English - Welcome to another Melbourne Tram Drivers View. This time it is the full ride on Yarra Trams Melbourne Route 70 from Wattle Park to Docklands on a Saturday in a B2 Class Tram. Subtitles throughout the presentation will keep you informed as we travel along the route.
Melbourne has plenty of colour in Autumn and Melbourne's leafy Eastern Suburbs is no exception. You will see the colour in the trees as the tram travels towards the City and Docklands.
Join the tram as it starts off from the greenery of Wattle Park. The tram travels along Riversdale Road through Melbourne's Eastern Leafy and affluent suburbs of Surrey Hills, Camberwell and Hawthorn. Once the tram leaves Riversdale Junction, the tram travels through the working class suburb of Richmond and through the sporting precinct featuring the Melbourne Cricket Ground and The Tennis Centre. The tram makes it's way through the CBD via Flinders St ending up at Waterfront City Docklands.

driver at camberwell 1971 to 1978. Looking back to those days the pantograph was one of the biggest changes to the pole and going into Batman avenue instead of flinders on route 70 the other. Maybe its because i am older now but the trams seem to be quicker and stop quicker than the old w class. The main advantage of the new trams that came to camberwell in the 70s was they had heat in the winter. Although i am back in the UK now i can still remember the bitterly cold mornings and going into the depot mid morning on an early and having a cuppa and meat pie to warm up. probably one of the best jobs of my working life although the constant six day weeks took their toll and i wouldnt have wanted to do it for the next 30 odd years. Excellent quality video and good to relive my life when i lived in Melbourne. Thank you

Thanks for posting this as it brought back many memories travelling to and from home adjacent to Wattle Park on Route 70 back in 1967 and early 1968! Yes over 50 years ago and much has changed from what I see in the video. Left Melbourne for Canberra in early 1968 and back to the UK in mid 1970 on completion of my posting there. Regrettably not been back since. The route was operated by the yellow and green trams which had no passenger doors just a barrier on the non-operative side and a canvas blind pulled down when it was raining. Wooden seating. They ran to a terminus adjacent to Flinders Street Station and Prince's Bridge (?) The last bit of track between Wattle Park and the first crossroads (? Road) was single track. By now, my vague recollection was lots of parkland towards the approach to the City Centre, was there an Olympic Park there? Certainly not as built up as now. At first, stepping out into the road to board the tram and cars stopping to allow that was an experience as was keeping to the left to turn right in the city centre so as not to obstruct the trams. A bit surprised that parking is allowed on the road at the outer end thus forcing cars to travel on the tracks causing congestion and delaying the trams. A penalty of modern times I suppose. Thanks again for the video and the memories it brought!

Thanks for your recollections. It's all correct. The W class trams which you refer to ran until the Z class started replacing them.

I also used to.live close to Wattle Park growing up in the 60's. Just 2 streets down from the corner of Warrigal Rd ( the first crossing you were wondering about ) and Riversdale Rd, and remember riding on the last section to the terminus on a single track. The part of the line you are referring to that ended in the City was Batman Ave which ran beside the Yarra river and terminated at Swanston St. It's been converted into parkland now from what they tell.me ( I've also been away from Melbourne for a long time ) and I think the name of it is Birrerung Marr, or something like that.

Jakartaman Thanks for this. Those street names come back to me now! I lived in Patterson Avenue facing the Park. The house was a Swedish prefabricated building long since demolished and replaced by a modern brick house so I’ve been told. Hope to make a trip back to Australia next year to include Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney as well as Perth (have family there). So much will have changed so hope not to have happy memories broken!

Barry ( or John Barry Humphries as he was christened ) actually grew up in number 36 Christowel St.from around 3 years old. His father Eric was a master builder who built several properties in the adjoining golf links estate. Quite a nice part of Melbourne . I grew up in East Camberwell so I know that area very well. H

It's amazing to think what the area looked like when it was extended to Elgar Road. Almost like a trip to the country. Funny to think the current day extensions are few and far between and have to jump through so many hoops despite running through inhabited areas.

You have to jump through hoops to do anything these days. Even to run a tram on a new line takes 12 months of planning and government approval.

Very nice video with good quality. Enjoyed every bit of the ride although the tram was delayed at one of the red lights for approximately four minutes. How come the stoppage was longer than usual? What was cool was when we passed the MCG stadium and tennis stadium. Didn't know that they were close to downtown Melbourne. What about your next video? Any more upcoming tram rides?

Further to Matthew's comment, trams should have been able to proceed after vehicles finished their right turns, which happens in almost all situations but here. There was nothing to impede the trams and they had to wait through another right turn vehicle session before advancing. The controllers of this intersection need to give their heads a shake!

It's a problem right across the network. While tram priority has improved over the years, there's still a long way to go in that area

Nice video Brenden thanks for posting. Picked a good day for it, nice and sunny, shows off Melbourne at its best. Just one opinion, each time I travel trough Camberwell junction I am thinking why O'' why did they ever build this 12 or 14 story blue-green 2 tower thing there, it just does not fit in . (13.40) But its now also happening in Ringwood and Doncaster and lots of other places. Investment money talks I suppose.

I am surprised Melbourne has managed to hang onto such an extensive tram network. Traffic congestion led to the abandonment of all the UKs tram systems post war (except for Blackpool!). Only now are some cities reintroducing them, at vast expense.

Melbourne trams basically survived due to the 1956 Olympics. They won't be going anywhere now. It would be too unpopular politically anyway.
