Hey Lars I did search and rescue for years. This is the first thing we would do 1 or 2 searches of the house and outbuildings. Also some people who have mental disorders, will just go in a straight line and end up stuck in a bush or a pile of brush. Good luck friend.

God Bless that old lady. Larz I have a man who live next to me and he has no power or running water. I had to call 911 and have him taken to the Hospital, I thing he is now living with family. So sad for people with mental illness.

When I was an officer and chief of our local fire department I kept a list of horder houses and I told my crew do not go beyond 3 ft of any entrance because you will become a casualty in a search and rescue on a burning structure. It's a sad thing to say but it's rather true and most successful search and rescues you find the victim very close to a point of egress.

Her mother died and she stopped taking her medication. She told the guys in the monastery that she took her medication regularly.

What a sad story, Schizophrenia is a terrible condition including voices which woukd explain the religious icons and the witch's marks on the doors and by the windows, to keep the demons at bay. My uncle developed full blown Schizophrenic in his 30s and it was hard for everyone, but especially him. I hope she is at peace now ❤

The religious icons aren’t a symptom of mental illness. We have many such icons in our home and collected more on a recent trip to Greece. Collecting them is a common trait of Orthodox Christians, including prayers for the blessings of the saints on the icons. The marks were of the Orthodox Cross, and some other markings I don’t recognize but have no religious significance. The letter said to the effect that nothing is permanent in this life, death is inevitable and Christ is the saviour. Schizophrenia can manifest itself in many ways, including the belief that they are god-like or a prophet. Has nothing to do with the particular religion. In this case, she seems to have turned to her faith to help her battle the demons in her head. Agree that it is a sad case.

it's a real shame to see this kind of thing. I'm assuming she had no local family to assist her? Someone with her condition should have a caretaker, but asking that of people, especially in an area where everyone always has their own worries, is often a very large burden. Very true. There's whole list of benefits given by use of generational households and family annexes as a societal, cultural and national standard. And there's a long time since we were made convinced that institutions can mitigate/correct what was lost.

A lot of people who are suffering from that condition are homeless and on the street here in New Mexico.

This past summer a woman with some mental disabilities broke out of whatever hospital was supposed to be helping her. She "stole" an electric wheelchair made it a few miles till it died on my street. The police found her the next day. It's hard to understand what others are going through. As we can't walk a mile in their shoes. All we can do is be kind and lent a little help.

The condition is called Diogenes Syndrome. Professionally I encountered it many many times. For what it's worth I have seen places that were even worse than that. A really weird thing about these cases is that the person living in the filth and decay was always really intelligent and articulate. Every single time.

I'm a plumber, and people would be shocked at just how common severe hoarding and, to a lesser amount, Diogenes Syndrome is in the community. Wealthy, poor, and middle-class neighborhoods it's everywhere. There is a large mental health issue in the US, and it just keeps growing as the years go by.

are you sure it is a good idea to spreading out all the privacy of a sick person all over the internet? it seems to be known that the woman was sick - why nobody take some care for her? for example relatives or authorities from the nearest cities?

Sad and disturbing case. Does the buckets of waste indicate no indoor toilet? Was she physically unable to make it to the outhouse? Or was she avoiding going out into the cold in winter? And such smoke covered conditions. Was this poor woman breathing heavy smoke all along? Carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms include confusion, blurred vision, drowsiness. Did she have schizophrenia, or was she just poisoned from smoke? I wonder if a foot search spiraling out from the house wouldn’t find her quite nearby. So sad.

This is an old log cabin, no plumbing. Not uncommon to have a “cash and carry” bucket for when it is really cold. She just didn’t dump them

She probably dumped the honey buckets every few days. But it probably needed dumped when she wondered off. This kind of living used to be common in the country when your poor. There is still a few places around my area in the usa that don't have indoor plumbing electricity and wood heat. Its what someday when they destroy everything people will be back too this way of life. Old school off grid lifestyle.

I suffered a psychotic episode which included a visitation by a "demon". It was a hallucination of course but felt as real as reality. I can easily understand her obsession with religion.

People with issues of the mind can seemingly survive a lot of hardship - although the part that survives, rarely has any social needs and can view the rescuers as hostile.

The crosses on all the doors seem to indicate the poor lady was very afraid of whatever she saw outdoors, so afraid she couldn't even take ber waste buckets out to empty them in the outhouse. I am surprised she finally left the shelter of the house and went to the woods, I was half expecting them to find her in the house.

I think that's what the lady had that I talk to you about with my experience with the extended search and rescue. We weren't given much medical history on her when we did the search. And they didn't give us any information afterwards which I wish they would have it certainly helps First Responders understand why things happen. Kind of Nags at you if you don't know the end story.

They told me she had schizophrenia, when I went looking for the first time. They also said that she might not wanted to be found. I will guess that some mushroom pickers will find her at some point.

When I was about 12 years old the nice old lady who lived across the street died and no one missed her for a couple of weeks. Oh yeah...and it was summer. Very sad.

One thing I have learned in the usa on recovery or rescue missions in a case like this is that lady probably isn't to far from her house but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack in heavily wooded area all I can say is by the looks of it she is probably in a better place. It's so awful for me to see houses where you need to shuffle over and between the garbage to get around, and especially to imagine an old woman doing that, probably tripping all the time. And the waste buckets... You can tell that probably at one time this was an idyllic eastern Euro country house - the wood construction, the icons, all the room for a garden - but then at some point everything went downhill.
