Thank you :) www.patreon.com/cmrr // en.tipeee.com/cmrr Among Schubert's works, Furtwängler prefers the two most deeply Schubertian symphonies: the "Unfinished" of 1822 and the great Symphony in C major. There is a secret link between the two works; the "Unfinished", a deliberately conceived two-movement fragment, is the negative projection of the huge C major opus. Since the first performance of the B-minor Symphony in Vienna in 1865, the livid major-minor opposition, the suffocating trombone passages and the veiled theme have been thought to hint at death. Furtwängler made this metaphysical aspect transparent in his wide-ranging, powerful and meaningful interpretations. The desolation of the Schubertian world still resounds in the distant echo of the ländler, the melody of the second theme of the first movement. The present recording was made by the radio station Sender Freies Berlin during a concert of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra that Furtwängler conducted on February 10, 1952 in the Titania-Palast, the orchestra's fallback area. Maestro Furtwangler was scapegoated in my opinion, by the allies after WW2. Yes, he did not leave Germany like Erich Kleiber but he was not a Nazi and have read stories about how he helped Jewish musician escape... Yet, Maestro Karajan who did join the Nazi Party escaped mostly unscathed... Maybe Maestro Furtwangler was naive in certain ways but I did not think he deserved to be painted as a Nazi sympathizer.... Without a doubt one of my favorite conductors along with Bruno Walter.

Thanks Gene Kim. Totally agree! Furtwangler was unfairly treated by the allies (mainly the Americans) after the war. The British, who actually had a little more connection and knowledge of events, were apparently some what less ill disposed toward him after the war. Furtwangler was and remains 67 years after his death, an utterly unique artist. And yes absolutely, Bruno Walter was the very soul of lyricism.

Wonderful. No conductor quite like Furtwangler.

So many conductors choose a tempo for the first movement that is too fast. Here Furtwängler nails it and is rewarded with a truly inspiring performance that conveys all the drama and theatre in Schubert's best known symphony.

I can’t stand the impertinent Fürtwangler haters who always appeal to unfounded political accusations, refusing to consider all the evidence, to assasinate this man’s character and genius. Dave Hurwitz chief amongst them.

His criticism, always disguised in kitsch musicological arguments, stands no chance in the face of the pure emotion and unapologetic transcendence that Fürtwangler’s interpretations always evoke.

THE ERROR IN THE NUMBERING OF SCHUBERT'S SYMPHONIES There is growing agreement among conductors and musicologists that idea of the numbering Schubert's symphonies only adds to the confusion, since the chronology and the numbering of the compositions has been misleading a. It owed more to the commercial comfort of the publishing houses and the general ignorance of the critics, and that the real order of the compositions has not always been respected.

Then explain why Schubert actually did begin composing a scherzo for the third movement. If I remember correctly, two pages survive in full score, and there are piano sketches for much of the remainder, needing only some music for the trio.

He abandoned it, however. Considering the size and scope of the following Symphony, the 9th, it is only logical to conclude that FSch considered it finished.
