I have seen some absolutely wonderful urban sketchsers and portrait painters use the aqua drops with stunning results.There's really no reason why this product couldn't be used as any other watercolour. But not everyone can love everything, thanks for your honest review.

Oh I have no doubt these can be used with lovely results. I mentioned urban sketching because Schmincke does in their product description, and traditionally urban sketching takes place outside. Carrying a bunch of bottles doesn't seem very travel friendly to me, that was my main point.

@@iritlandgraf yup, I would assume that aqua drops can be best used in sketching by adding colour to an existing pencil/pen drawing. The dropper looks like a fun way to draw with paint. 😊

@@pikkuoo I agree. I ordered their brush pens that go with these, I think I'm more likely to use them that way.

I think they recommend them for urban sketching is because they also sell empty feltpens with brushtip to fill with this color. It is pigmented, but still useable as ink. I also think its Schminke‘s answer to the liquid watercolor trend, caused by brands like Colorex, Ecoline, Dr. Martins Radiant etc. Another brands more like these are Dr. Martins Hydrus, Marabu Aqua Ink, and in some way watercolor marker like from Windsor & Newton, Faber Castell and others.

I ordered the two sets they offer and enjoyed them so much that I visit my local art store to get the missing colors. I like to use them for details when I paint mandalas and such, they have a nice „body“ and if they dry out in your palette there easy to rewet and use them with no issues. I really like the opaque white, unlike the Ecoline one which is very weak, unfortunately you can’t use the white with the liner.

I got one of the basic sets and I believe I would like them more if I had a wider selection or was able to mix these drops better! Perhaps it is me and not the product? I have not had many learning curve problems with watercolors but this could be my first time, Eh? Thanks for your input and opinion. Have a lovely day!

I'm pretty sure when Schmincke mentioned 'practical for urban sketches' they were talking about the Aqua Drop brush MARKERS that they launched at the same time and that are filled with those watercolors. These bottles are primarily meant to be used to fill those markers. Also, 'liquid watercolors' are made from pigment. Those that are made from dye are inks, no matter what the companies brand them as. The Aqua Drop are literally their watercolors in liquid form, they are not ink. That aside: If you prefer granulating watercolors, Schmincke did launge a bunch of special colors in the Horadam line sometime in June. The 'Super Granulating' colors, which consists of 3 lines (Deep Sea, Glacier and Galaxy) with 5 colors each. I think they are limited edition, but there's barely any information on them. And they are sold out most of the time. I myself am itching to get my hands at the 'Glacier Green' and the 'Galaxy Brown'.

If you like ink then maybe these would work for you, also Schmincke offers pens that can be filled with these. As you said, interesting.

I think organic pigments would disperse better than granulating inorganic ones, thus getting chosen in these aqua drop. LOL, granulating color may settle down to bottom very soon.

Yes I think you are right, for this kind of medium the organics make more sense.

damn, these look very fun! heard someone on youtube say that these are still nice and useable even if you just put a drop of em in your palette and let them dry, do you think that could work? that would make them really versatile since you could make a mini palette out of almost everything

I like granulation and I don’t love using inks so you helped me decide against these. Schmincke is a good company. However when any company manages to sell us water they usually profit mightily.

Haha, it's like whipped stuff, pay for air ;) Joking aside, one can say that about any ink or liquid medium. I think this is a quality product that has its uses, I think the pens they sell to go with it are a good way to go. I wish these moved more and were less staining, that would make them more fitting to my preferences.

Do you find that the liquid watercolors settle a lot, as there is a mixer ball bearing in the bottle?

They settle but mix fast once shaken.
