At first I watched this vid and thought, cmon toughen up a little, you are just going up the Jersey shore. But then I remembered my first ocean trip doing the Annapolis to Newport race when I was 16, and I remembered the trepidation. That was 43 years and hundreds of thousands of sea miles ago for me (I ended up going to merchant marine school and being a lifelong sailor). If you guys ever have kids, relating to them how you ventured into the unknown, were afraid, conquered your fear and had an experience that expanded your comfort zone is one of the most, if not the most, valuable lesson you can pass on. Congrats on expanding your horizons.

Jen and Elliot, We really enjoyed our cruising with you. Glad we could provide some peace of mind for the NJ Atlantic cruising. Don’t forget that having you as our buddy boat also provided us with that same sense of comfort as well. We enjoyed each day and each encounter we had with you. Friends like you are what makes cruising so great. And should anyone may have missed your Cape May segment, Elliot helped save my “---“ well, boat during that “ Cape May bumper boat anchor dragging fiasco”. He not only helped me, but he literally wrestled another boats anchor free from a heavy cable, and then rushed back to his boat as another boat was dragging down on him! If ever I was to need buddy boat assistance I’d be grateful to see Pivot on the name board. Jen and Elliot are as kind, upbeat, funny, and real in person as they are in their video. We are thankful to have met them, and count them as friends. Bill and Margie MV Crustacean

I found the comment about the fuel line interesting-how you handle low fuel tanks. It's just me, but I'd have preferred full bunker before I went into the Atlantic proper. Y'all may not have had the chance to do that based on previous vids. Full disclosure: Once a sailor. Dreaming of looping. Hats off to you both for the courage and perseverance to just go do it. An extra ration of grog for your boating buddies. Great folks!

Hi guys just started watching your videos. I have a similar boat to yours in Australia, it's a 1984 model, same engine etc. I had the same fuel issue and found that I needed to clean out the fuel tank to ensure the issue didn't repeat. I am currently installing a fu e l polishing system to ensure clean fuel. I also run an additive to minimise the risk of fuel bug growing. Keep up the videos I'm enjoying them from a distance. John

For other that may be watching and have yet to complete this part of the loop, the very conditions you encountered is the best reason to make the ocean jumps in smaller portions, or to go inside where possible. The accuracy of the weather forecasts in a very local scale significantly degrades with time. The most you can really count on is a 4-6 hour window. Beyond that , things can happen - just like you encountered. Atlantic City to Manasquan inside is easy and protected. Manasquan to Great Kills Y/C is only about 4 hours and easily completed in the early morning hours before the almost-impossible-to-predict t-storms. Glad you made it and hope other behind you can learn from your experiences. From Nellie May, Ranger Tug 25 - 2017/18 looper.

I have had similar problems with the same engine, low fuel requires more suction to lift fuel. Change filters (all of them even engine mounted) also consider a new fuel pump, not expensive as it's a Ford part. Keep old one as backup.
@gregsullivan89562 жыл бұрын
Sound advice Scott.
@Prototheria2 жыл бұрын
I've never understood the logic behind keeping a failed or failing part as the backup for the new part. If you have that little faith in the new part, buy two of 'em and throw your garbage out. Do you keep used oil as a back up for the new oil, too?
@greysquare93272 жыл бұрын
@@Prototheria sometimes you find out later what you thought was the problem wasn't, and you have a perfectly working spare.
@Prototheria2 жыл бұрын
@@greysquare9327 I'm sorry... I assumed that when a part is replaced, it's done so based on actual diagnostic procedures to find the problem so it's fixed right the first time. I didn't know we were talking about just firing off the parts cannon until we luck out on hitting the part that's the problem. That's some great advice to get someone who doesn't know any better to waste a ton of time and money chasing unicorns.

I don't think so... for two reasons -> 1.) we don't have the time or tools to learn and do it ourselves and 2.) canvas shops are expensive and almost impossible to book time since they are so busy. It'll be like this for a while 😁 If we didn't have the interior helm it would probably be a bit higher priority 👍

@SchoandJo Жыл бұрын
We were a few miles away from shore, good luck this summer! The most important part is planning your weather window, and at the end of the day knowing that the boat will always be able to take much more than we can as crew 😁 Good luck!

Any trip into the ocean that you make it into the next Port without being towed is a very successful trip sounds like you might need a new down tube pickup tube in your fuel tank and ginger tea calms your stomach and your nerves very well before a trip you're doing great
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!
@roydora2 жыл бұрын
What kind of pick up tube do you have in your fuel tank ?
@SchoandJo2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure.. but I think this issue is because our tanks aren't baffled too well and we end up sucking air when we rock. All fixed by having a bit more fuel in the tank!
@roydora2 жыл бұрын
@@SchoandJo i had a hard plastic pick up tube in a tank , when it got to half full and I hard braked or got on a bad road the fuel would slosh and open a small break at the top of the tube at the fitting .

Don't be sorry for your buddy boat partner. When we buddy boat one of the first things we ask is "what's your cruise speed" . We Accept that speed when we agree to buddy boat. If either party has a problem, then you both have a problem. It's just part of the advantages / disadvantages of buddy boating. By the way we are a 6.5 knot Katie crogan manatee.
