Great drone work. The climb is more accurately called up Medbury Hill. Reverse refers to a wye at the top of the hill where helper engines once used to use to turn around and go back down to Glenns Ferry. On Google Maps the wye location is visible at the top but has been removed now. I enjoyed the video, thanks for the post.

Thanks for that. I had researched a bit and found others naming it both so had a hard time deciding which name to say. Glad you enjoyed!

At the start of the video the configuration of the highway is very interesting. The lanes are on top of each other. And those retaining walls are massive. The vegetation changes a lot during the video. Everything is green and healthy around the river, but dry and dead further inland. The trains are awesome. It's cool to see a five unit mid-train helper set. I'm happy you could catch these UP freights for us Dan. Excellent footage as always.

Thank you Z! I know you're right those retaining walls are huge! It definitely was more dry here than farther East on the Pocatello Sub which was interesting. Glad you enjoyed!

I did enjoy watching the trains along the Snake River near Glens Ferry, Idaho. The last covered hopper car train with the 2x5x2 power set-up climbing Reverse Hill was an example of power over gravity. Thank you for taking the time back in July 204 to capture these trains as you made your way to where you could meet up with the Big Boy #4014 on its return trip from its westward journey to California. Well thanks so much Charles that is a high compliment. It is growing more than it ever has over this last year so I'm pretty happy with it. I only hope it at least keeps the pace. I will try to continue to deliver!

More good stuff you have the knack. It is always amazing how steel wheels on steel track can pull all that weight over a 2.8% grade even on rainy and snowy days. I like the long trains thru that country they go on for ever. Thank you for your time. Paul

There's a stretch of UP running along the Snake River between Eaton, ID and Huntington, OR that's very scenic. I went there with my dad and sister to watch the 2017 solar eclipse. Turned out to be a nice area to watch trains, too.

When I am traveling on I-84, I usually get off and take the King Hill Road that runs parallel to the tracks and is the old highway (before I-84 was made). My photographs are similarly obscured by smoke that seems rather common in this part of Idaho.

Thanks Dan, great stuff. Never knew Idaho was so Karen. Funny how there's greenery on the side of the track ballast. Runoff i guess? at the 4:35 mark what ws that device alongside track that looked like a camera? Never saw 5 DPUs midtrain before.
@TheRailfanDan

That's a greaser for the rails. I rarely see a 5 pack mid train as well.

It's a little surprising that they had so much power in the middle of that last train. I am sure that under PSR, they know how many locomotives they need for an entire train, I wonder if the DPU's were distributed a lot more, say in pairs throughout the train, would the destruction of knuckles, and loss of time due to train separation would go down? I wonder if the cost of dispersing the DPU's more throughout a train is more expensive than the cost of broken knuckles and trains going into emergency and the crew repairing the break?

Another great one Railfan Dan! I loved the portion where you followed the rear DPUs at Reverse Hill, ID. Is that area somewhat easy to get to or do you need 4x4? What microphone do you use for your voice over? Off topic, but any thoughts on the potential DJI ban? Have a good rest of your weekend.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 22 күн бұрын
Hey my friend thanks a lot! No every shot you saw here was easy access. I use a USB microphone which isn't really anything fancy. It's like a $50 mic from Amazon. Right now as of yesterday actually it looks like we are safe from a DJI ban for next year in 2025 but I think every year from now on there is going to be threat of a ban.

What’s is a grade when you talk about it when train goes over a hill
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 24 күн бұрын
It's the slope or how steep the land is that the rails have to accend or descend. More locomotives are needed to accend a steeper grade.
