I mean… many would argue that *both* are required to make good art. I’m currently working on a comic, and a large chunk of my discipline comes from the criticism given by Bobsheaux in his review of the _Cool Cat_ book, such as weird character proportions, facial expressions not matching the intended emotions, and random use of background colours, as well as drawing influence from actually *good* media such as those made by Disney, Pixar and even random shmoes who pitched a show to Disney. But I still try to express the proper disciplines and techniques in a way that’s uniquely me, and drawing influence from my own life as a young autistic man who grew up on a farm in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

4:40 I think the reason is, and why I actually related to this as a kid, is that while spongebob is engaged and wants to learn, he is pretty bad at actually learning (at least in boating school, here he is too good) and even though he really wants to do the work he always seems to mess it up to the point the teachers just get frustrated with him and dont want to deal with him. Which is exactly what I went through in school with several learning disabilities and autism, I wanted to learn but it was hard for me to grasp and understand the info and teachers literally blew me off for it. I was kicked out of a school once for being "unteachable" and that there was "nothing more we can do" for my learning.

I always felt that I would have been annoyed at Squidward for initially seriously saying ‘it’s beautiful’ and then suddenly going on about how it isn’t art. I would definitely be questioning that. I could imagine myself saying goodbye to go find a class with less judgemental teacher.

4:58 I think it needs alot of context with the characters to know why they don't wanna teach him . Spongebob is squidwards neighbor next to Patrick and he never liked him since the day he moved in and gets constantly hurt in multiple episodes (not counting new seasons since its been dimmed down) And Ms. Puff most likely seems him as a liability now since in a previous episode it implied that he was one of her FIRST students that never graduated, breaks alot of stuff while driving. And somehow never learned no matter how hard she tries. So it makes sense with that context

In high school, I had an art teacher like Squidward. She believed that her way of art was correct. Making us do things the way she wanted them done. I use to love drawing and coloring but then hated it after I went through her class. Nowadays, I'm able to bring my creative side back by just doing my own little doodles at home.

I can relate to Spongebob so much when it comes to losing confidence and motivation due to an overly opinionated teacher. Art was always my favourite subject in school. But one time my teacher asked us to paint something related to autumn and I decided to paint someone raking leaves... (funnily enough, that someone happened to be Spongebob, of all characters) I was pretty happy with my watercolor picture, but my teacher wasn't happy. She didn't like it and said it wasn't autumny enough and said I missed the subject. I guess she didn't like that I drew a cartoon character. Then she told me to draw another one or I'd get a bad grade, but my motivation and confidence were already dead. I genuinely put a lot of effort into that first picture, but the second one I only made because I had to. I don't even remember what it was, so it was probably some generic picture of trees and leaves. From then on I always had to tell myself not to have too much fun in art class. 😔

I worked as a student in my college’s sculpture department. We did welding, sculpting, casting, woodwork, ceramics… lil bit of everything. Our iron-pours were a huge deal. Coolest job I ever had. ❤️

Squidward has an ego for sure. Or maybe it’s an inferiority complex. Don’t know why there are new instructors going into the job with this attitude like Squidward here does. Oh yes, Squidward certainly has an ego. From what we see, Mrs Puff has it that she deals with his driving test failures (and crashes) for dozens, if not millions of times. While Squidward has him for a next-door neighbor and gets annoyed by him pretty much all the time.

As an artist, this is such a relatable episode cause I've had instances where I get discouraged if I receive some kind of criticism on my art but I've learned more throughout the years that most of the time, people are just giving suggestions to help the person gain more artistic techniques that could improve their skills and also to prepare them for real world criticism which isn't as forgiving as an art class.

While not in art, I can relate to this episode with one of my programming teachers. I would often do assignments a different way than her very strict format that we were forced to follow, even if what I come up with is more optimal. She would always take points away for really small and arbitrary reasons and say something along the lines of “that’s not how you’re supposed to do it”. As someone who has ADHD and Autism, thinking outside the box is one of my strong suits, I get mad when I’m being punished for being creative and thinking outside the box. Especially since my brain doesn’t work the same as most others.

