Say Heah Brian, Yeah that's a great idea, I have a E-Tool from 1942, But it's heavy. So I was at a discount grocery/pharmacy that sell closeout products, I bought my Haversacks I put together that are working out fantastic even the camo makes them fit the role. I also found some grills that work great for over a campfire, All I did was make some stakes with stainless rods, Works great and it was cheap, But great quality, But I also got some gardening supply one winter, Yeah a Black and Decker Garden Shovel, It's not telescopic, But the compact size and lite to attach to my backpack or to carry in hand which also is a mean self defense, But it's used alot in Cao, More than one would think, I also bought some hand trolls ?, that hand garden shovel. But that Black and Decker is good quality and going string this season too, I've had it a while now and for as lite as it is it held up great and you can see there's more mile's left in it. That's a tool that few guys think to bring, But when I bring it all want to use it for personal things, Thanx for sharing. By the way, How's that LMF coming along.

Great review! That shovel would come in handy for me. It would fit in my wheelchair bag and when I get stuck in my yard my caregiver could use that without causing any damage to my wheelchair. I would love that and I am sure he would as well to make his job easier. I can also think of a good amount of "chores" I want done in my yard this next summer that a regular spade shovel would do it, but it'd be more difficult than this Schrade shovel. I can't use my arms or legs so I am just thinking for others helping me out it would be awesome. Definitely would be great to win and add it to my Schrade display/collection unless I was in my wheelchair, then it would not be on the display obviously. A great product. I will share this, thanks for the review and I give away and the partnering with Schrade for this. Good luck on the future with reviews and just having fun outside

@davidgonyeau18259 жыл бұрын
Bryan, good video, you're the only one i heard grumping about rambling, so there. So tell me, would you use this shovel for a crawl space dig out? You know the kind, where you dig your way under the foundation, and across/under the house, so you can make a repair to the piping under the house? As far as the "One Shovel Fire" goes, GOOD ON YA LAD! Shows good improvisation! Might be worth making a field excessive for your Scouts, too. Mr. Murphy doesn't care what you have with you, he just wants to throw a wrench in the works. You might be able to get Schrade to pony up a new one of their shovels for the winner. I was a Scout once myself. As I recall every other guy was tasked with carrying an E-tool, of WWII, or Korean vintage, on our camp outs. There was much snarling and whining and "those darn things weigh a ton". Many of the fathers of our young Scouts, had been or were Infantry in the late unpleasantness in Europe and the Korean Peninsula. So there was a fair bit of grumbling about us dumb kids carried more junk that was of no use at all, for anything! After the fathers and the Scout master got done that night with unloading our packs, and only letting us re-load with essentials,the packs were much lighter. Every Scout was sent home with a gunny sack full of non-essential gear, and a short note of what was expected of him to return with on the day of departure. When all those sacks of canned food, and extra long johns were returned home, there was much gnashing of teeth and waling from mothers who thought that there baby boys were going to starve and freeze in the wilds of the Pacific N.W., (in the middle of summer)! I'm pretty sure that it's in the standard mom contract, that they kick up a fuss over such things. Our standard load was as follows. 1 An external frame back pack. 2 Two one quart canteens, one stainless or aluminum, and one plastic, if you can find them. (Santa showed up the morning of our departure, and gave everyone a brand new 1qt. plastic canteen and canteen cover, canvas of course with the then brandy new Alice clips.) 3 A stainless mess kit and spoon and a stainless canteen cup, unless we already had aluminum. 4 An old G.I. poncho, all necessary repairs made before we were set to depart. 5 A stout sheath knife, and of course our pocket knives. 6 Fishing gear if you had it. Be prepared to share with those that don't have it. 7 A compass if you have it. 8 A sleeping bag or a blanket roll. If blanket roll, rolled inside a G.I. poncho, in addition to your rain gear, and properly secured. 9 A sturdy pair of boots. 10 A skein of cotton clothes line. A skein of 3/8" sizzal rope. 11 7 pairs of socks, and two bandanas. 12 Soap, tooth brush and paste, and a box of waterproofed kitchen matches. We got our grub on the morning of departure. Each meal in one of the bread wrappers we had all been saving for months. Zip lock bags wouldn't be invented for quite a while yet. Each patrol leader was issued a hatchet and a file, for the use of his patrol. Every other scout got an E-tool. By the end of that summer almost everyone was carrying an E-tool whenever we hit the woods. It doesn't take much of a fire started from a abandoned camp fire from some other camper to make a believer out of you. I almost forgot, our shelter consisted of G.I. pup tents, with our ponchos as ground sheets. On top of that we were all supposed to bring our Scout Manual. One of the guys asked why we had to bring the extra weight, and was told that if anyone got separated from the troop, that they should sit down right where they were and dig out their manual and start at the front and start reading. By the time that they got to the end, the troop would have found them, and as an added bonus they would have the first book read for next years batch of book reports. This was met with much heavy groaning. Holly Cow! and you were complaining about rambling on. Would you look at what I just did?! Take care and have fun cave camping.
@SurvivalOnPurpose9 жыл бұрын
David Gonyeau OK, you win the rambling contest ;-0 But it is interesting to hear all the details you remember. I was Scout in the 70s and it was a great experience. And to answer your question, I would hate to use ANY shovel to dig my way under a foundation but this one would probably come in handy. Thanks for the trip to yesterday year, it brought back some great memories. - Bryan

lee lion I don't know if I would call 2 lbs light. And I think I put it through some pretty tough initial testing. However, as a Master Plumber, I've admittedly seen some conditions that would be hard on any shovel. All I can say for sure is it did a good job so far and it looks to be very well constructed as far as I can tell. I think every tool involves some kind of compromise and you admittedly always sacrifice some strength for compactness. Again, time will tell.

Survival On Purpose You are very well spoken (something to admire). I also think your assessment is very valid. As you say, only "time will tell" and at least there doesn't appear to be any "red flag" popping out about it yet. So I think it deserves a fair shake. ;-)

Interesting, but I'll gladly stick with the Cold Steel Shovel which I've been using for the past several years. It also has (pioneered?) the sharpened edge and makes a very adequate hatchet and throwing tomahawk, without the disadvantage of moveable parts that can break or pinch (found that out the hard way with an old military E-tool). Plus, if the wooden handle breaks you can use the spade to cut and shave a sapling into a replacement, as long as you retain the attachment screws.

have to agree I think the telescopic handle will prove to be the weak link. it may take a long time but it will fail. if you have any sway with them suggest they make a one piece handle, if you think as I do. thanks. now that you got a bean hole dug use it,
@SurvivalOnPurpose9 жыл бұрын
Ibpn They could make a one piece handle of titanium but it would be less compact and cost a lot more. I guess what I'm saying is there are always tradeoffs. I just test stuff for what it is and let the chips fall where they may. I have to say, at least so far, I'm very impressed with this shovel. There will be a long term follow up on this one. It works well as a chopper, claims to be "defensive" tool (I never used it in that role so I can't attest to that) and an OK shovel. Where is the SCHSH1 looks like a great shovel that in a pinch can do the other stuff. I will be checking this out. Thanks again for the review.

William Phillips I like the Cold Steel and I will probably get one soon to review, but there are some advantages to the folding shovel design. At least in my opinion as a "professional" shovel user (I never realized how much digging plumbers do when I decided to learn the trade.)

Yea that is why I am going to take a look at the SCHSH1 when it comes out. The Cold Steel does everything else well except being a shovel. It like its tertiary function!
