A recent CBS News poll found that just around 6 percent of parents are against mask mandates, but those who are against them are often the loudest voices in the room, Correspondent Meg Oliver attended a contentious school board meeting in Wayne, N.J., to see how they are becoming flashpoints for parents frustrated with COVID guidelines, and with each other.
Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

@@FleurPillager Masks, if worn properly (which can be done with proper education), greatly reduce the spread of COVID. Kids can, do and are getting and spreading COVID. While small, the rate of child hospitalizations and deaths is increasing (see Texas). If you live in an area with low vaccination rates for adults/school workers, and a high case rate... masks should 100% be required for kids. High school especially. The mistake was keeping kids out of school. THAT was the detriment to their well being. Masks are about as annoying and impactful as a school uniform. Sucks, there are some downsides, but it is NOT some blight on their existence.

Can I ask a question? Have you sat in a classroom for 8 hours a day. Trying to read, learn, write and so many other things as a little child. Two: have you looked at the percentage of deaths among children? It’s not many. There is knee 99 percent survival rate. This whole pandemic is a sick distraction. Now immunocompromised and elderly I can see getting it but half of us already had it unawarringly and have antibodies. So….focus on building up in Jesus and prepare for death and judgment because that’s what matters most. Look at the way this world is turning?

Look, masks and vaccines were apart of Bush's plan that he created back in 2005 to treat a pandemic. It's not a new conspiracy to take away freedoms -- this is something that even older republican leaders acknowledged would curve the dangers of a pandemic. In any case, freedom cannot exist without responsibility. It's the government that entrusts us with and protect the freedoms we benefit so much from. Like em or not, without the government, we don't have those freedoms. Without a government, there is anarchy and there is no authority to ensure our freedoms. So do your part to take care of yourself, your community, and your government if you care so much about freedom.

@@DescendingBlade Freedom is right only because we live in a society that enables that. It's easy for those of us in the US to forget this, but for the rest of the world, it's a privilege at best because a lot of countries aren't responsible enough to uphold it. In places like North Korea, people don't even get a chance to be responsible for their own rights. So be my guest to go to one of these less privileged countries and tell them their lives are worthless because they don't have the same "freedoms" we do.

It only shows just how impressionable kids are. The younger they are, the more easily they can be shaped by the people that they hang around most often. Growing up as a kid is a crapshoot. They don't know what quality of parents they'll have, what quality of home life they'll have, who they'll have (if anyone) for siblings or friends, etc. It's depressing to think that kids grow up not fully aware of how the people around them early in their lives influence their development, sometimes to the detriment of their adult years. Today's kids that have been harmed and put at risk by ill-conceived reasoning by their anti-vaccinated, anti-mask elders will take names and remember the people who didn't look out for them.

The mother who said children do not wear them properly and implied that children are so bothered by masks is incredibly off base. In my experience as a teacher, my 6 year old students do great properly wearing their masks and don't complain about them (it's the adults doing all the complaining). Sure, children may not properly wear their masks for their parents (clearly if she assumes children don't wear masks properly), but I promise with structure and high expectations at school, they are fine! Children are so much more resilient than a lot of their parents.

They are learning a valuable lesson about caring for others and working together as a team for a common goal. They are doing what needs to be done to stay in person. They desperately need to be in school and the reason we haven't shut down is because my school has a strict mask requirement that is enforced. They are incredibly behind from having to be virtual for over a year. I will happily teach in a mask for 8 hours everyday to do my part in keeping them in school. Nice to see that second kid have a moment of clarity in his own thoughts and not repeat whatever his parents are forcing him to say. Some of those kids can probably barely read but their parents are more preoccupied with masks. Oh how backwards the human race can be 🙃

My kids daycare, children around 4 years old - had 2 children test positive for COVID. It is possible for children to get it and I don’t want it to be mine. Have you ever been to a child’s funeral? Want to go to one? Me neither. Just like you would cover your mouth when you sneeze, where a mask in public. It takes less time and effort to wear a mask than styling your hair, putting on make up or styling your clothing. Do all you can to prevent illness especially among children
