I am often not enamored with Claudio Arrau's slower tempi in many of his performances and recordings, but his Schumann Carnaval is simply magical, on a par with the legendary live recording by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.

Grandiose playing. Renewed interest in this Giant of the piano. We have very good, even excellent technicians today but no one comes close to Arrau's level of musicality, refinement and abandon (these are not contradictions), a manner of playing rooted in the 19th C.

EXACTLYYYY! Now pieces feel Flat. Nowadays pianists execute “sharply” or with exactitude but with no expression and pieces fall flat. I have all of Arrau's Schumann recordings. I think he is the best interpreter of the composer. I believe that since Maestro Arrau was so well read and much of Schumann's piano compositions are based upon literary inspirations, he is able to capture the wealth of emotions contained in his works. But, this is true of Arrau's Liszt, Chopin and Beethoven also.

The Maestro himself made the point, that it was his Lisztian training that gave him the kind of power and control to play any style of music with conviction AND sensitivity. Busoni had made the same point before.
