FWIW, Ihave a relic of those days in my garage... A Speed baseball cap. Speedvision aged into Speed, which grew up to become Fox Sports 1, if you can call it that. I'm guessing Perez gave it another 'go' before the tunnel. You can fool some of the people some of the time.

In relation to your video intro referencing the 1996 race: 1982 was also a race nobody wanted to win. Several drivers lead on the last lap. Pironi's Ferrari ran out of fuel and coasted to a halt in the tunnel, de Cesaris crashed out in his Alfa Romeo, Patrese spun out but got going again and Derek Daly in the Williams could've won but crashed out too. Eventually Patrese found himself in the lead and took what I think was his first win in Formula 1 with Brabham. I can't remember whether or not you did a video on it. If you didn't you should!

Massa's "For fun" expression shows up in brazilian articles about this race as the word "brincadeira" (literally, child's play, but it can also mean something lacking seriousness or doing what Aidan calls "taking the piss"). So Felipe probably thought in portuguese "É brincadeira? Fala sério, é brincadeira?" (Is it a joke? Seriously, is it a joke?) and he translated it as it was showed in the video.

It doesn't baffle me why he resorted to this as it was just typical Schumacher. He had a history of dirty moves and a win at all costs attitude. Senna was similar with his incident with Prost but while I would never defend what he did, he at least did it because he believed he had been wronged not just for the sake of it. Plus he actually admitted it, something Schumacher would never do. Schumacher was quick to blame others for stuff, but never admitted his own wrong doing. Even when he ran Frentzen off track in Canada 98, he still never fully admitted it was his fault. Some of the biggest drivers through history have also been the most likely to pull dirty shit like this, but Schumacher will always remain the master.

The cars are significantly larger than they were 15 years ago. Never an easy place to get past the size makes it a lot less likely. A historic procession maybe not the best use of a race, but binning it off isn't the right solution. Wasn't this where Alonso threatened to lie in the middle of the track if they didn't do something about Schumacher?

When Massa binned it in Q1, apparently Renault decided to fuel up Alonso’s car knowing that 2nd was a worst case scenario anyway (the fuel-burn phase helping here) and that they were expecting Ferrari to blow them away. Alonso may or may not have beaten Michael’s pole time, I’ve never been truly convinced he would have done, but it did end up giving Alonso a double advantage. Also, if you want to know the difference between a Schumacher and a Massa, look at their recovery drives in this race.

The reason why Michael was two tenths down going into the parking incident was because he made a mistake few corners back. My memories of this was staying up all night, keeping an eye on the news till there was an outcome, the outcome about 1am UK time

What i thought about MSC while i started to love F1 (around 1997-98-99) is that he had such a hot head. He just couldnt calm down and think about the long run. Even though the Ferrari-Goodyear combo was substantially weaker than the McLaren-Bridgestone team in 98, he still could have won the WCH by a country mile if he had made less mistakes. Like the Michael in the early 2000s. That Michael would have been world champion after the Luxembourg gp, one round before the end. Just remember the crazy chasing of Mika in the 98 austrian gp. Michael ended up making a mistake and seriously damaging his car. Remember what happened in the Belgian gp, remember what happened in the Japanese gp, and remember what happened in Monaco that year. Michael felt the need to chase the *impossible* every single race, and ended up losing more points than he gained. A more mature, more "experienced" Michael would have seen the limits of his Ferrari, and would have settled with 2nd and 3rd places, and rack up some nice points, knowing there would be plenty of options later to do miracles. Instead whenever he was behind the Mika and David, he lost his cool and threw it all in, and bust it. How he still could go into the last 2 rounds with an 80-80 tie despite all his mistakes is still beyond me. The crazy thing is Michael was 29 (!!!) by then, a 2 time world champion, and still drove like a madman who thought there was no tomorrow. He still wasnt mature enough. Why im telling all this? Well, that late 90s Michael was long gone, mature Michael won 5 titles in a row. But as soon as the heat turned up again, the same old immature, end-of-90s-Michael returned again and done silly things. Everyone in their right mind would have settled with P2, and an okay-ish outcome of likely scoring 8 points. Instead he got rightly screwed, and bust those 8 points too.

The penalty seems overly harsh given Rosberg did a very very similar thing only a few years later but was allowed to keep the position, I seriously think F1 should consider the Indy car rule regarding causing a yellow/red flag in qualifying

Schumi would be off by 5 had he finished 2nd in monaco also in hungary where alonso crashed out schumacher made a clumsy mistake and crawled slowly to the pits losing a podium finish. These 2 races where schumi lost the mental battle resulted in alonso winning in 06

I'm still astonished Rosberg got away with it. Even if they couldn't prove it was intentional and had to assume an honest mistake, he had needlessly left his car in a dangerous position. He could have gone fully down the escape road, leaving the car out of the firing line. But instead he stopped right at the start just off the track (even reversed a bit iirc). That was not only a smoking gun that it was intentional (to most people), but it was also exposing the marshalls to much greater risk - something the FIA was normally quite rightly concerned about. But not that day.

For me my best memory of the Monaco race was in 84. With Senna on the limit in the wet in that (Toleman ?). Oh so close to nabbing The win, just for the race to be cut short. I think after that, we all knew something a little bit special was unfolding.

I agree. The only part i like about the track is, if they make a small mistake, their out. Out, Out! They hit a wall and have to retire. However there are more circuits like this now... Las Vegas for one. Monaco is a slow, hard track to over take has been out grown by the cars development. No run off area that most tracks have had to make changes for safety with the exception of Monaco. Again they will not give it up. Seen as THE race to win in heart of millionaires paradise. The only option i see is removing the chicane at the end of the tunnel to help with overtaking. However this chicane was introduced in the name of safety in the first place I believe.

Ironically he did not actually break any rules, so were the stewards technically correct to penalise him? Most in the sport accepted that it was an attempt to cheat so felt the decision was fair. It provided an opportunity to update the rules to prevent somebody trying it again. Was Rosberg's stoppage in 2014 actually a better effort at stopping the session? What about Perez in 2022, or Leclerc in 2021? Leclerc stopped Verstappen on a very quick lap & would have started on Pole himself had he not damaged his car. Intentional or not, that would have been unfair. So 17 years later, if a driver can set a good lap then create a yellow or red flag & make it look like a mistake, they can still cheat others out of beating their pole.

In all honesty I like Monaco, but I don’t really feel a “Need” to have it on the calendar. Back in 2020 when it didn’t take place, I forgot it existed and didn’t really miss it. But I feel like on some occasions it can produce an amazing race. My personal favorites had to either be the 2014 or 2016 races!

I feel like Monaco is a good litmus test for the chassis and drivers. If a gen of car isn't nimble enough for a street circuit, Monaco will expose it and make fans talk more than some other races. Also it's a part of the Single-Event Triple Crown (Indianapolis, Monaco, Le Mans) so muhtradition

If this was just an isolated incident you could write it off as a mistake or a lapse of judgement. However, this was just one more event in a career littered with controversial incidents and outright cheating so it can only be interpreted as revealing of Schumacher's underlying lack of character. One of the greatest and most talented drivers in the history of the sport but, unfortunately, not much of a man.

Michael did not risk much in terms of injury there, one of the slowest points on the track, and even slower than usual due to his off the corner prior and Hill slowing to (attempt to) maneuver around him. When the Benetton popped up on two wheels, it was because Michael's rear was passing Damon's front and they touched, the Benetton was always moving further away from the Williams, not closer. Dirty move, but not "dangerous" in the grand scheme of things.
