Bringing Christopher Shea back as Keevan, is what made the entire Magnificent Ferengi episode so great. In theory they could have picked any Vorta to be the prisoner to be exchanged.. but DS9 specialized in continuity, and Keevan was so despicable in Rocks and Shoals, it was a no-brainer to bring him back and have him meet his fate!

Every funny man needs a straight man to play off of, and they had SIX funny men! Keevan was just perfect with his abyssal cynicism, total amorality, and the ways he's just sick and tired of everyone's shit. His reactions to their nonsense made the Ferengi all twice as funny. Even when he was dead, you could still feel his profound loathing and disappoint at everything happening around him.

You gotta wonder how the actor who played Keevan felt. Producers: "Hey, we'd like to bring you back for another episode." Christopher Shea: "Oh yeah? Will it be another chilling and depressing episode that illustrates the idiocy of war?" Producers: "Not exactly. It's a more light-hearted episode about Ferengi. Iggy Pop is guest starring." Christopher Shea: "Oh. Well will my ass-hat character at least get what's coming to him?" Producers: "Oh yes."

That episode made no sense, European nations make it illegal to deport, even a war criminal, to a state where they would likely be tortured and executed, yet the enlightened Federation handed him over to the Ferengi? Really sloppy writing, even if the episode was rather fun.

@@sarfaraz.hosseini Normally I'd agree. In TNG (or other DS9 episodes), that would have been the ultimate discussion of the piece, the idea of knowingly sacrificing one life to save another, especially that of a non-Federation citizen. He got the exact right amount of screentime for his arc - he was so despicable and cowardly in Rocks and Shoals that it makes his extremely humiliating and stupid death and the subsequent black comedy body-puppet shenanigans _very_ satisfying. It's a great performance, but he didn't need more episodes to complete his arc and when a character is intentionally written as this hateable, overexposure can be very grating.

I think Sisko convinced Starfleet to hand over Keevan in "The Magnificent Ferengi" just to get back at him for what he did to his men in "Rocks and Shoals". He knew Keevan was hoping to, as Bashir put it, 'spend the war resting comfortably as a Starfleet POW", and thought "nah, let's give him _back_ to the Dominion so they make him suffer for what he did." Then he had a good laugh when he learned how Keevan was accidentally shot during a petty squabble, turned into a walking flesh puppet, and left to bump his face into a wall repeatedly.

I probably would've done what Keevan done. It may not be honourable, but he doesn't really have much of a choice. What Sisko and Bashir are blatantly overlooking is that the Jem'Hadar are doomed to die either way, because when the Ketracel White expires, they'll kill each other anyway. They would much prefer to die fighting an enemy rather than each other.

Bashir and Sisko are not overlooking what you say, they could accept it if that were the real reason; they are pissed because it is obvious Keevan doesn't give a shlt about his men and their lives means nothing to them. In the military, lack of loyalty and compassion for your fellow soldiers is tantamount to a most heinous crime.

Yes most of us would probably do that, but again it is clear that Keevan doesn't care about the fact that everyone else will die. The complete lack of emotion is what maddens the starfleet officers. If i did what he did i would feel both pity for the soldiers and guilt that it had to come to that, most of us would, someone who fails to show any sympathy would probably be classified as anti-social.

@SantomPh
@SantomPh 3 жыл бұрын
The Federation's focus on science and exploration instead of conquest means there are a lot of career paths for engineers. Other races like the Ferengi and Klingons tend to look down on engineers or relegate the profession to certain parts of society like Cardassian women (though oddly enough, Dukat had to deal with a female Obsidian Order member). With humans alone the Federation reached warp capability and warp 5 within a century , invented transparent aluminium twice, learned how to time travel, replicate things, solve world hunger and even help cure the augment disease (yes, a Denobulan did the initial work).
@blastermasterguy
@blastermasterguy 2 жыл бұрын
True but they had an extreme disadvantage in that they weren't ready for war nor where they fighting it like they wanted to win. The Dominion had a virtually limitless army of cloned strong, tough, soldiers with optical camouflage, sub-space proximity mines, and starships with weapons that could penetrate Federation shields. The Federation responded to that by doing nothing new. They threw unarmored unshielded federation men and women into war with no combat training, no weapons designed to take out large contingents of Jem'Hadar, in starships designed for exploration and not combat. It took Sisko begging the Federation counsel to build any type of starship designed for combat and even then all they got was a few Defiant-class Starships, fighter craft, and a few Sovereign-class Starship (one of which, the Enterprise under Picard's command, was actually kept OUT of the fighting which was utterly stupid).

@@blastermasterguy You're right. It's funny because the Defiant class was not designed for 'traditional war' but rather, they were intended as support for a fleet during battles against the borg via organized swarm tactics. I never understood this scene, in every other episode, the Ketracel-white case wasn't a box with a few vials inside. It was a storage/replicator dispenser, it contained a computer that would "prepare" the requested number of vials. Based on the back story, the white is not replicated from scratch, but perhaps prepared from some concentrated precursor materials in the box.
@latifroberson4403

Not true, there's an entire arc revolving around the scarcity of white in the Alpha Quandrant after access to the Gamma Quandrant is cut off. Starfleet even targets white production facilities. The case stores and dispenses white, but it does not make more than it already holds. It's just refilling the vials.

I wonder what Keevan would've said if Sisko had proposed to him what he proposed to the Jem'Hadar the following day: put them into stasis while waiting for help to arrive. The only reason the Jem'Hadar 3rd didn't want to go along with that plan was that it wasn't what the Vorta said.
@thiagodeandrade7081

Yes, I wonder about that. He wouldn't risk his life for the Jem'Haddar, but why would he go out of his way to get them kikled while antagonizing his only link to the Federation he expects to treat him well? I think the script had to show how callous the Vorta was so it had to present an unbiguously moral solution the Vorta was the only obstacle to, hence stasis (and, as much as I love DS9, if it were a New Trek show, people would be calling it on the Deus ex machina).

I know Keevan is one of those characters you just love to hate, but we could also look at it this way. The Jem'Hadar are engineered to be soldiers, to fight and die in battle. Battle is what gives their existence meaning. They had no real chance of getting off-world, as they only had one vial of white left, and their chances of repairing the communications system before going mad from withdrawal were VERY low. If Keevan didn't order them to attack, they would have gone mad from the withdrawal and killed each other, not as soldiers, but as rabid animals, until only one was left. And how does that last one die? Slowly wasting away in the grip of madness and withdrawal. So one way or another they were going to die, it was just a matter of how and by whom. Thus by ordering the attack, the Jem'Hadar die quickly as soldiers, following orders just as they were made to by their gods, the Founders. Perhaps it's just me but that sounds like a much better way to die. Or perhaps Keevan was just a self-centered jerk.

Keevan can put Weyoun to shame. Weyoun tried to hard to appease everyone. He was also more of the Founders Pet. If more Vorta were like Keevan it's very possible the Dominion could have won the war. The only stumbling block is Keevan not committing suicide upon capture. Hopefully there's a way for the Vorta or dominion members not to give relevant information to the Federation.

As much as most Vorta were amoral deceivers, at least they seemed to genuinely care about their duty; Keevan was just a straight up scumbag. I'm glad he got the most ignoble death in the series: shot accidentally by a bunch of bumbling Ferengi, used as a meat puppet, then abandoned by them to walk into the same wall until either the power to the implants ran out, or he bludgeoned himself into mush.
