Here in Germany we actually have a lot of old recipes where apples or fruits and meat are combined. Back in the days the dumplings where often made with lard. Cause it was mostly available. At least for farming folks. I love this dish. A Schnitz in German language refers to any slice of fruit. Abbelschnitz mit Knöbb we would call it. ❤😊

Thank you! Many of these dishes (PA Dutch) are German in nature. Love the heritage!

I am so grateful to you for making this. Have heard about since way back in the ‘70’s when having moved to the southeast central Pa area, but haven’t seemed to have encountered them face to face. Your gift for making things seen approachable will change that

What a neat recipe. Love the old school recipe using dried apples. Hard to find where I live. And yes, dumplings are lovely, fluffy balls. Never had the southern thick noodle ones. Cooking a ham tonight. Might try a version of this using fresh apples.

Now when I say fluffy little dumplings I'm going to have to make those hand motions like you do. My grandmother used to make this for me when I was little. Love it.

Looks comforting ❤. Could you let the apples and ham cook together for an apple ham broth? You got my brain working to think of so many varieties of this meal which you would probably not want to do because this is obviously a comfort food so the tradition is this is how it is but it would be good with green beans, some quartered potatoes I guess kind of like a shuck bean dish. My dad side of the family comes from Harlan Kentucky but a lot of their dishes have roots in Pennsylvania Dutch so I think that’s where I envision the marriage of some of these things. I’m so glad I found your channel.

I had this for the first time last week at Shady Maple, but what they were passing off as schitz un knepp had no meat or onions in it. At least I didn't detect any. It just seemed to be the apples in a thick sauce with dumplings that had the texture of leftover pie crust that was baked in the sauce. Of course, I could be wrong because any dumpling takes on the flavor of whatever they're baked in. And the apples were heavily spiced. Theirs tasted more like a dessert, but it was located with the sides. Then again, my sample could've been too small as I wanted to try everything.

Shady Maple is a dangerous place! What I grew up was a soup as you see and not the sweet version. But who knows?
