In 2014, Scotland held a referendum on whether it would go it alone as an independent country, or stay within the United Kingdom. Ultimately, people within Scotland voted to stay with the UK, but that was before the UK opted to leave the European Union. As such, politicians in Scotland are feeling like a second referendum is appropriate. So what if Scotland becomes independent today?

It is not correct to say that Spain would veto Scottish accession to the EU. Spain has already stated that it sees Scotland as a country and nation rather than a region of a larger entity

What gets me is when people say Scotland is too small to survive as an independent nation. Erm, look at nearby Denmark, Netherlands to name but two. And then there is the island of Ireland, the majority of the island which became independent from the UK is one of the richest countries in the world and now much richer than the counties which chose to remain within the UK.

That's the most ridiculous comment ever, just because other countries are small doesn't mean that we would then be the same😂 different economic interests those countries you mentioned are part of the Eu so they aren't truly independent not to mention Spain has already said that they would veto Scotland if we wanted back in the Eu because Scotland interfered in Spanish politics about the Catalonia referendum that was illegal plus Sturgeon already said Scotland would be green so we wouldn't be able to use any natural resources and then you add in borders, passport, currency military, immigration, British businesses head back down south out of Scotland plus the numbers are enough to be able to sustain a country people who work don't work can't work I think the number is around 2and a bit million out of 5 and a half million would we have the NHS? What about tax setup? there is a lot that goes into this it isn't just as simple as wanting to leave when a democratic vote had already taken place that is the very opposite of democracy😕 Also, that is why top economists have debunked Sturgeon's independence manifesto saying it won't work because there are too many uncertainties. It's also worth mentioning that many Scots voted to stay in the UK in 2014 because they wanted to stay in the EU. The UK unionists said that if Scotland applied to join the EU as a sovereign nation after independence, then the rUK would VETO us becoming a member. Between the two referendums, in Scotland, the vote to remain in the EU had much more support than the vote to remain in the UK (which itself was as high as it was, because we wanted to stay in the EU). Even many Scots who are pro-UK, are so reluctantly. Usually because they have been told that financially we're better off staying in the UK (at least this was the argument in 2014, since then the UK has committed economic suicide and implemented harsh cuts to vital services). Only 18% of Scots, according to the last census choose to identify as "British citizens".

Scotland is an energy powerhouse, producing a surplus of oil, gas and electricity, yet its people sit in cold houses, scared to use their cars or their heating with electricity and gas which was _already far too expensive_ and now the prices jumping several-fold - thus, the *unassailable* case for independence is made.

@@davidmcintyre8145 it's worse than that. Scotland is providing *over one third* of England's electricity. In the simplest terms, Scotland is directly transferring electricity generated here to England and that supplies over 9% of England's demand. On top of that, ~40% of England's electricity is generated in English gas-fired power stations. Two-thirds of the UK gas supply is Scottish gas. So that is 9% direct, plus about another 26% via our gas, then the final piece of the jigsaw is Welsh generated electricity, 56% of which is gas fired, and although there are no accurate figures, everyone and their dug knows fine well that Wales net-exports plenty of electricity to England. So that is another couple of percentage points of England's electricity supply that's due to Scottish gas. *Scotland is totally milked, and told it is poor by those feeding on it.*

Barbados recently dropped the monarchy and other Commonwealth nations are looking at doing that as well. That has to have an impact on Britain's diplomatic weight. Should've made a clarification between the Union of Crowns 1603 and the Acts of Union 1707 rather than the slightly confusing "eventually" with "The Year 1603" in the top left. Since Scotland and England 'united' into one state in 1707, not 1603. The time between was simply having the same monarch ruling over each respective Kingdom. Also, the Spanish Government at the time (2012, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spanish foreign minister) said "If the two parts of the United Kingdom are in agreement that it is accord with their constitutional arrangement, written or unwritten, Spain would have nothing to say. We would simply maintain that it does not affect us." He then added "The constitutional arrangements of the United Kingdom are one thing, those of Spain another, and it is their own business if they decide to separate from one another." But when the myth about Spain blocking a Scottish join was blasted from rooftops by unionists he then added, in 2014, that an independent Scotland's admission to the EU "can be considered" as long as the move is "in accordance with the legal and institutional procedures." Then in 2019 the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs said that Spain would NOT block Scottish membership if independence was legally achieved and such has ALWAYS been the intention of the Spanish Government. That same foreign minister (Josep Borrel Fontelles) is now the Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Spain blocking Scotland's membership is a complete and utter lie.

