Not sure why Schumann called them Night Pieces, but thoroughly enjoyed Kempff's performance.😃

Hello John, Robert Schumann wrote these pieces during a stay in Vienna in 1838/39. They are inspired by ETA Hoffmann's "Nachtstücke" (night pieces), a literary collection of stories characterized by their grotesque, sinister and eerie themes. Among them are well known tales, such as the Sandman and Heart of Stone. Schumann originally intended to give the pieces individual names: 1. "Trauerzug" (funeral procession), 2. "Nächtliches Gelage" (nocturnal feast), 3. "Curiose Gesellschaft" (mysterious gathering) and 4. "Rundgesang mit Solostimme" (chorus song with solo voice). Also one contributing factor to the circumstances around this composition was the death of his elder brother Eduard.

Hi, Gregory. Thanks for providing some context for these wonderful pieces. Schumann and his beloved ETA Hoffmann - I think his Kreisleriana also owes it's existence to this fascinating figure of German Romanticism. @@gregory9764

@@gregory9764Yes, in fact he wanted to call the work "Corpse Fantasy", but due to objections from Clara, he decided to use the more general title of Nachtstücke.
