My favorite shovel is a WWII “Entrenching Tool” has a regular shovel head PLUS it also has a “Spike” for a pick axe digging tool! It was great for digging in red soil around Pleiku, Republic of Vietnam (1969-1970)

I used one those small short shovels back in the day when I was in the military army. They worked for their intended purpose back in the day a long, long, long time ago. 😊

I don't feel comfortable doing heavy side blows with any of the folding shovels. I don't think they will last. So to me, the solid shovels fill a different needs than the folders. The folders have the 90 degree blade mode for really nice trenching. So they each have advantages and disadvantages.

I have a WW2 entrenched tool.. I used it as a seat by locking the shovel blade at a 90 degree angle and sitting on it with the handle end against the ground.

As for those serrated teeth, I’ve used all types of shovels for decades and I don’t recall ever needing to fondle the blade.

Digging a fighting position could be a real thing. Or constructing a hide position. Digging a fire pit. Or most likely use digging a cat hole to drop a deuce. Yes if you have to make like a bear in the woods you should dig a hole. And cover it up.

I was forced to do some gardening and all I had was a heavy duty military folding shovel.... My advice is .... Unless you are already very fit, expect any amount of serious digging beyond a fire hole, or a latrine, to be very very hard physical work. I would also say dont use them to chop any kind of wood unless they are heavy duty. The metal parts work lose, and the part where the handle meets the shovel is a massive wear point. These things are frankly great in principle, and Schrade kit is budget friendly and not too tatty, but just remember that digging holes in the dirt is hard work with a full sized shovel. The smaller the shovel, the harder the work. Thanks for the video brother.

It's hard to cover fire safety very well without a shovel and a bucket of water. I may not use the shovel very much, but it is necessary to meet responsibilities. I do find them very useful for managing fire coals and charcoal (dutch oven) work.

The problem with the CS shovel is they don't sell replacement handles so once it breaks (and it will) you have a useless shovel head unless you can turn a new one

They use to sell just the handle, got a couple of them in the shed as spares for mine.

@@craigshugg2332 They may still sell the plastic ones for the tomahawks so IDK why they don't sell plastic ones or at least wood ones for the shovels. Very frustrating having to buy a whole new shovel unless you can somehow make a new handle

Found one, bought one, now I have a Death Shovel! And I like it. With as dry as it has been, where I live. I will start carrying it this spring summer, when I go on bike rides into the country. I am so worried about grass fires. Any ways, its a good shovel. I think I just need to finish the handle a bit.

Yes, sand or scrape off all that varnish, sand it and oil it (linseed, danish or teak). It will give you a better grip, avoid blisters and you can do a quick finishing touch up any time.

How many shovels does one need? Two more than you think you do. Bits bend and handles break. As for this little shovel....(Gas mask breathing sounds) Its fit for the Death Korps.
