Congratulations, I wish I would have started when I was your age I'm 64 now and I'm just finishing my 3rd mci and I learn something new everyday.

+bert dansereau Learning is what it is all about; that and trying to keep a piece of American history running and on the road!! I know this project will take years to do right, and that is what I am trying to do; make sure it is done RIGHT. I want a classy bus, built with confidence and the proper materials. I want it to last another 60+ years if possible. I'd rather spend the time to fix, restore, and convert it right so I can enjoy it for years to come after that point.

I was a scenicruisers mechanic for fourteen years, if you are planning on Jake brakes, you need to modify the battery box or the taller valve covers won't fit, did this conversion on three cruisers. was well worth it.

I can watch that 1954 scenicruiser forever. It was one of the most comfortable buses I ever rode.let me share great moments with you. My sister and I use to race to see who will get to sit upon the dog!s back,who will ride the dog!s back. She would win.we had so much fun. Hazel may your soul rest in peace, we had fun!

Eric, I just replaced the clutch and put the 8v-71 Detroit diesel back in. It runs great and have no need to swap it at this time. Maybe in the future, but for now the original will remain. Thanks man!!

Nice going, TJ! From a [point of view "been there, done that" Excellent that you put down the steel "floor", but here's a suggestion or two that will no doubt help in re-installation. Find the point that is used to air up the bus from shop air (probably near the little control panel right rear. Hook up a compressor, and jack up the bus with the air bags. Then, when you put the dolly under, instead of having to do it all with jacks, lower the bus and the engine ass'y will be "lifted" in effect.

On a much smaller scale, tiny in comparison, I pulled a 2 stroke engine apart with little to no experience or information. All I knew was that the engine was seized. I ended up breaking the bottom side of one of the pistons against the connecting rod. Rookie mistake. At the time it only coat me $25 bucks to rectify the mistake. I put that motor back together and rode that bike until a woman hit me and bought me my next bike. You learn as you go.

+Evin Koonts Thanks for the comment!! Anything can be done with passion and some mechanical knowledge. The passion is what helps me research and learn the correct way to do things. I love working on it and am glad I am able too!!

UPDATE! for crying out load. You know there are a lot of people watching that are worried about you and the cruiser. This is a large.... very large project for someone so young and the financial burden must be incredible for you. Please, ask for help if you need it, I think there is a fairly large group of cruiser aficionados, and others who could come to your aid. Good luck and god's speed!

Good Job TJ.. So when do you expect to Re-install another engine? or When you do, will you update to a newer, more powerful and possibly smaller C.I.Displacement? Something better on your fuel econ.. Any thought's about this matter ?? Sayyy 8.3-11.1ltr cummin's..

Wow! Great job on doing all that work by yourself! I can't wait to see more. Have you driven it anywhere yet?

Congrats on pulling that engine. Any updates since you pulled it?
@danieljefferson600510 жыл бұрын
I believe some of these came with dual 4 cylinder Detroits (4v71?) and some funky transmission, be thankfull you didn't have to deal with that.
@tjtheman0078 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Jefferson True... From my research and hearsay, I know that engine combination deal was a pain if any issues arose. Still would be cool to see though. Sad there aren't any around with that combination though.

Will you be documenting the clutch replacement?

If this was my bus I would have no question about replacing the radiator because of the age of this bus. The metal of the radiator by this time surely must be "rotten" and subject to blowing out due to pressure.
@tjtheman0078 жыл бұрын
+billyboi57 Yeah, I agree. I had it patched initially due to the cost of re-coring/replacing the radiator. Anywhere from $1500-$4000!! Patching it got me back up and running for now. Hear me out though, it WILL eventually be replaced/rebuilt.

Little Doggie wasn't much help in removing the bus engine, but we Love him [her] any way. Good Luck, with the bus, and pat the Doggie on the head for me. Thank You for the videos. Will be watching !

