Cecilia is diagnosed with schizophrenia and was first featured on SBSK three years ago. While filming she was symptomatic. Since then, she has worked hard to learn new coping skills and improve her mental health. Today, Cecilia is the founder of an organization named ‪@studentswithpsychosis‬ that is helping people around the world who experience psychosis.
This was filmed in 2020 as part of our "How Are You?" series.

I am schizophrenic (schizoaffective, to be precise) and I’ve always loved that interview of Cecilia because she reminded me so much of myself. I’m still in Cecilia “1.0” mode (I hope it’s okay to say that, I don’t mean that in a negative way at all) because I too struggle with addiction and while I have made strides regarding self care, I had a massive relapse the other day that I am recovering from and this video is sort of a “wake up call” for me to really enforce self care in a positive way rather than destroy myself and pick up the pieces afterwards. I’m very proud of Cecilia for working through everything, I’m very proud of every schizophrenic person who is trying (and even those who aren’t). I’m always an advocate of mentally ill people and I am happy with their triumphs as well as supportive during their worst moments. I know she’ll likely never see this, but Cecilia has such an impact on her fellow schizo- population. She is very important and means so much to the world, during these triumphs or her struggles. Thanks for all the work you do, SBSK. You may have an idea about the good you do, but the impact is so powerful that it’s made the world a better place and I’m not sure anyone can fully fathom that. I believe that.

Oh my gosh yes - there's only so much that the textbooks can tell us. When it comes to psychiatric nursing, or really... any interpersonal skills, I learn best from talking with my patients or ambassadors of groups that can explain what life is like through their lens. I feel that a lot of "therapeutic communication" is kinda sterile - like, I'm not going to sit there with a stressed patient and say "you seem stressed." Stating the obvious is going to get me the stink-eye or the "are you for reaaaaal?!" face. It's really awesome to listen to the experiences and wishes of others, because as you said, it gives us something to take into our community and gives us the tools to reach people in meaningful ways.

I grew up with a mother that had paranoid schizophrenia, the medications she took ranged from things that fully incapacitated her, to things that made her feel so okay that she opted to forgo medication (wrongly) Then there were the scenarios where she got medication that worked beautifully, but eventually was discontinued. Life was an adventure. I don’t think there’s a mental illness I could be more aware of than this. I’ve seen it and lived it. Although the illness itself definitely has different experiences and outcomes.

She's awesome! Regarding eye contact comments in the old video, it always shocks me how ignorant so many people are that they still abide by the antiquated pseudo-social science of "no eye contact means they're lying!" So many people love to larp as if they're little CSI agents. They don't understand anxiety to such an extremely out of touch degree that's actually worrying. Good for Cecilia!

Hey Chris! I've been binge watching SBSK, and this video is honestly exactly what I needed. Life has been a bit rough these past few months and it's taken a toll on my depression. I'm diagnosed with chronic depression with anxious symptoms, and although I had made great progress these past two years, recent events have pushed me back a bit. I've been struggling to regain the strength to reach out to my doctor and retake control of my medication, routine and just everyday life, and this video is exactly what I needed to remember that I can still make progress. If my past self could do it, my present self can do it again. Thank you so, so, so much for everything you've done for me and so many others, and a huge thanks to every single person who's shared their story.

Oh my gosh, I am SO happy that I saw this video! Ever since I watched Cecilia's TED talk a few years back, I was touched by her words and her earnest plea for society to stop judging her, and others, by their diagnosis. I have a few mental health disorders and have experienced some stigmatization (surprisingly, the worst was from those in the mental health field), but I cannot say that I have experienced the same thing that Cecilia, or others with psychosis have. When I saw the SBSK vid, my heart broke for Cecilia - I could see that she was in a rough place and was doing well holding it together as best as she could - but then when I saw Cecilia's update tonight, my heart burst with joy. Seeing you smile and just how much more relaxed you seemed compared to your last video made me really happy. Chris is right - recovery isn't linear; it's normal for us to have ups and downs. If today is bad, that doesn't mean that tomorrow, next week, next month etc. is going to be bad too. Everyone has bad days and good days; this doesn't mean that your condition is getting worse. I'm a total dork and I am a fan of the Animal Crossing series of games; there's a character called Katrina, the fortune-teller, and one of her pearls of wisdom is really fitting for today: Remember, bad times are just times that are bad. Whatever happens, it doesn't mean that we/you are bad, that life is bad, etc. Bad times are not a reflection of you as a person - they're just bad times - and you are so amazing and strong for making it through the bad times so you can experience the good times too. From one adult to another, I am SO proud of you; I have some serious happytears goin' on. I'm so glad that you are using your platform and your expertise to help others that have psychosis. I wish you the very best - you're such an amazing person and the world is infinitely richer for having you in it.

I just came from watching the video from 3 years ago, and I just want to say how much I relate to not being able to maintain eye contact. I have dissociative symptoms and this causes me to feel like things around me are not real or do not fit the reality that is in my mind. It is hard to keep eye contact with people who I suddenly think should be someone else because the last time I, or one of my headmates was out front we were in a different conversation with a different person, so it takes time to reconcile who I am really with and decide if they exist in the outside world or if I'm still on the inside. I'm so glad you shared your experience, and highlighted how our progress can be non linear but still progress.

As someone with psychotic symptoms, this helps me a lot, thank you. She articulates very well the experience of living with these symptoms, and it helps me feel that I'm not alone (as well as reassuring me, and also giving me insight into how to manage them). I love Cecilia!

Ceceila's transparency has helped me understand my Bipolar 1 more. The stigma I get in my own family needs to be educated by me so I'm working on ALL of it and isolation. Ceceila is a true inspiration for the mental health community.

I am so happy she seems to be doing a lot better and at the same time I think the old video was extremely beneficial for ignorants like me to understand what schizophrenia looks like and sounds like on a bad day. There is nothing to be ashamed of, in fact I think she was incredibly brave and kind to accept the first interview and that's what I remember the most about it.

I am so happy I found this Channel! You are doing an amazing thing here. You're showing and helping the world to understand the many sicknesses out there. What I have learned from this channel is to always BE KIND because you'd never know what people are dealing with mentally even if they appear to be normal looking because people don't walk around with a stickers on their heads say (Hi I have a mental illness please be kind to me!) Thank You for sharing and to everyone else PLEASE, CHOOSE KINDNESS ALWAYS!!!!

I am so very thankful for SBSK and how they spread awareness! I am also so very proud of Cecilia! She has done so much for mental health awareness in young adults and breaking down the stigma and helping start the conversations so desperately needed for society to recognize that the current status of this topic still needs improvement. Thank you for sharing Cecilia. SBSK you two are two of the best humans on Earth in my opinion.

2020 was extremely difficult and unsettling, to say the least, especially for people with mental illness diagnoses. I myself have diagnosed CPTSD and severe chronic depression and 2020 triggered me so much, my mental health was has never been as bad as it was in 2020. It's getting better and I am glad to see Cecelia is also doing better and is helping others with psychosis. We all need to help each other raise awareness, acceptance and give kindness and love
