School Accomodation VS. Housing Allowance || Teaching in Dubai

International schools with highest salaries are usually British Schools and they deliberately hire young teachers and teaching is very stressful as these schools are either “outstanding” or aspiring to be and hence timetables are heavy ie over 24 hours/week (before the new weekend ruling). The young staff are often new and unaware when they start and trapped for the 2 year contract. So check all these things.

No racism??? Your salary literally depends on where you come from. Safety??? Its illegal to be gay and you get jailed for the smallest things. Easy to make friends?? Its impossible to make friends with the locals. Most of the other middle eastern people do not like the values and lifestyle of the Gulf. If you value freedom and human rights, Dubai is definitely not your place. If you value money and consumerism, it is. Depends on your personality and priorities.

Remember the govt school with higher salaries are clever at distributing the money/teacher benefits. So here the housing would be cheaper, even shared in some cases, medical insurance will be bottom rung, if you have children their placement is problematic if you are western and the school is arabic - many considerations. Often first year its their choice of accomodation and then you may select ylur own. In all cases the housing allowance is less than market rentals. There is no flexibility. The salaries are better (since you save on housing) but have no doubts UAE has very high cost of living. Finally the biggest hit teachers overlook is that no contributions are made to your pension or National Insurance.

Hey Emma! You wear pretty much exactly the same clothes you wear at home in the private international schools here, shoulders and knees should be covered though ☺️ In some of the government/public schools, they require you to wear an abaya ☺️

Hey Emma. A lot of the accommodation in Dubai is single accommodation but if you are working out in another emirate and they only provide shared accommodation, you can definitely request to live with friends x

It depends on whether he will have a job there because if he does, you will be given a local visa not an international one, as you will go under his visa, not your own independent one.

Hi Liam! Most schools will give you the option of school accommodation or a housing allowance. If you want a house, you would take the housing allowance 😁

Hi Lee! No this wouldn’t be an option. At least I’ve never heard of anybody doing this. You either take the housing allowance for the year or take the school accommodation. ☺️ Many people stay in cheap hotels ( travel lodge) at first when they come over before they commit to a place if they take the housing allowance. ☺️

Hi Aman! No problem - This comes down to the school. I know a lot of friends living in shared accommodation ( villas) and they have gyms/pools in the surrounding area opposed to in a apartment buildings where the pool and gym may be in the building
