*** Dec 2019 Update...there is a new version now, with model number SL1332....link has been updated below to new product.
While we love "boondocking" (camp with no hook-ups).... we still have a few items we need to keep charged in order play music or our GPS that we use riding our dirt bikes.
We've used a Schumacher "Instant Portable Power" unit for about 6 years. I can't count how many times we've used it over the years. It is a solid "work horse" and has never failed to perform. It's an impressive tool! We've used it for big jobs such as jump starting cars and filling tires to the proper air pressure...to small jobs such as charging phones and laptops.
Last summer, we were camping... and we ended up in a heat wave. It was over 100 degrees for 5 days straight, which is not typical summer camping weather for us! The power unit came to our rescue as we used it to operate a small fan inside our RV. Having air moving around the RV made a huge difference....!
We mainly use the Schumacher "Instant Portable Power" during our camping trips, however, we were so impressed with it....that we now have an additional one that remains in our truck for those rare yet surprising "just in case" moments.
Jim will charge the units about 3 times a year. Yep..... it's amazing how well it maintains a charge. Another great feature ... it comes with a sealed lead acid battery which allows for storage in any position.
In the end.... the Schumacher "Instant Portable Power" unit is hands down one of the best purchases that we have made over the years.

This is the 2nd unit I’ve had every place We’ve lived. The air compressor works like a champ. I’ve used it on several car tires without any issues, I’ve jumped anything from UTV to pickup trucks, then when the power goes out we’ve use it to change our laptops iPads n iPhones. Then like usual I keep it stored in the corner just in case. We’ve also taken it camping. It was my main power source for almost 3 months when I lived in my expedition. All I had in my suv was a 2.5watt solar panel. Thing is it’s only to charge only which means you cannot use it for a tv or DVD players. It’s just a charge station. I would plug the solar panel in the morning, then after my shift I would then plug my portable devices. Then after everything is charged then I’d plug the solar panel back in. For the price it’s well worth it. I’m going to be winter camping all winter where yay again this will be my main power source. Only thing is when you unpack this unit, you have to charge it before using it. Then every 2 months not being used it’ll discharge so just charge it over night every 2 months

Two questions: (i) Does this unit have a battery "memory life" that will eventually get ruined if charging up when the battery is only partially expended, and (ii) is there some kind of "sinusoidal AC waveform" issue that keeps laptops or cameras from being smoothly operated over several hours?

I have one of these and the Sears model, both work very well. Both can be charged via 100 watt solar panel in roughly 3-4 hours of high noon full sun or 8 hours of cloudy all day sun via the cigarette lighter plug. They are great for camping. Charging the phones and laptops, a fan, a few LED lights the they will last all night and still have 60% in the morning. If you have a Keurig or juicer, expect about 5 minutes of battery charge. Put a pot of coffee on the campfire and you will be good to go for the night.

Have a question. I have been looking at this jump box and others with close to the same peak battery amps (ranging between 1000 - 1400) but all boxes have 500 w power inverter. I usually use these to run oscillating fans with the lights go out. What should I be looking for to get the most power to run fans the longest? Peak amps or power inverter watts? My limit is $250. Thanks
@tannerjim

Fans don't require a lot of power when they start up (no need for "peak range). I'd look for one with a large amp hour battery, so you can use your fan for a long time.

The Power Station, Schumacher needs to be charged fully up on purchasing. And needs to be charged after every one month of inactivity. One KZbin video mentioned that when you hook up the unit to wall power outlet using an extension cord, the green LED light will lit and will stay lit. Keep charging it until the green LED light goes off. Recently I bought one from Wal-Mart and followed the charging procedure. Even though the voltage indicator switch, after turning slight clockwise displayed 100%, still I kept charging. After overnight charging (actually more than that) even when the battery displayed 100%, actually the green LED turned off by itself. Once it is fully charged and the LED has turned off, if you try to charge again, the Green LED will lit momentarily (approx 1 sec) and will turn off. I have experienced such charging (indicator light going off once fully charged) in my rechargeable battery charger as well as camera battery charger. I bought one Schumacher SJ1427 approx a month ago and I am following the above charging procedure. I connected my Laptop charging adapter to the 110 V AC outlet of my Schumacher after fully charging the unit and the laptop worked fine. After may be one hour of use, the voltage dropped to 12.8 V from 13.2 V. Then I charged the Power Station. Since it slowly charges, it took may be 8 to 10 hours until the green LED turned off, indicating fully charged. It is may be a week since my last charging, and the battery still displays 13.2 V. Hope this helps.

