I love the use of colors in this scene. Ennis is waiting in his pale apartment, with walls painted in beige and brown and a light blue sofa, his wife is wearing a salmon dress and he's wearing a light blue shirt with jeans. Suddenly Jack appears in his bright red car and wearing an red shirt. Everything was pale and dead Jack brought bright and vivid colors. In the next scene when Ennis came back home he's wearing a vest that is beige but with bright orange lining. It represents what Ennis is like outside and how he feels inside, what he hides. Everything in this movie is so well done and brilliant.

Alma is the most sympathetic character in this movie. Everyone else is culpable on some level. Ennis is sympathetic, but he's so afraid of himself it destroys every relationship he has. Jack comes across as the more sensitive one, but he's also practical and straight forward. Ennis can't cope the way Jack does. It's a great character study of a self hating gay man but as a love story, it's just brutal.

You are missing the point. They got married and had kids because they thought they'd never see each other again. But then they did and they wanted to spend every minute they could with each other because they love each other. They are true loves. They didn't abandon their kids. They still took care of them and loved them. Love is strongest force in the universe there is no stopping it. These men are not "bad". They are human.
@guhhuh1695 жыл бұрын
i'm really sorry, but i have a different opinion. first off, i know that they love each other, and i do value their love. i have nothing against it. you see, the thing is, their wives also loved them. their kids also loved them. of course they also love their kids, and their wives to some extent, but it is a fact that they love each other more. that's why they chose to run away and live together. i do not think being gay or rejected by the society (which is THEIR own fears) justifies hurting innocent people. it's love to you. but is it love to their wives? who looked up on them and loved them? is it love for their children that has to live a life knowing that the love that had created them were just a show? i don't think so. point is, if they do love each other, love each other then. they don't have to involve or hurt other people. even if the people involved forgave them, it would still be a goddamn selfish act.

Damn it, if only this is the ending when they brought a ranch. The kiss was to celebrate that they are finally together for good after moving into their own home. Love the way how Ennis couldn't wait to kiss Jack. He can no longer hold back the overwhelming joy and undeniable lust he has for Jack. When they broke away from their embrace, Jack clearly wants to kiss him too just hasn’t quite figured out how. You can tell by the look on Jack’s face that even he was taken by surprise with Ennis uninhibited passion. Pushing him backwards out of the open by clutching his collar as if he was afraid that he was going to run away and while flicking Jack's hat off so he can get as close to him as possible. Usually Jack will have to make the first move. They literally could not control themselves. They just want to be as one. When they paused to look at each other briefly and the intense look in Jack's eye, they know that this is all they ever wanted. Their eyes say it all, nothing in this world matters as long as they have each other. That is true love. To convey layers of intense emotions with no dialog. The performance from these two actors can not be outdone!

As sad as I am for Alma I understand why they did something like this. I mean even in today’s time people are so blatantly full of hate for people that they think are different, so I can’t begin to imagine what it would have been like for people in this type of situation. It is so obvious how much they loved each other. It took everything in both of them not to kiss each other right out in the open and in a way they did because they couldn’t stand not to, not to touch one another, hold one another, look at one another. They hug and kiss so desperately and with so much passion, like they had been starving, and honestly I think they were. They were almost drowning and when they got to be together it was like they could breathe again.

This movie does something not a lot of movies do. Not just taking on the subject of two men loving each other (totally normal, no problem with it, I like men myself lol) but it shows what real love is. It isn't all roses and candles, it's passionate and exciting

The acting is so good here. The look Jack gives Ennis at 2:41 is so well done, no self-consciousness on Gyllenhaal's part, and anyone who has ever been in love with another person and been reunited with them can recognise that look!

We can not deny that Alma had every reason to be angry and resentful at Ennis. It is not so much that her husband was gay. it was all about her husband cheating on her. It would not matter that much if it were a man or another woman she was cheated on. At the end of the day, she is still betrayed and made to feel inadequate. We do not see anything in the story to even suggest that she was a bad woman, mother or wife.

@@ememobongnkana I said that it is not so much that he was gay. If Ennis was open about his homosexuality, but somehow remained honest with Alma, I think they would still have ended up in divorce, but at least in better terms. Infidelity is infidelity.

After this reunion it kind of goes down hill for them. This is a time they were truely happy. From here their camping trips always ends with Jack pleading with Ennis to let go of his fear & create a life together. And Ennis turning him down, quite harshly some times.

How could Ennis possibly _not_ notice Alma's expression at 3:55? I mean, she doesn't exactly do a great job of masking her horror. If she hadn't seen the two of them together, she would've been warm and welcoming when Ennis introduced Jack. So how did Ennis not wonder then, "Why is she acting so weird? Oh shit, d'you think she...?"
@SamuelJunior_Aleixo9 жыл бұрын
+Links Fraulein Ennis didn't care for what Alma could be doing because he finally touched his one true love. For him in that moment, Alma was just whatever.
@ssian56785 жыл бұрын
I wonder why Alma didn't think something out of the ordinary could be up when her usually-antisocial stoical & apathetic husband suddenly got all excited about seeing this one guy, spending the evening jittery & nervous then bolting out of the house in broad daylight smiling like an idiot when Jack arrived. From Alma's perspective, Ennis is acting very out of his everyday character that entire day.

@@ssian5678 that's why she opened the door and looked outside, I believe she sensed the oddity in his behaviour, which lead to her seeing what she saw.. I think this movie provides real life lessons, the lies and denial may come easy at some moment but eventually destroy one's life, Ennis destroyed his life, his wife's and Jack's, just because he wasn't able to admit this fundamental truth about himself.
@livinthemind864 жыл бұрын
@@ssian5678 Most likely she'd never heard of homosexuality (I think Michelle Williams said as much in an interview), or if she did she didn't think it was a real thing. She probably did suspect that there was something unusual about Jack but she'd never have thought it was this.
@Daphne-ys4ue7 ай бұрын
My wish for those who historically, and continually, some almost 20 years later, scoff at, misunderstand, judge and shame Brokeback Mountain, is that they let it sink in that this story is, at its core, about the “destructive effects of rural homophobia”. Everyone and everything portrayed in this film is affected, scarred and hurt. The main characters are not trying to hurt anyone by their love for each other. It is the fact that they are not free to express that love which affects everything and everyone around them. In fact, they themselves are also victims because they simply cannot be free to experience that love. And Ennis is the central character whose own internal homophobia (exacerbated by a cruel and homophobic father) keeps him from being who he truly is and that he is worthy and allowed to love Jack.

I think, amongst the great producing lighting etc and the actors, the reason why this movie is one of the GOAT is because it deals with real life issues. Not Hollywood issues, make believe perfect lives, but deals with real relatable stuff and some of it is really bad. When Alma in this scene saw them through the screen door I was like OMG. But thats a part of real life to some people.
