It's a great knife for the $, No one seems to mention it's a Chris Reeves Project 1 copy, I had two of them, and sold them for big $. Honestly, I think the Schrade just as good for a fraction of the $. The Reeves knives were safe queens, the Schrade gets used. PS, made in Taiwan. 1070 is also and under appreciated carbon steel and with a good HT, tough as chit.

I got one i was watching it for 6 month before i bit the bullet... I like the idea of the one solid bit of steel and the hollow handle while keeping its strenght. Its a great design it like a chris reaves so it must be great and at a good price point.

I bought one of the first generation ones a few years ago, I was impressed with how tough it was but it just didnt feel good in the hand so when a friend first started getting interested in camping and the outdoors I put it in a started blade package along with a gerber folder and a cold steel machete to get her started...she still has it today

Chris Reeve did Schrade a huge favor by allowing them to produce these under license. I always considered these to be more of a fighting knife more than a survival. I actually own a Chris Reeve original and one of his Green Beret models. This gives you a good design for a bunch less money. My current survival knife is the Scar Blades Papa Bear and a Swamp Rat Rodent 6.

serrations are for cutting rope, fiber, cloth, etc. At this they excel. Schrade got these serrations spot on. They are a flattened version of the normal serrations found on CRKT knives. The ones on these schrades are very strong and extremely sharp. They do not flex or bend as so many other serrations do. I love love love the 1070 high carbon steel and was the original reason for me purchasing one of these a few years back. Too heavy to carry all day in the woods however. It is INDESTRUCTIBLE and makes a great camp knife or one for the bug-out vehicle.

I have the SCHF1SM. This makes an excellent blade for a spear. I took a push broom handle, trimmed down one end to fit into the handle of the knife and screw it in tight. I now have another use for this knife besides the uses you shoe in your video.

Reminds me of a Chris Reeve Mark IV knife. Way too expensive for me. Schrade did a great job of making a similar knife at a much better price. I bought one back in 2015 and really liked it. I ended up gifting it to a good friend just getting into the ‘prepping’ mindset.

Apparently these knives have a handle cap made of aluminium. If so it eliminates them from serious use in the filed. I do live in Africa and run a safari company. It is frequently necessary to use a hammer when setting up a camp for crashing hard soil and small stones and for driving tent pins down into the ground. Sometimes, quite often actually it is also necessary to hammer some car parts and other stuff. I thought of buying several of these knives for my crew but if the cap is made from aluminium in all models, then I am afraid it is yet another - although largely improved but still - A TOY only. In any case if you do know where to get these knives with original 1070 steel handle cap (apparently some of these knives had or still have such caps) - please do let e know.

Very interesting to be milled entirely from a single piece of metal. I would prefer that it not have serrations. Ideally, a companion knife or folding serrated blade can be carried for the benefits of cutting with serrations. For a survival knife, I would not want serrations.

It's not a 1 piece integral knife. There is a seam and a pin just behind the guard that's only visible if you remove the factory finish and then apply some cold bluing. The bluing will darken the pin faster than the surrounding material. It's a very tough knife but it's not a true integral like the Chris Reeve knives it copies.

See, if that was going to be the Blue Mountain Ultimate Survival Knife, I'd want those serrations modified to Gerber style serrations. I'm with you on ditching that upper guard. A high saber or full flat grind would be pretty nice but Schrade usually does a good job with their hollow grind. The smaller version of that blade is on my list. Nice review Jon.

I think the tools in the handles are there for two reasons. First of all, if you were a technician carrying for and maintaining radios or any electronics of any kind or other small devices, this would be very handy. Secondly, even if the customer/owner uses the bit drivers but keeps them with other tools, it's added value. Some multi-tools can also use these small drivers. Maybe schrade was trying to be different. Most hollow handle knives are filled with very cheap, low quality, bits and pieces and then over valued. It's hard to create a "survival tool kit" unless you can create a universal kit and of course its not going to fit in a knife handle. Even to fix computers one needs tweezers and long shank screwdrivers. To fix vehicles you'd need a backpack sized kit. I have noticed very few people include tools in their bug out bags, which I attribute the weight penality it would impose. While it seems odd or illogical to pack just bit drivers, you get something useful and subsequently have the now empty handle space for other survival items.