Every age group under 55 support independence. Those under 35, by a two thirds majority. And since the UK supreme court ruled that Scotland has no free will, in the union, and are hostage to an English dominated parliament (85% English lawmakers vs 8% Scottish) in Westminster - the support for Scottish independence has shot up. Every poll out since the verdict shows a large lead for becoming independent. The fact that England's main political parties are also all ignoring the mandate that Scots voted for, for a new referendum (which was a majority of the electorate, when all the independence parties votes are counted together), is not only antidemocratic, but outright insulting. Add that to the fact that the UK government and media are super supportive about Ukraine's right to self-determination and democracy, against an oppressive neighbour. The irony and hypocrisy is not lost on us north of the border. Of all the dozens of countries that celebrate their independence days from British control, not one has asked to come back. Yes, it might be a rough start, but I wonder how many other countries that celebrate their independence from British control regret leaving? How many are really struggling now? We're not just leaving for our generation but for future generations of Scottish people who will have full control over their own affairs, and not tied to an increasingly insular, toxic, neo liberal UK, who, even among those who call themselves "left or centrist" scoff at Scottish people having the right to decide for themselves. As if Scotland is nothing more than an home-extension for England. It's also worth pointing out that by far, more Scots voted to stay in the EU than stay in the UK, between the two referendums. We also have the fact that, throughout most of our history, our country was sovereign. Contrary to what British media would have them believe, most Scots have no ill feelings towards English people. Personally, only those, and there are quite a few, English people who think they have some sort of CLAIM or RIGHT to Scotland, do I have any dislike for. Those who recognize our right to decide for ourselves, are fine in my book. It's only a matter of time until we regain our independence. But I'd rather leave on amicable terms when we do.

Scotland currently receives much more from England than it provides (i.e. English taxes pay for their healthcare) so they're going to have to cut back on a lot of their services or increase taxes if they were the leave. Besides that they would also need to rebuild their military infrastructure from scratch which is very hard considering how tiny their economy actually is. (in effect, they're going to become a puppet state at the mercy of England anyways) Another thing is that England makes up more than 50% of their trade so if that is cut off Scotland will suffer way more than England (England can easily subsidise the trade in Europe).

This looks a lot less likely now than it did when this was made. Interesting fact: support for independence varies significantly depending on the question asked. 10% more of Scots will support the question “Should Scotland be an independent country?” then if you ask “Should Scotland leave the United Kingdom”. The other relevant facts are economic not political as correctly identified. The North Sea oil would only be two thirds Scots. The main issue is the end of the Barnett formula. This distributes public money based on need and it means Scotland receives much more public money than it raises in taxes. Independence would require major cuts in public spending.

Interesting video and I understand you have not given time to go more in depth, due to making this a 10 minutes piece. There are many other considerations which you have not highlighted and the English Parliament don't want Scots to know. That might make an interesting follow-up for you to do. Scotland leads the way in renewables and currently, through green energy produces 135% of required power for Scotland, meaning we could cover national needs and have 35% of production to sell abroad. At present the power generated goes into the UK melting pot (which it should as a union) but Scots, geographically and socially are left with the highest power costs in the UK. We are only at the beginning of renewable technology as we currently do not operate full wind or sea generation because we are unable to store this at the moment, so only generate what we currently use. This is only one aspect of many that Scots would benefit from independence.