You were a Music Teacher??? What did you teach? (Band/Orchestra/Choir, etc.?) As a Classical Musician myself, I definitely relate to this episode… Learning music strictly by the book at first, it feels so hard to just put technique aside and IMPROVISE (How do you Jazz Musicians do it?! Lol.). I tend to subconsciously see music as a science and a strict formula to adhere to, rather than also embracing it as ART and an innate expression of Humanity. Unlearning a strict, analytical approach is so hard, but absolutely worth it!

I loved being in high school, and I absolutely loved learning, but I hated the work! I don't think I ever handed anything in on time or complete. This was especially true for art class! I loved art class and had a great relationship with the art teacher, though she eventually asked me to leave her class in Grade 12 because I never did anything, which is understandable, I'm sure there was another student that wanted to be there and do the work. Ultimately I was very lucky and had great teachers!

Remember when I said that both SpongeBob and Patrick would get teased if they were actually in school? Well, squidward's ego wouldn't win him any friends either. As for why Puff hates SpongeBob, 1 he is a suck up and even teachers can get annoyed by that, and 2 he constantly puts people in danger when he's behind the wheel of a car. Though, there's a bit of irony in that in this episode, he's too good of an artist and Squidward gets jealous.

The thing about Mrs. Puff's frustration about Spongebob is that, while he is good on a written form, he has also tried getting his license an obscene amount of times, and failed every drivers test, due to excessive anxiety or excitement while behind the wheel, often causing property damage in the process.

Basically, Spongebob is good and eager in class, but also increasingly inept with time, with a tendency for property damage when it comes to what Puff's school is overall for. It's not Spongebob's fault exactly, but I'd understand, to a degree, becoming increasingly anxious and frustrated in her situation.

What is a YMCA. I of course know it from the song, but not the actual meaning / club itself. Squidward (and many other main characters) are built upon what was a theory but has been proven somewhat true. They represent the 7 deadly sins, with Squidward being Sadness and Envy.

I learned the most in art when the Teacher took a step back and let me work. There's nothing like making 50 or more thumbnails and 100 color studies to be told that the first idea was the best. Some people have talent, and some don't. But at the end of the day, the artist's popularity tends to overshadow the greats.

The majority of my professors were caught up in their egos to varying degrees, so there was always some type of bias when assignments were evaluated. Them giving relatively broad instructions didn't help much, either. While the classes each semester were varied enough, things still felt gradually more dreadful to deal with as time went on. It felt like culture shock to go from drawing about stuff I am passionate about (which I still do today), to having to stick to very rigid rules in order to make something meant to be commercialised. Thankfully that didn't kill my artistic motivation, since the artwork I make for a hobby is a completely different realm.

I found your channel a few days ago and so far watched your reactions to the Spiderman school scenes, the Spongebob episodes "Procrastination", "New Student Starfish", "Mrs. Puff You're Fired", and now this episode. Your reactions are amazing and I especially enjoy your commentary since I've learned far more about how high school teachers and principals operate than I ever did before just from listening to you; hearing your thoughts on the accuracy of school scenes in fiction is quite educational. I didn't have a good school life in general and on the whole didn't get along with teachers and administrators until the university level so hearing your commentary gives me a lot of perspective in many ways and I thank you for that. You mentioned that you didnt understand why squidward and mrs.puff dont want to teach spongebob. Squidward is spongebob's neighbor and co worker and squidward cant stand spongebob's goofy personality. Mrs. Puff on the other hand doesnt like spongebob because though he is a good student in the classroom he is a terrible driver and it has resulted in her getting in a lot of accidents and even getting arrested a few times.

To be honest, Squidward isn't a bad artist. He's probably one of the best artists in Bikini Bottom. There are 2 reasons he doesn't get the recognition of a genuine artist- One- He almost always makes artwork of himself, and rarely of anyone or anything else. Two- Squidward's own arrogant and cynical behavior is hard to ignore, and that ruins whatever efforts he makes at getting his works out for sale. After all, artists tend to be judged not just by their works, but also by their personality. So the sad truth is that Squidward's artwork is underappreciated because of his personality and linear, self centered direction... Two things that, sadly, might never change...