I have that knife! I keep it in my car kit as its a bit heavy for hiking or general carrying around. Mine still has the bit kit in it but I really should replace it with something more useful. Living in Socal I don't carry any fishing stuff at all in any of my kits as we have no water to fish in!

This appears to be an exact copy of a knife that Chris Reeve was making when he was still living in South Africa. His came without all of the silly stuff in the handle, and an excellent leather sheath. I bought one of these back in the 1980s from Chris and it is marked as Made In South Africa. I assume Schrade got this design from Chris. I believe he also made a shorter version called the Aviator (?). Keep up the good work.

I've always liked that knife... but haven't twisted off for one yet. Looks mighty tough... PM101 says it's got the same steel and Jess-X and that's tougher than a boot. And ya know, the serrations , especially on a long blade, there's a lot of knife makers or brands... that just can't seem to get the grind good in that area anyways. It's the toughest part of the blade for me to sharpen. And I absolutely suck at sharpening. LOL Lately on my every day carry pocket folder... I cary a Kobalt folding razor knife from Lowes. The throw away blades are nice... and if you have a little stone, they actually resharpen very very easy,,, just a few strokes and whew... sharp as ever again. Good Video

Those serrations are not for wood, they are for rope, cord and string cutting, straps also. Just sayin' ! The purpose of the prominent handguard projections are chord tie downs when you need to use knife as a spear. They double as a hand guard for knife fighting blocking an opponents blade from sliding all the way down the knife and giving you a much more serious cut or severance !

Say Heah John, I always liked that style. But I never got around getting one. But I do have a couple of good, we'll what I consider good for a Hollow Handle survival knives. The top dog is my Randall Made Attack #18, then a real good knife for hog hunters my Tomahawk Brand Survival Knife, It was one of the longest blade at the time. Mine was U. S. A. made in the 440c., then my Baker Aparro, I could baton with this one, The Martin Apartments start around $500.00Bokor bought the design and use the 440c., Then my Buckmaster #184 the predecessor for the M-9 Bayonet. I also have a Russian Special Forces Survival Knife a 6" recurve made out of the 65G their version of truck leaf spring steel it's made at the Iszhmas Plant where they make the AK's. I just wish Schrade would use a better steel. Like maybe a CM 154, or similar. But the idea of a solid piece is a great design, Edge retention is very important to me.

I got one also. It truly is my favorite survival knife. I carry mine when I'm out in the woods right beside my 550 para cord leatherman wave and my old trusty ruger sp101 357 mag. ✝ 🙏 👪 🇺🇸 🔫 🔪 ☺👍✌

since this is a tactical knive do not remove the top hand guard that's for tactical use, the way they use it is to take the knive upside down and use your index finger to hook on the guard so they can slash a person neck from the back.

What happen to this option? You cant find the kit or the knife with has the inner compass anywhere. The original is all over the place with no compass and bit set. Was this just a beta Schrade sent youtubers?

I think it's hilarious how people complain about the screwdriver kit in the handle as if you're going to be out in the woods bare ass naked with just that knife! Geesh!

90 hits to get through less than 3 inches... This is why 7" is too short: 9" would have done it in 30, 10.5" in 15... For 3.5 more inches, the work is cut by 75%, for 30% more weigh or less... All this multiplied by two for comfort per hit, and yes, about 90% of what a hatchet will do, with way cleaner de-limbing than a hatchet... And path clearing as a bonus...

I dont really like shrade personaly cause they stole some designs and i often saw shrade knifes fail. Id rather get a german made eickhorn km 3000 knife that knife is army proven. and has a similar blade. Still a good review
