Agreed! I didn’t even really intend to use that particular excerpt; I just started playing it to test the horn in that dynamic range and tessitura and it was so easy I just kept playing!

I'm not in the market for a large bore horn, but if I were, this is what I'd shoot for. -- Actually, I take that back: you can put a .525 slide on these!

I do like the conn 88h sound. Has a great balance and colour for concert bands. It does also blends well with the Bach strands also.

This instrument definitely has a great ability to blend with a lot of different sounds. We could see this being used in a lot of different settings.

I don't like the sharp bends in the F wrap. I think they had ample opportunity to smooth those out. Bad Conn-Selmer!!! The open sound though is fairly close to my EL 88H (at least as far as I can tell from the listener's side). All that said, my XO brass trombones are better than even my pre UMI EL 88H. Sorry, but it's true.

Thanks for the comments. In talking with Conn-Selmers engineers the tight Minick wrap was intentional to try to recreate a closed wrap-style feel without committing to a full closed wrap (interestingly Shires has done a similar concept with their Rejano artist model). As far as the XO Brass I too find them to be great instruments (and frankly, underrated!)

Unfortunately we won’t be at ITF this year; they opened up the festival to sound-producing vendors too late for us to attend 😞. You are right thought that a new Conn is indeed exciting!

Ooh very interesting! I bought a (still unplayed) new 88HO alongside my more battered Conns last year sadly, and a couple of other new trombones so not sure if I can justify. Really just wanted a larger blowing 88H, so would love to try this.

How is the distance between the bell and the handslide? Didn't you have any trouble with your fingers hitting the bell?

I (Alex) think that depends a lot on what you are looking to play for "All types of music." If you are asking broadly if it works in classical and jazz then it would depend on what the player is looking for for their jazz sound. I certainly wouldn't want to play any kind of lead big band music on that horn. That being said I have a player with the instrument on trial looking that is getting a significantly different sound off of the horn than myself and he is planning to use it for Jazz. If you are looking for a one size fits all horn I certainly think this trombone does fit a wider variety of music than many but I wouldn't say any horn is going to fit every style for every player. I believe the intent of the build was for chamber and large bore concert playing but it certainly does a large amount of styles very well.

Is it any easier to hold than the 88SGXCL? I really like the sound.

The overall weight and grip doesn’t strike me as being that different then the CL Conns; however I do know a number of folks who find the CL2000 valve to be uncomfortable on the neck and this instrument does not have that issue (for me anyway…)

OK... this will be a futile question as you don't answer this type of comparison, but you've done videos of the Alessi Shires and this new 88H (I'm not sure I get that tight turn in the rotor). If someone put a gun to your head (maybe a bad metaphor this summer) which would you choose. Yeah, I know that there are different venues, etc. but you're going to spend the rest of your career playing just one horn (gasp!) would it be one of those? And which one? (I happen to have liked your Alessi sound and facility more than any other video). OK... completely do not expect an answer, but I figured I'd ask.

Ray, thanks for the comment! If money was no object I might lean towards the TBALESSI (it is a pretty amazing instrument); with that said we have already found in the shop that it is not the fit for everyone. The 88HNV strikes me as having a bit more of the universal appeal (like the Yamaha 882O/GO) and the pricepoint makes it a bit more accessible...

Keith, an 88H question. You’ve mentioned that you grew up on an 88H. If a younger student’s first large bore is an 88H is it harder for them to move to a 42 style horn later on? Or is it something they just get used to? For me my first large bore was a Benge 165F so moving on to a 42 B (and eventually a 50 T3) wasn’t too hard. I just don’t have the experience of playing an 88H for any length of time. Thanks!

When I selected my 88H in high school I tried a number of options, including a 42, and the 88H fit my approach best; it’s maybe not a coincidence since my private teacher and his college teacher (later to be mine as well) also were 88H-type players. It took until grad school for me to really grasp how to use the kind of air a 42-type setup needs. In my experience many young players (even late middle school and early high school) just naturally fit better with a more open 42-type setup vs a Conn, which has helped me to understand that it’s less about age and more about the individuals overall approach (which is of course impacted by their teachers, playing environment, influences, etc.)…

A good question! From our understanding the slide options would still be available (as the handslide is the same as the standard 88H) but the SGX or yellow brass bell options are not due to the unique nature of the HNV bell design...