I have used my Laptop connecting to the 110 V AC port, charged my phones using the USB port, charged my Apple notebook (whose charger requires 110 AC outlet) using the AC outlet of the unit, filled air in my car tires (raised from 30 PSI to 35 PSI). After using the laptop I fully charged the battery following the above mentioned charging method. I also had charged the unit fully after inflating the tires. The voltage stays at 13.2 V when fully charged. Note: I use my yellow (orange cable will also do) extension cord for charging. I have not gotten an opportunity to test the jump start feature. I bought it approx a month ago. It was a refurbished unit.

I have experienced some thing similar to this but not exactly. It was doing the opposite, i.e., was taking out the air from the tire. May be it was due to my ignorance. After buying the unit and fully charging it meaning kept charging till the green LED turned off by itself, I tried to inflate the spare tire of my car, which already had 37 PSI, which needs to go up to 60 PSI (in my spare tire). I heard hissing sound, compressor still running. The hissing sound was coming from my tire being deflated. I had bought my Schumacher 2 days back when I did the above test. I wanted to return the unit. I contacted the seller describing the above situation. However, I did not indicate that I wanted to return it. I told to myself, what if the Seller says did you try to inflate a regular tire. So the next day I tried to inflate my regular tire, which already had 29 PSI, that needed to go to 30 PSI. It worked in all 4 tires; just filled 1 PSI in each tire. I noticed that I was not connecting the air hose correctly. I needed to push the nozzle of the hose firmly and then turn the knurled nut clockwise while keeping the nozzle pressed into the nipple of the tire. Few days after that I inflated two of the tires of my second car; raised from 30 PSI to 35 PSI (this car tire needs 35 PSI). It worked great. In the past I had a different brand Power Station. It also inflated the spare tire as well as the regular tires. However, perhaps it was 5 yrs old and piston sleeve of the air compressor got too hot after inflating the spare tire and tore off inside resulting no pressure even though the compressor was running fine. I decided to use the compressor of my Power Station to inflate my regular tires, and inflate the spare tire at a commercial Air Compressor.

At the 1:17 mark, I talk about the on/off swtich. Is that "on" when you were trying to jump start your car? The "100" is simply a reading of charge level. What type of truck do you have? This should jump start all vechicles, expect for larger diesel trucks. My F-350 has 2 batteries and I doubt this could jump start my truck if batteries were fully dead.

You have to remember, these aren't like the batteries in your phone where not fully charging it is better for them; these are essentially car batteries, it is best for then to be fully charged and stay charged; keeping them at below 100% purposely and not from regular use will not extend their life like your phone or laptop would

It slowly charges. Have patience; one KZbin video mentioned to charge until the green LED light goes off by it self (may be after 24 hrs of charging depending on the nature of its previous use).

Thank you for the information. I still use the sump pump left over from previous owner. I just checked the sump pump and took a few pictures. It says Zoeller Co. Louisville, KY, Made in USA. But the tag for the details is missing. It is a green metal with a white vertical floater. The sump pit is small, about 2ft height. The sump pump occupied 1/3 of the sump pit. I don't know how to upload the pictures so that you can see and take a guess. The Unicheck Valve is Zoeller Model 30-0181. Do you have any idea how many amps it needs? Thanks again.

Are you asking how to use this to charge your car battery? If so, same way you would at home. Plug in a charger and connect charger to car battery. However, I would not do that, I would use this to jump start car, then wait until I was home to charge on unlimited power from home.