@@New-ye2fl Well,I'm glad you asked, and you obviously didn't look very well enough. In November 2013 (well BEFORE the Scottish referendum) the Scottish government at the time and still is at time of writing this (The SNP) published a document called 'Scotlands future', Released for anyone and everyone to read and download, which was written by the SNP and Scotlands first minister and SNP leader, Alex Salmond, which said (and i quote) ""The debate we are engaged in as a nation is about the future of all of us lucky enough to live in this diverse and vibrant country. It is a rare and precious moment in the history of Scotland - a once in a generation opportunity to chart a better way. " As well as saying: ""If we vote No. Scotland stands still. A once in a generation opportunity to follow a different path, and choose a new and better direction for our nation, is lost. " The document also goes on to refer to the then upcoming EU referendum, when asked question 266 in the Q&A section, the question being (and i quote) "What impact will the Conservatives Party proposal to have a UK referendum on EU membership have?" He answered by saying (and i quote) ""It is the view of the current Scottish Government, that the only real risk to Scotland's membership of the EU, is the Referendum proposed by the Prime Minister. " ""The Scottish Government does not wish Scotland to leave the EU and does not support the Prime Minister's plans to hold an in-out referendum on EU membership." ""Following a vote for independence, Scotland will become an independent EU member state before the planned in-out referendum on the EU in 2017. However, if we do not become independent, we risk being taken out of the EU against our will. " Not only does the SNP state that they wanted to deny people be given the democratic vote/choice on whether they want to be in the EU or not, also take note of the part that states "However, if we do not become independent, we risk being taken out of the EU". In doing that, they clearly acknowledged that they knew that remaining in the UK could mean leaving the EU, so any claim that they didn't know that remaining in the UK could mean leaving the EU, is spurious. They publicly announced this, and most significantly as i say, stated this publicly well BEFORE the Scottish referendum. This was all in this open document, that the SNP had put forward as it's argument for independence, so no-one can say that there wasn't warning. It's funny that the the SNP use this as an argument, when they THEMSELVES stated that remaining in the UK could mean leaving the EU, and they were happy to state this when they thought this might work in their favour, but didn't mention it again when the referendum didn't go their way and they needed any old excuse to have another referendum again, even if that claim was based on a falsity, that didn't seem to matter to them.. KZbin doesn't do outside links, but if you give me somewhere to post you the link to, i am happy to do so; i also saved the whole thing in PDF; or you can can just type in 'Scot dot Gov Scotlands future' (the symbol dot, not the word) it's easy enough to find. I will also point out that anyone who voted to leave the UK in the 2014 referendum, would in fact be voting to LEAVE the EU, because they would be voting to leave the UK, which was in the EU, so for that reason also, this notion that they 'didn't know it meant leaving the EU' doesn't wash, because Scotland leaving the UK, would have resulted in leaving the EU, probably even sooner than the UK leaving the EU, and that's what they were voting for when they voted to leave the UK.

Where do I start, history first, the act of union was signed under duress and bribery, the Darrien scheme landowners put money into failed because English ships were blockading supplies to the colony and resupplying those people who had gone their was impossible, therefore those landowners were bankrupted, at the same time England put a blockade on Scotland, banned trade between the 2 nations and amassed an army ready to invade if the act of union wasn't passed in the Scottish Parliament. Several landowners were bribed to sign the act, which they did, when people found out what they had done their were violent riots, one English spy, Daniel Defeo that author stated for every 1 in favour of the union 99 are against and there's nothing so bad as a Scottish rabble. The real reason though for the act of union was to ensure a Catholic monarch could never be crowned in Scotland , at that time there was the old pretender living in exile in France and his son bonnie prince Charlie who had a direct line of succession but they were Catholics, in act 2 of the act of union it specifically says that Catholics cannot succeed to the monarchy and the Protestant line must be adhered to. No sooner that the ink dried on the act of union Englush troops were station pretty much in all over Scotland to ensure no armed revolt happened, unfortunately there would be battles trying to reclaim independence, there were a few victories but by the battle of Colloden where most of those fighting died, independence died with it. The brutality of those days was shocking, traditional Scots wear was banned, no man could wear the kilt, several violent events instigated by waring clans who either supported England or Scotland led to the death of the clan system and way of life, the Campbells were the worst offenders. There was a referendum in the on independence when Thatcher was in power, it stipulated that it needed 40% of all voters to vote yes and although yes won it was less than the 40% and was dropped, the second referendum the no vote won however there was evidence of tampering caught on video, there was yes votes piled high on the no table and a man was sitting crossing no on blank ballot papers at the count of the ballots, an investigation was called for but was ignored. The currency issue is simply solved, the pound was the currency before the act of union anyway, since we mint our own currency at the moment we could mint it after independence, we certainly don't need to keep using sterling and could float our currency on the market as we have a Scottish Bank, no one can stop a country using sterling, its an internationally recognised currency we would use if trading with England, Spain has already stated they would not veto Scotlands applications to join the EU, there are reasons for that, firstly they dislike the English because of Gibraltar, Scotland has excellent fishing grounds and Scotland is a country not a region like Catalonia. Scotland produces 92% of renewable energy for Scotlands needs, at the moment it goes into the national grid which means we get no benefit for our innovation and it costs us more in energy costs than the other countries in Britian, we have excellent resources, a thriving production sector, tourism as well as a financial centre, currently business leaders in Scotland are meeting to discuss their needs in an independent Scotland which is a sign that perhaps even they have realised that since leaving the EU they've decided their side of the bed isn't that good now. A plebiscite independence election is now being considered since the Supreme Court ruling that Scotland does not have the power to hold a referendum can't be the route out of the union, polls have increased support for independence since that ruling,

Without Scotlands Union to the United Kingdom, they would not have gone through the same NHS creation (which by the way, was led by a 'Welsh' man, but nobody ever mentions that).

