I hope Spike Lee knows that there is no better cinematic moment that represents talent, colorism, song, dance, message, movement, style, grace, joy, pain, and so much more on film for the Black community than what he created here. We all took it for enjoyment at first look but the talent and skill in writing, composing, crafting, and executing such a musical/cinematic number as this is just astounding!

Song and dance numbers in movies are often thrown in strictly for entertainment value. The rumble at Re Re's not only excels in entertainment and artistic value but it also delves into the heart of the issues of Black self-consciousness (good hair v. bad hair, light skin v. dark skin) to effectively drive home the film's key narrative theme. To this day my eyes *always* land on Jasmine in the 3:00 - 3:50 dance scene. As a dancer she just killed it! Her movements and lines were just 👩🏾🍳😘🤌🏾💋 You could tell dancing was her element! I know mentor Debbie was proud. G’head Whitley Gilbert’s Sasha Fierce alter ego! 💃🏽👣🎶☺️

How did you equate Saha Fierce into this?

If you look at Tisha Campbell's character...and the way the Gamma Ray's perform their song in those dresses...somebody in Destiny's Child camp saw School Daze...Beyonce's hairdo & make up always gave me Jane vibes!

One of my favorite movies, and this was my favorite scene in it. The most beautiful of Black Women singing and dancing their tails off in a musical about the pain of colorism. I was a kid when I saw it for the 1st time and it helped me to see how we dress up pain. The best part is when they come together at the end of the song and you see them smiling and giggling at each other. I'm glad they couldn't hide the love on the set, no matter the content they had to project.

Loved this movie!!!! Back then I am sad to say I was a proud WANNABE but I am so glad I’ve changed. Lovin every bit of being natural. I am hopeful that our society has changed since this time!!

Don't feel too bad, many black girls went through the wannabe stage because of lack of representation. But we're getting better now at appreciating ourselves!

I never really noticed a color division until I was like 20 in college and having my best friends around my skin tone or lighter and we just didn't talk to the darker girls lol, they were mean but only while in college

Spike Lee was so ahead of his time. I remember going to his store in BK with my brother buying hats, shirts, etc 40 acres and a mule. RIP big brother🙏

I know Spike is not dead. The RIP was to my brother and I going to the 40 acres and a mule store, hence the 2nd sentence. Reading is fundamental..@@DavidKen878

It’s 2023 and we’ve taken these issues to a whole new level. Now we differentiate amongst ourselves by Hair type (2A, 3C, 4A, 4C….you get my drift!), Curl Pattern (kinky, coily, curly), Hair density and, let’s not forget, the obsession with Length Checks of our strands because there is this very real (and despised) deception of healthy, natural, textured hair called: Shrinkage. Now - We spend crazy money on products (finally) formulated for the needs of textured hair and we are beginning to truly appreciate and proudly showcase the natural beauty of our strands (no matter our age) and it’s unique versatility….Thank Goodness!! We still have some issues but we are definitely stronger. ❤️

I remember seeing this in the movies. Still so relevant today. What have we learned? Where have we evolved? Black women are we still divisive or are still fighting about hair and skin tone? Just something to think about. The change starts with YOU!

It will never change until people accept their features and stop making mixed race people their mascots. But still latto, Rihanna, Beyonce, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj and now Ice Spice are the "black" representatives. Racism and colorism won out and will keep winning out.

This hits differently since I’ve been both. With the swipe of a flat iron I can attract different men if I am kinky or straight hair. Ppl handle you differently. I’m well grown and this still stands out
