Spongebob has usually had a bit of gross out, but it was tamer and infrequent in the earlier seasons

And what made it better, was that yes, it did have a bit of gross out, but it was just used for a small gag. Because if you realize, most of the gags/jokes of this episode comes from dialogue and actions rather than physical gross out. It balances out pretty well. That is one reason I don't like Modern SpongeBob that much, is because most of the time now they rely on one gag to drive the episode rather than an actual story.

This is my favorite episode of Spongebob 🤣🤣🤣 so many quotable phrases from this episode. The scenes with the guy going crazy over chocolate and finally catching up to them just to buy their entire chocolate is hilarious.. and the scene with the old ladies made me laugh, especially at the end at the episode when they were all on a double date 😂

Man... This episode has a special place in my heart after the first time I watched it when I was only 5. (Long story comin' up, so, if you're in the mood...) I was eating breakfast while watching this, and that "Chocolate!" guy had me in stitches, along with some of the other gags. Unfortunately, I was also late for school, so my mom had to hurry me up to get ready. It was at the moment when the "Chocolate!" guy appeared in the scene where Spongebob and Patrick were about to give up. As soon as the guy said "Now that I've got you right where I want you...", my mom somehow got her hands on the TV remote and turned it off. (How evil, I know.) After a brief game of keep-away with my mom and the TV remote I had to head to school and throughout the day, I was wondering in the back of my head what happens next. Like, "did that guy KILL Spongebob and Patrick?!" at one point came to thought which had me worried since this was the newest Spongebob Squarepants episode for me at the time (I mean LOOK at him, did you hear that laugh?! [15:27]). Once I got home and started watching the TV again, I was OVERJOYED to see that episode air again! (AND, I made sure to hide the TV remote.) The moment I was waiting for finally came and once I saw what happened, my 5-year-old self could barely stop laughing... Looks like I worried for nothing! And all's well that ends! Thanks for reacting to this episode, and it's nice to go old-school with ya!

I live in the UK but I visited Florida in February 2003 and while I was there, I saw in a store or two, SpongeBob chocolate bars which each contained almonds! SpongeBob was nowhere to be seen on the wrappers, Squidward was there instead, although the wording still said SpongeBob!

SpongeBob is always has those gross moments and surreal shots since many of SpongeBob crew used to work on Ren & stimpy during the 90s, a show known for its gross out humor. But the early seasons don’t have much of those moments.

This episode is an absolute classic! Most season 1 - 3 episodes are. You should check out "Shanghaied" from season 2, it has what is perhaps my most favorite line from all of Spongebob in it (and no it's not the Patrick meme line from that episode, although it does happen around the same time, no spoilers though). @mistery_ I understand about how you feel about the modern spongebob episodes, but they are pretty underrated and quite funny when you give them proper attention and a good chance. Yeah sure, I mean some are weird, and disgusting, but they are still crazy and zany. but look at it this way, Spongebob squarepants(regardless of what you think of it today )has been making people laugh for 25 years now. It's even been renewed for a 15th season.

I hate to break it to you SP, but Spongebob has had gross-out humor since its inception, and a lot of episodes you haven't seen from the first three seasons have gross close-ups and exaggerated faces much like the later seasons, it's whether they're more focused on grossness or comedy that's the main issue people have with the later seasons. The best use the gross stuff very sparsely and balance it out with humor. If you think the later seasons have too many gross-out moments or character exaggeration, you haven't seen a lot of Season 4 or Season 6. Those are the rotten later season episodes fans are usually talking about, and they're borderline unwatchable at times. A lot of the episodes you've seen later in the show were made when Spongebob Squarepants' creator Stephen Hillenburg came back to the show and started writing episodes again, and for the most part they are tame compared to the episodes after he left. Seasons 9-12 have their gross moments, but are nothing compared to the immediate aftermath of those first three seasons.

Most of the SpongeBob team started out working for Ren & Stimpty before SpongeBob. A show known for its surreal scenes and gross-out. I also want to correct you by saying that Stephen Hillenburg never wrote any of episodes of SpongeBob besides its first pilot and The First SpongeBob movie. He only served as Show-runner or an executive producer.
