Love not only the superb finished driveway but the full install and explanation of the process. Probably one of the best videos on KZbin on driveway refinishing. John, you are extremely talented. Just glad you are creating longer videos even though it requires more editing on your part.

One thing I've learned is that you need to find whatever reputable dealer is nearest to you more than just the brand. I've always ran Grasshopper mowers in northern Indiana because the dealer is fantastic. I wanted Exmark, but the dealer had terrible customer service. They all make great machines, but they don't make reliable people.

Do you prefer a dump pile rather than a tailgate spread?
@SchottServices
@SchottServices 2 ай бұрын
Depends on the job. Most often I have it dumped in a pile and spread with my machine. It has to be a perfect driveway with nothing overhead so a truck can raise its bed easily. But typically there are trees and wires in the way.

It can in the summer if it's been super dry for awhile. But here in Indianapolis we tend to get rain thru the summer which keeps the dust down. But if you are in a drier climate it would be dusty!

i'm wondering why you didn't put down a weed-block barrier fabric before pouring the gravel. i would be afraid that grass and weeds would start growing again in this driveway.
@SchottServices
@SchottServices 10 ай бұрын
Interesting question (I get this a lot from customers!) Weed block or in the case of gravel driveways you would would want soil separation cloth. It is beneficial to a brand new driveway where it's placed directly on bare soil then you build up from there. With this job and many gravel(crushed stone) driveway jobs I am only resurfacing what's currently there. I would need to dig up up at least 6" of material to get the cloth down deep enough so if ever running a power rake or box rake that the fabric wouldn't be destroyed. Many customers ask why I don't install a weed block. Few reasons, first it's an added cost to excavate the stone, move it/store it away from driveway during fabric install, the cost of the actual fabric is expensive and installing. It would turn a job like this from a half day job into a full day job, possibly 2 days with extra labor. With all that, you are going to be putting the grass/weed filled stone back on top of the fabric. So ultimately you will still need to treat the the weeds/grass with a non-selective herbicide anyhow once all that extra work is performed. Weed fabric and stone alone do not stop weeds/grass from growing. Preventative maintenance stops weeds such as herbicides and regular power raking. I've seen weeds grow thru asphalt/concrete. If left untamed, nature will take back anything mankind throws at it! Look at any vacant parking lot or abandoned building! So weeds/grass would grow right back on top of the fabric. I do offer it to customers but most do not want to spend the extra money. They just want their driveway back to normal for most affordable cost. Every driveway I explain to the customer the preventative measures required to maintain it. It's very simple most times and can even be managed with natural ingredients if not wanting to use products like glyphosate/Roundup. Even though this is what I recommend to people. Every driveway surface requires some sort of maintenance. Concrete/asphalt needs to be sealed. Gravel/crushed stone needs weed/grass prevention/power raking! I apologize for the long reply but always wait for this question! I believe if done properly from the start a separation cloth can make a big difference. As in this driveway I think originally the crushed stone was laid directly on the bare ground and not very deep. Over time people added more stone but never properly. So the weeds/grass just grew right back thru over time. As with job, these options were discussed/quoted but customer didn't want to spend the extra money. And after explaining what I just explained the customer decided it would be better to just maintain it per my suggestions! Hopefully this helps!
@SchottServices

Sorry, not quite done! With a driveway like this that's loaded with weeds /grass. As soon as it's completed I suggest to put down a pre-emergent then as soon as you start seeing green growing back start spraying it. Like weeds in your lawn, if properly maintained they stop growing but need to be maintained!

Just FYI, that mini skid steer is not adequate for compaction. There isn't enough ground pressure, which is the whole point. I think that mini has about 3.7 psi of ground pressure. Need to get a roller or plate compacter if you want to achieve compaction. All your doing by driving back and forth is just leaving track marks.

I worked for the highway department and we have strobes, flashing signs, neon vests, signage of work being done in the area....though I get your response, the truth of the matter is people don't care what vest your wearing nor blinking lights. We've had numerous situations where our guys have been hit and the vest didn't save them from their injuries. He's in a driveway, not a highway.

57? Indiana have 57's? I know we have 53's and 73's. But with an established driveway like the one in this video, 8's work best because the base already has plenty of fines in it. 8's are best.