Dog provides "Guard duty" and moral support. He is also a Union enforcer to ensure TJ takes all his breaks at the appropriate times. You can see him persuading TJ to take his break @ 8:25 in the video. Very persuasive... I would vote him for Steward at the next meeting. :-}

Just replacing the clutch, some hoses, etc and then back in.
@OpenRoader10 жыл бұрын
Wow...Intense video bro! Glad you got that sucker out! So what is the plan now? Are you taking the engine some place or just doing a clutch and hoses and back in?
@danieln.siskron898010 жыл бұрын
Wow that is fricked Incredible doing all that work pulling out that engine all by your self , I admire that. but still it might be a good idea to have one other person around to help , until you get the engine bolted back down.

+serama555 any news on your bus? I get it with affording parts. I either have time, or [a little bit of] money. Never both. I have been able to acquire a couple parts for mine: new windows, Jake brake, New Hub Caps and a couple other little things.

Hi from New Zealand, Excellent videos, are you a mechanic, engineer, or welder fabricator?? You have to have some mechanical insight - Please keep us up dated, would like to see finished product. If I lived there I would help you free of charge, just to get experience so I could built me a motor home.
@tjtheman0078 жыл бұрын
+Henry Rudolph Hello from the U.S.A.!!!! Awesome to see someone from New Zealand enjoying my videos! I didn't think they'd be all that popular! I appreciate the comments!! I am actually a tech support guy who just has expensive hobbies and an AWESOME wife!!! Everything you see here is just learned as I go. I have taken some welding classes and love working on cars, so I suppose past experience is a HUGE help in this area, but honestly, just my passion, research, and learning have helped to get me to where I am today and my comfort level with working on stuff like this. I am NO professional my any means, but I hope to do a professional job on this once it is done. If your ever in the States and around the Chicago area, you are more than welcome to help me! Thanks for the offer!!! Will definitely add more videos when able. I have a lot more planned too!!

You should've done a little stress analysis on those casters before selecting them.
@tjtheman0078 жыл бұрын
+MrShobar Yep. I learned my lesson. The packaging they came in stated that they could handle 1000lbs... looks like I under estimated the weight of my engine/trans, etc. I replaced them with Steel casters and they worked much better for the reinstall.

Have you done anything in the last six months?
@tjtheman0078 жыл бұрын
+Riki B. Eyestarone Not really, but I have picked up parts :) New windows, Jake brake, and new Hub caps. Been dealing with other projects, namely my new house. Haven't forgotten about the bus at all, in fact I am working to have concrete poured on the side of my house so I can bring the bus home and have power and easier access to tools and such to make working on it easier. Just takes time and money.
@superbmediacontentcreator8 жыл бұрын
+Tj Hoekstra Well at least the world hasn't lost another Scenic Cruiser. What worried me watching you wrench in the cold is that you're never going to put her together again. Being outdoors makes it tough to control all the parts over a long term. Those greasy cardboard boxes turn into an organic mess in a year or so. I finished my GMC motorhome a couple of years ago and now it time to sell her. 1973 Glacier. I'm running out of time and while I didn't run out of money as the project's finished I have another project. Can't keep it all. Do update as you do the pour and bring the SC home. Nice to heat/cool her from local power.

You would think the manufacturer would have installed the engine in a roll out cradle like eagle and mci's and other models of gmc....

How is the work on the engine going
@tjtheman0078 жыл бұрын
+michelle shelton Engine is running fine, but is in bad need of an oil change. :) One of the next things that will be done. (Probably change all the filters too at that point; oil, fuel, etc.) The transmission... I probably need to replace the fluid and check a couple other things out there as well. After I replaced the clutch and reinstalled the transmission, 3rd gear still likes to pop out... Think it just has low fluid, but I need to find out why it is leaking... Long term plan is to replace both the engine and trans with either a 12.7 or 14L 60-series Detroit Diesel and an Allison B500 transmission. :) But that is a LONG ways away!!
