Thanks, Tim that's a very interesting working down to Whitby, I often think of the trains to Whitby starting from Middlesbrough. Looks like the train to Nottingham is delayed, just like her ancestors in the Diesel locomotive era the Thames Clyde express. Just a shame, no one has thought of re-introducing the above service from Glasgow to St Pancras, calling at the original stations. West Coast Railways have tried to keep slam doors, but the regulator has insisted on the doors being central locking so passengers don't get injured trying to leave the coach before it halted at a station. Trains need to be allowed to operate faulty doors manually rather than just cancelling a train at the drop of hat. Which seems to be the norm these days.

Yes, we see it all when we spend a day at Carlisle station!

I loved seeing the kinks in the bay platform rail joints. I thought rail kinks were the province of model railways

4:32 - it does help when the handle is turned the correct way. I have done that trip from Carlisle to Whitby, but in the three sections you mentioned - and not in route order. More a case of 'that's where I was at the time, so I did that bit'. The NCL - MBR was done in a Class 142 (or was it a 144) so, despite the scenery, was the least enjoyable of the three.

Turning door handles - a skill soon to be lost for all time! Carlisle to Whitby - likewise, I've done it all but never in one complete trip. One of these days - - The Pacers - good riddance, as far as I'm concerned.

Another interesting and informative video. It was nice to meet on the platform after the arrival of the Waverley Tom / Tim.

Good to meet you too. Keep watching!

…yet another great vlog Tim… felt a tad sorry for the passengers bound for Nottingham, hopefully they did not have to wait long at Leeds 🤞🤞

They should worry - at this moment I'm stuck at Ravenglass 100 miles from home, my train cancelled. Not sure that I'll get home tonight.

Nice once again Tim and a steamy departure to end the day. Cant beat the old slam door compared to today's doors.👍

Thanks David - I can't argue with that!

Yes the failure of the doors gave you an opportunity to see something different. Glad it was not my train as well, quite a long delay for anyone with a connection in Leeds with those speed restrictions they probably did not gain any time back. The more tech we get the worse things are. Black 5 looking good again and had a good run to York where the diesel box had some problem so after a long delay waiting for a loco to come rom Newark the train was dragged back in the yard instead of heading to Carnforth.

44871 seems like a smaller steam train but I have seen it a few times was it used on the main line in the uk or not
@schoolshorts2 ай бұрын
842 of these Black Fives were built. Designed originally for the LMS they were widely used in British Railways days and could handle everything apart from the absolute crack expresses. A truly versatile locomotive.

I did wonder because the last time you filmed one of them it was quite a big steam train very good video

looking at them rails look in treible condtion
@schoolshorts2 ай бұрын
I think you'll find that the rails are in good condition - test trains run over the entire network at regular intervals to make sure all is safe and well. Perhaps you are referring to the grass and weeds which certainly make the place look untidy. Unfortunately, health and safety regulations prevent spraying in station areas.

Can any body tell me why on steam hauled trains why they put a diesel engine at back is it for extra power or in case of brake down and what engine is doing the work
@schoolshorts2 ай бұрын
Essentially, the diesel is there to provide electrical power for the modern air-conditioned coaches increasingly used on these so-called "heritage" trains. It's not supposed to do any pushing though, obviously, in an emergency it will do so. It wouldn't do to have an elderly steam engine fail and block the main line.

What about our new government. They maybe nationalising the railways again. What do you think. Is that good or bad.
@schoolshorts2 ай бұрын
Politics and religion - two areas that bring out the tribal instinct in people and induce hostility. For that reason I have long banned both topics on this channel. I appreciate that the subject is relevant to the railway and you are absolutely entitled to your own opinions on the topic - as am I - but nationalisation/privatisation is a political question and one which is reserved to the pub or the voting booth - not to this channel. Perhaps some day we might meet over a pint or two and discuss the question but - please - not here - it's a topic which sooner or later will lead to acrimonious correspondence.

Why didn't it make it ?
@schoolshorts2 ай бұрын
I had assumed that it was because of the apparent problem with the doors, but RealTime Trains said that it was cancelled because of a traction problem. Who knows?
