One thing I've always liked about this movie is that Dewey never hesitates to let the kids be who they want to be or hit them with that pep talk when they need it. When "Fancy Pants" wanted to be the costume designer instead of security, there was no judgment or hesitation; Dewey just said "Of course you can, Fancy Pants." And then when Tamika is doubting herself before the audition, he was able to relate to where she was coming from and give her to motivation to do her thing despite what other people might have to say about it. Great movie with a great message. I never get tired of watching it.

So, the Puff Daddy line drop actually aged perfectly and they wound up on the right side of history. Cause when the kid suggests P Ditty, Jack Black immediately says No and shoots it down without hesitation. At the time, it was just funny because he's such a rock purest, the character would reject anything modern and not traditional and 'real' musicians who played their instruments and could sing therefore revered older acts by default and on principle. But now considering Ditty's decades long reign of terror of morals raps and endless crimes against humanity and arguably crimes against music, craft of singing, rapping, freak-offs, what. this part just landed squarely on the side of default corrective reasoning and all that is right and holy.

True story: In 1995, I moved into quaint, mid-century Studio City apartment building. 15 units, central courtyard, everyone knew each other by first name. A married couple, Kyle & Tracy, lived in an upper unit over looking the pool area. Tracy was a chef/caterer & Kyle was a musician. Kept hearing Kyle & a goofy-looking friend of his playing (live) music & singing. I remember sitting in the pool with a neighbor, looking up at that apartment, and laughing, wondering WTF is that? They were great musicians, but the lyrics were so weird! It was, of course, Tenacious D.
