This scene of college men and "townies" as we called them back in school, and the argument scene ("I am the Head N*gger in Charge!") between Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman) and Dr. Frank Napier (Robert Guillaume) in "Lean on Me" are probably two of the best sequences expressing the realities faced by Black men. Both are expertly performed and written and shows the social complexities we live with that others do not understand. Faced with the need to grow and enrich our own lives, we also are often tasked with carrying other Black men on our shoulders who do not always have the same ambition or feel defeated. Meanwhile, we are also contemplating our own place in a world that has long seen us as nothing more than slave labor in one era and target practice in another. We've always known that becoming Barack Obama is possible and have sought to achieve that. But for each of us who achieves greatness, there are so many others who are imprisoned, impoverished, or disenfranchised, and we feel a responsibility for and to them. That is why these scenes are not only powerful, but necessary.
