MY GREAT AND GRANDMOTHER LEFT RUSSIA IN 1906 THEY ASKED WHAT THEY WERE AND THEY SAID FARMERS FROM RUSSIA, SO THEY GAVE THEM A MAP AND A WAGON AND TOLD THEM THEY WERE GOING TO KANSAS. THERE THE FARMED AND LIVED. I MISS MY GRANDMOTHERS GREBEL AND FRUIT SOUP MADE OF DRIED FRUIT. THEY BROUGHT WITH THEM A LITTLE TART BERRY SHE CALLED RUSSIAN BERRIES WHICH SHE MADE IN A GLAZE AND BOILED IN MILK. I MISS HER TABLE PRAYERS IN GERMAN AND HER WONDERFUL FOOD.

I didn't grow up past 2 yrs old with my grandparents around. We Moved out of town for work for my dad then, but my grandmother would send us a box of homemade baking every Christmas. It was SO looked forward to. There weren't any 'birds' but a number of other things, most of them SO good to me!

I have Grandparents on my Dad's Kelm side that immigrated from Prussia at turn of the century, sadly I didn't get to know them. One of the boys in a picture, looked like he was wearing a Russian looking cap and suit, but they settled in Minnesota and North Dakota I believe. Because I was doing Ancestry a few years back I was able to come in contact with a couple living relatives of Kelm's. My Dad was then able to meet in person, I was so happy I could do that for him :) in his last years.

Oh ! God bless your hard working women folk , thank you SO much as this brought back some wonderful memories but it also touched my soul and made me weep for all the hardship people have endured throughout history. It should be shown in schools to teach young people how lucky they are and the sacrifices women in particular made just to survive and feed their families.

Fun Fact: Those "Fleischkuechli" are actually not a traditional German dish. It's source is Chebureki which the Russian-Germans probably got from Crimean Tartars back in Russia (Chebureki later became popular all over the Soviet Union). Also interesting is at around 8:00. She calls those fried things "Kräbbel", this term I have only heard before in southern Hesse. Personally I only know them as "Rollkuchen".

Thank you, nice to See. Vielen Dank.