To talk about „Scottish Independence“ is using the language of colonialism for a situation where the parliaments of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland both voted to join in political union and now one party wants that Union broken. Personally I think all citizens of the UK should have the right of self determination and the right to vote of the future of the Union. It’s not comparable to the UK leaving the EU, as the EU continues to exist without the UK, but there can be no UK once the Act Of Union is reversed.

Scotland didn't vote to join. A few wealthy lairds voted to sell our country to England. Just five years after the union was formed in 1712, every single Scottish MP in Westminster voted to leave the UK, but the overwhelmingly English parliament refused the bill.

Scotland in 2014 if went independant would have been bankrupt almost immediately as the wholesale oil price plummets from $110 a barrel to a few tens of dollars. During Covid and in the banking collapse in 2008 the Bank of England bailed out the Scottish banks. If Scotland went independent it would still be dependent on the Bank of England, then a foreign bank. Scots are if anything sensible enough when push comes to shove not to be financially decimated. Scotland trades 4x more with England than the EU. Head should always rule heart.

Only trade works both ways ! England will boycott Scottish oil , gas and renewable energy from a newly independent Scotland? No i didn't think so either . England not only will lose energy rich Scotland. They will be energy poor . Much poorer than now . This Brexit Empire UK , will continue to crumble with Northern Ireland and Scotland's Secession, the Brexit Empire will have to survive without Scotland and Northern Ireland and be e en more isolated than it is now . With 'Lesser Britain ' / England and Wales, on a divergence path away from the European Union with depleted energy resources, a independent Scotland will for sure need to find it feet , at the same time Lesser Britain/ England and Wales will have it's energy resources feet cut off . Can a England and Wales /Lesser Britain on a diverging path away from the European Union thrive? Can England even survive without Scotland? I ask that as a serious question? Kind of like how the UK is massively in debt. It's debt exceeds its entire GDP. And despite this, what has the UK got to show for being in debt? A crumbling infrastructure. Shit public services. Shit education system. Shit crime rates. Shit poverty rates. Shit housing market. Shit stagnant wages since 2008. Shit energy prices. Shit inflation rate compared to other countries. And far worse trading situation than we had in 2014. Scotland absolutely made the wrong decision in 2014, and now we're literally paying for it.

So... 1) Currency - an Independent Scotland, using its $330,000-per-Citizen Oil/ Gas Reserves value as a Sovereign Fund [as Norway already does] can monetize this asset in the form of Crypto Currency. Like Nicaragua does. Citizens get a "Private Key" to access their "Wallet" of value. Really: What is "currency" after-all? 2) EU membership ⚫️ "Black-ball" by Spain. Propose a Scotland-Catalonia "Common-Market" right-out-of-the-chute. France & Germany did this with a "Coal Union" in the 1950s. It led to the Common Market; & that led to the European Union. 3) Brexit was wrong-headed from the get-go. Scotland no longer needs to genuflect to Kolonialists in London. 4) Ireland/Eire won its independence the Hard Way. "United Kingdom" is aspirational: Not a Reality. 5) "United States" also ceased to exist following Bush v Gore in 2000 A.D.

I want nothing more for Scotland than what England has. A government accountable to us, and not one chosen for us by our neighbour, that vetos local bills in Scotland, that doesn't affect England, simply because they Tories are bigots.

