You can see the Berginair DC8-61 on the departure roll in the background as they are pushing the ASA DC8-63 back....

It's too bad we didn't get to hear the -61 start engines. Those JT-3D-3's make an awesome howl during the start than can be heard anywhere on the airport.

I was flying Scanair DC-8 in 1984, smooth ride to Kos, Greece but the noise was incredible high from the engines. Loved it :D

This is an interesting video! You were just about to see airplanes like these in the seventies.

What a treat! My favorite airplane on the two versions I like. Having flown as flight mechanic in both models, the -63 is better, but the -61 engine starting howl is just unforgettable. Thanks for the video!

What performance parameter speed, range, load, fuel load, largest engines. There were many models of each design some of which were MUCH better than the initial model you would have to state that as well. As the 707 was first on sale it sold the best but the DC-8 in the end had the longest range, highest passenger capacity and was a tiny bit faster. Of these early jets the Convair 990 was the fastest but they sold very few

The DC-8's were second with enough distance that Douglas could make improvements over the 707.The worst three flights I was ever on we're a Western Airlines 707 from San Diego to Hawaii that was packed with no leg room even worse than today's plain coach. I had cramps that made me crazy, I wasn't hugely tall just a teenager. The next in line was a Continental from LAX-PHX in a milk run Continental 727-200. It was a 4 hour wait from 10pm to 2am because the fuel tanks had been overfilled, likely based on the cargo and passenger weight, so they had to go thru a lengthy procedure of drawing kerosine out the tanks. Once we boarded the leg room was even worse than the 707, just brutal, Closest call a L-1011 Delta flew DFW into MSO that bounced on touchdown in Orlando then came down nose gear first. It was a bucking bronco. As I was leaving I mentioned to the forward FA that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. The Cap't who was also at the jetway stared at me like he wanted to murder me.

Magnifique DC-8 ! Sur le plan esthétique, je pense qu'il a été un des plus réussis des avions commerçiaux. Hélas, je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de voler dessus...

Why did'nt McDonnell Douglas developed a new two-engine plane for the mid-sized marked between MD-80 series and DC-10 series? Airbus A300 series and later A310 had great succes in this marked in the oil crises period. Boeing later developed the 757 series and 767 series to fill in the gap between 737 series and 747 series and still no reaction from MD !

wow it's kinda surreal seeing 2 DC-8s and a prop, then suddenly cut to the more modern looking 767, kinda like the 767 stepped into a time machine.

The eights had much longer careers than the 707s. Better planning and longer gear extended their life.
@tiadaid6 жыл бұрын
I believe it's more the USAF buying up surplus 707s to support the KC-135s that basically shortened the 707s' commercial career.
