 divers who died & were never recovered in the "Devil's Hole", Death Valley, Nevada - is one that always gives me the chills. The devil's Hole is potentially thousands of miles long, and who knows how deep. Videos of seismic waves (tsunamis) at Devil's Hole generated by earthquakes in central America & southern most Mexico, are available to watch here on KZbin, and is basically proof positive of the extent of the underground complexity of this system.

I go canyoneering in Souther Utah a lot. It is one of my favorite more dangerous activities because you gain access to the bottom of canyons that are not as trafficked and you see such amazing geology and such. I am terrified of dying because a mistake like the lady made at the beginning of the video. Before I go I always have my buddy check my rig, and I do a second check myself to make sure everything is correct. I learned in the military complacency kills. And this channel tells so many stories like that. Always do a buddy check on your gear, no matter how many times you have done the rappel/climb .

I like to top rope climb too, I'm not as experienced of a climber outdoors and mainly climb in the gym and I always put that knot at the end of the rope and have my belayer check my gear once I'm tied in before I start to climb. I worked with a guy who broke his back while climbing at the same gym. His accident is the reason why you have to use agrigri belay device now.

Stephen’s gap is relatively safe, and one of the few caves that only requires 2 people instead of 3. That being said, this could have been avoided if she had someone double check her gear which is protocol. It is sad but we can learn things from these mistakes.

Wow, I've lived at two of the three places mentioned in this video and not far from the third. Hits close to home, so to speak. The cave diving around Gainesville is well known to be treacherous, and I remember reading about accidents from time-to-time, unfortunately.

Once went exploring with a few frends in the Sauloo Caves in the Philippines. There had been a monsoon a few weeks earlier that had flooded the cave system but the water had since retreated. After a few hours of explorations we saw a pink lizard-like creature about the size of a squirrel eating some lichens from the cave wall. Upon closer inspection we discovered it didn't have eyes. It was a type of cave creature that had evolved in the darkness. On our way out we saw in the mud the fresh footprints of these creatures over our old footprints from when we had walked in earlier. That's when my friend screamed. There was a trail of bare-foot human footprints over our old footprints going into the cave in the same direction we had gone previously. We had never seen anyone else in the cave the whole time, lease of all someone without shoes. Got out of there as quickly as we could.

I'm an experienced vertical caver but have not gone down Stephen's Gap without someone who knows the cave and its rigging super well, despite me having rigged and dropped much bigger pits as a trip leader in caves I DO know well. I'm sure I could safely do Stephen's Gap on my own or as a trip leader, but I'll never take that risk when it's easy to work with locals who know the cave better than I do (I've only been there twice), and learn from them. Plus, caving is best done as a social sport, I can't imagine WANTING to do a vertical cave alone

Tampa Bay Times has a good article about the second story they published in 1990 if you google buddy's name. "Woody Jasper just happened to be picnicking at Otter Springs Park. He just happened to be a certified cave diver. He just happened to have his scuba gear in his car. And some of his companions just happened to be CPR experts." How incredibly lucky are those two people? Jeez.

When Pat Boone gets lost in the caves. That totally freaked me out. I cannot phantom why so many people are insistent that Jackie is to blame. She explicitly told them not to go into the cave yet these adults decided not to listen. They even gave her the ok that they would all be ascending and would not go into it. Once she got to the surface it would’ve been incredibly stupid for her to go back in with the little bit of air left in her tank because there would’ve been one more body to recover. Once she realized that they weren’t surfacing she was trying to get help but didn’t have many options. You cannot blame or judge someone in such a horrifying, dangerous situation unless you have known that experience yourself

You should read the lawsuit that Ken’s parents filed against Jackie. It alleges that she was running “Jackie’s Scuba School” and that she brought this group to this pond with the shared intent to dive the cave. Jackie is alive, Ken is dead. So we only know Jackie’s side of the story.

If giving CPR to someone who is fully dead, you will not get a heartbeat back. That is not the purpose of CPR, the purpose is to keep blood (hopefully with a little oxygen still in it) pumping into the brain. The diver was likely ~mostly~ dead, which is really a huge difference.

When I used to live in Alabama we used to go here and camp all the time! Good ol Scottsboro, there's another cave that's really awesome there as well at the back of a cotton field close to this one. We never had gear to repel this one so we always took the easy way in and used beer and a rope to get to the acutal bottom. If you sit in the entrance when the sun starts to shine into the high opening there's a pedestal that the sun shines on like the rock in the lion king :D

i saw this second story covered on the old TV show Rescue 911. The guy Sean is calling Ron was actually named Dan, as I recall from the interviews R911 did with the actual people involved when that happened.
