This is the foundation of charm school ... make people feel good about themselves. The other part is as Arthur states is to avoid making them feel bad. If you make someone think you are the smartest person in the world you will get varied responses, depending on the circumstances, but if you make them feel like they are the smartest person in the world they will love it and enjoy your company. However true charm only works well when it comes across as genuine. Cheap flattery will almost always backfire on you. So one must be ready for when the opportunities present themselves. It is an art that you learn by careful observations and thoughtful practice. Always consider others before you speak or act. Knowledge puffs up the pride but kindness refreshes the soul.

@@unknowninfinium4353 I wish I had something for you, but I don’t know of any really great resource off hand. There is a lot of overlap between charm, charisma, psychology, and social and professional etiquette. You have to tailor a style that fits your personality and what you feel comfortable with. ... and then adapt it around the style and personalities of others you wish to be charming to. When you are sincerely comfortable and happy it will shine on others around you and help them feel comfortable and happy too. I think the biggest part is just getting use to tuning into others without loosing yourself in the process. Learning to read body language also proves extremely useful. Most of it comes intuitively along with plain common sense. I recommend searching for resource online. There are no exact recipes or step by step instructions because of the large variance between personalities and situations one may encounter. It is more about principles. Its a matter of finding and refining the techniques that work best for you and that stay true to yourself. However, be careful not become a sappy people pleaser or you will loose their respect and they will just use you.

Yes and it's sad, it's sad that YOU won't succeed unless you create a character that will succeed. A simple conversation can easily turn into a disagreement and ends up with people treating you differently. This is why I isolate myself from people. I'm an honest man but I understand why it is necessary to LIE sometimes. It's all about what you value most and if it's worth Lying for, to protect what it is you value. Despite understanding the necessity of lying I unfortunately wouldn't be able to call myself an honest man if I LIED frequently and unnecessarily. It is for this reason I sacrificed alot of relationships & opportunities simply because I want to maintain the relationship I have with myself and remain true to myself. Maybe I never would've valued those relationship anyway, maybe they wouldn't have valued me, who knows, but what else do I have to believe if they do not even respect my opinion. So it all works out for the best. So instead of trying to maintain a facade in order to feel a sense of inclusion & participation, I'd rather not become someone I can't recognize when I look in the mirror. Because at the end of the day I sleep alone and I'm the one that's going to have to live with myself.

It is wise and an indicator of inner confidence to "play dumb". If people perceive you as being weak or rather much less than what you know you are do not fret. You do not need the justification of others in anything you do. Now if you need to show your strength or intelligence to others you are weak because now you need their approval to feel gratified. Bottom line is let others underestimate you and they will show their true colors as a person and become over confident around you and in doing so become careless. It will now be easier to put them in their place when the time comes and the look on their face will be priceless. I learned this the hard way and now I am old.

Where I'm at with it is, I have to stand up for myself, and in the process reveal myself as a smart person, but do so benevolently, to temper the resentment that arises. M. Williamson once said that "we were born to make manifest the glory of God that's within us, and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." The world is as foolish as it is because many are dimming their lights to make others comfortable around them. In turn, the world slowly starts to embrace foolishness as a standard. I get it, shining stars are abandoned and tend to be lonely. Loneliness is a heavy price to pay for simply being yourself. Regardless, it ought to be paid as it is more worthwhile to become ourselves because, ironically, the deeds and expressions of the enlightened start to rub off even and especially on those that envy them. Envy inadvertently breeds motivation.

Keep in mind, this guy was from the early 1800’s. The US still had slavery and in a hundred years, this guy’s country was going full Nazi. Being intelligent is a lot more acceptable nowadays. While it is true that being too smart and talented can attract haters, there are many avenues nowadays to thrive despite the jealousy of others. Also, playing dumb still means less success while being inauthentic and being surrounded by people who are actually dumb. What kind of life is that? You can be openly smart just be humble or strong or both, and be kind, and develop your social intelligence so you don’t piss people off and they might actually want you to lead them to success. Also don’t show off or brag and just let your work speak for itself. Also develop a thick skin and learn to take people’s jealousy as indirect compliments. If you sucked, they wouldn’t be jealous.