Hmmm... your research wasn't as thorough as it should have been, or you'd have known - much of the work of how an Indy Scotland would work, has already been done, ie CommonWeal, & by Tim Rideout on Currency, a Constitution is being written by Sara Salyers etc. Your non-reporting on this work being done, would seem to suggest you aren't keen to report fairly or honestly. For one, the question of joining the EU. Did you mention there are new Independence parties that have other ideas? SNP have put policies in place which the Scots didn't vote for. Thousands of women (and men who support them) will no longer be voting for that SNP party. So you have to ask yourself - will SNP & their 'white papers' with their choices of independent policies, even be relevant when Indy comes? And so that brings me to the question of Indy Scotland joining the EU - the new ALBA Independence party's policy is to join EFTA, which can be done within a COUPLE OF WEEKS. (YES, the work has been done on this by SSRG & Dr Mark McNaught, already and has been told by EFTA an Indy Scotland will be welcome! They just have to be capable of signing Trade Agreements independently without hindrance by any other govt. Being in EFTA will allow Scotland to start trading in a relatively quick time, we will be able to join the Customs Union & the Single Market & can choose what other pieces of the EU policy we wish to join. There are 4 other countries in EFTA, ALL of which have stated iScotland would be welcome. And in the fullness of time, IF Scots indicate they wish to rejoin the EU, then it will be for Scotland to have a Ref & see whether that is still SCOTLAND'S choice. Scotland is ALREADY fairly EU compliant. If they hadn't been, UK would not have gotten into the EU! And we are still capable of catching up with criteria fairly quickly. The word is that it may take about 4/5 years but only b/c we will have to negotiate our own entry position & choices - not because we will be REFUSED ENTRY. Which takes me to another point. ANOTHER ERROR in your report - Spain has never said they would not accept Scotland into the EU. That is a TOTAL FALLACY put about by the English unionists in collusion with Mr Gonzales Ponz, a member of the People's Party & a Spanish MEP, who was in NO position to & had no right to spread such nonsense but designed by a desperate WM to spread fear through a population of Scotland who preferred to be in the EU. And I could evidence that statement if I was able to put photos up of the letter giving the position of Spanish Minister of Foreign Affair and Security Policy , Mr Josep Borell - who said, "Spain would NOT BLOCK SCOTLAND IF THE INDEPENDENCE IS LEGALLY ACHIEVED AND SUCH HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE INTENTION OF THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT". And who went on to say that the European union is joined if the economic and political conditions required by the treaties that regulate it, are fulfilled. Signed: Miguel Angel Vecino Quintana for the Spanish government. You have also given a false position re Currency in an independent Scotland. SNP party asked their member, Dr Timothy Rideout, to set up a Currency Group to explore the possibilities of Scotland using her own currency in as quickly a fashion as possible after the date of Indy. Dr Rideout & his group have all the paperwork done, showing a new currency can be put into operation WITHIN WEEKS without ANY problems of going into debt & they have also got the the makings of a Reserve Bank all ready to go. The Group presented their findings to the SNP Conference in 2019 where it was passed by acclaim and Scotgov's chosen timing of 'implementing it 'within years' was voted down. You should also check out a VERY EMINENT and WORLD RESPECTED Professor Richard Murphy who has written extensively about the financial aspect of an independent Scotland & who makes it very clear that Scotland can WELL AFFORD to be independent! You can't be taken seriously unless you present ALL sides of an issue. Listening to your podcast, it sounds as though you simply listened to the unionists side of the story & didn't bother to do any research as to the work being done by people who are invested in the preparation of an independent Scotland and making sure Scotland's re-emergence as an independent country will go ahead with as little trouble as possible. There WILL be some problems - that's inevitable. And there's 320 years of tangled policies to negotiate with WM. But Scotland already has it's own judicial system, it's own education system and it's own National Health Service (it simply gets some of it's own revenue back as funding for it), and have their own Councils that already work for the communities. A Tax System designed to keep Scottish Revenue in Scotland, will have to be put in place but the collection is already a Scottish thing. Much of the infrastructure of a Scottish independent country is ALREADY IN PLACE. So it isn't going to be the 'biggie' that some people imagine. No... it won't be the simplest thing, but won't be as big as WM wants to make it, either!! And a task being difficult or time consuming, doesn't make that task not worth doing. Over half the population of Scots are willing to do what it takes, to be able to make our own choices & not have to live under England's choices. We are NOT England, we don't THINK like England, don't have the same values as England & we wish to live according to OUR OWN choices & decisions. As I am prone to saying, 'We want a vote that counts, a voice at EVERY negotiation table, and a VETO if we don't want to do something - none of which we have at the moment. INDEPENDENDENCE IS NORMAL.

Unionists carp on about the deficit Scotland would have on leaving the UK. The UK Deficit is about £17 Billion and Scotland would be expected to take a population ratio share of the deficit on leaving. That equates to £1.5 Billion (8.5% ) What Unionists don't speak about is the UK Assets which Scotland has contributed to over the past 300 years. The UK National Assets sit at over £13 Trillion. Surely if Scotland leaves the UK and has to take a share of the deficit, then Scotland should should also receive a 8.5% of the Assets. That would be £1.15+ Trillion. Makes you think, doesn't it!! And by the way much of the deficit is owned by Pension Funds and Investment Banks, Premium Bonds etc. So transferring the debt (deficit) is not practicable in a pure monetary sense.

Scotland can't become 'independent from the United Kingdom'. By definition becoming independent means you cease to be a colony so if Scotland becomes independent it has removed itself from English colonial rule and the United Kingdom is a misnomer. On the other hand, if the United Kingdom (as we are led to believe) is a voluntary political union formed between the independent and sovereign states of Scotland and England in 1707, then Scotland is currently independent and has merely lent some of its sovereignty to the union. If the union is indeed voluntary Scotland can remove itself from the union whenever it wishes. This would therefore result in the dissolution of the United Kingdom. So Scotland can do one of two things; it can either dissolve the union, or it can cease to be an English colony but it cannot become independent from the United Kingdom - this is a contradiction in terms.