You must be able to separate, staying true to your gift of intelligence, from wanting to be liked and submissive to the masses of less gifted people. It should be however, easy to not intentionally make people feel bad, for being less intelligent. This is where emotional intelligence comes in. I've seen in my job that smarter developers are often told they aren't fit for management or higher roles because of very ill defined, contrived reasons that mostly stem from jealousy. I’ve found my entire life that playing dumb is useful. :-). I get to choose work instead of having it piled on, I get to shock people by being “much smarter than I seem” and I get to learn more about everything by blending in and watching rather than by trying to impress by my knowledge. The one thing I noticed in the video is that someone always seemed to be humiliated by their lack of knowledge. Someone who is THAT intelligent would know there are no winners or losers in the knowledge/wisdom game. Socrates himself lost playing that one. If you have to humiliate someone to show how smart you are, you really aren’t that smart. Yes, I know it’s the humiliatee who interprets it so, but let’s just say diplomacy is as important as knowledge. Just my 2p from the back of the room. :-D

From my experience, smart people are actually magnetic. People are drawn to smart people like bees to honey, because they know they'll get some wit out of the interaction. Maybe this philosopher was one of those guys who liked to flaunt how smart he was and try to prove how intellectually superior he was to everyone else, and that's why no one liked him. If people think you're an idiot, they won't take you seriously. If they see that you're smart, they'll be more drawn to you, as long as you're not trying to SHOW how smart you are just to flex on everyone else that can tell you perceive are beneath them. 🙄

That’s so true. From my experience, people who were or played dumb, had a lot of people around them but for the wrong reasons. As you said, people never took them seriously. So what’s the point of playing dumb then? To make people approach you but at the same time, make fun of you? A really intelligent person (who doesn’t act as such to flex, as you said) is usually the most respected and well-liked. “Intelligent” people who are disliked are most of the times super arrogant and snob and that’s not, in my opinion, a really intelligent thing to do

I think there is gradient. Too many standard deviations above the mean and no matter how genuinely humble you may also be, people will still be intimidated by or envious of you. You can get wit from an above average person, but a true genius, even if humble, may draw up subconscious fears of not being able to keep up in conversation and feeling inferior. It's the same with attractiveness. Being above average in looks will net you free friends, but being a true unicorn 11/10, male or female, will make for a paradoxically lonely life. In both instances, you have to deliberately dim your shine just so people feel comfortable looking at you.

Often when young people realise they are smart, they walk into the trap of being impatient and thinking they don't need to put in any effort. This can become a habit of pointing out the problems of others. The smart move to not "hide" from envy is to maybe keep the opinion from others until a solution is refined. That way you can solve problems without having to "roast" people on the way there. Also people appreciate someone who is not always voicing opinions on everything. Another benefit of this is people thinking you'e not that clever because they think you don't HAVE an opinion. In politics f ex any solution gets lost to the void very quickly because the discussion descends into a cockfight, especially nowadays.
@greenwizard5205 Жыл бұрын
Just forget about other people's behaviour, that's what really smart people do. If you have the potential to solve complicated problems just do it, smart people pass time studying and developing new skills that are useful. How the smart ones are expecting to get good jobs and promotions if they play dumb? I understand the point of not showoff the potential for everyone but the most important thing is to be useful, not everyone is a envious person. If the person don't recognize when a opinion is welcome or not maybe this person is not that smart.

@@greenwizard5205 If you have a soultion for a problem there is really no point in engaging in a debate either but most people seem to think it's some sort of haggling and that it must be done. Thier mouths will start before their brains almost automatically. If this is the psychology, then let them have their instincts satisfied. Instead of shutting people down and having to answer "why not" questions, have people ask "why", after offering a solution. It's basically to lead by example. If they want to argue your position they have to come up with something better - but then it's not you doing the questioning and you won't seem as arrogant, in their eyes.
