I have to agree with you. I think some of the angles are a little off. And the focus is often in the wrong place and doesn't match with the music. I'm no expert though. But I can see there's something wrong.

For God sake! Who was the camera director here??? Watch just from minute 2:30. While the cello and viola are playing the theme, the camera is stuck on the pianist, who nicely smiling plays eight notes accompanying the other two....

@DanielBoonelight 5 жыл бұрын
the "camera director"..? i think you mean video-editor. question: have you yourself ever edited a 5-camera operation of a piece that's over a half hour, that you possibly weren't completely an expert on? it doesn't take a huge brain to understand that it is nothing short of a very daunting task. who knows what they were even getting paid. i guaruntee the entire job took in the very least 5 hours of work and that is going fast. do you think the budget warrented your own preferences of a TV-network level professional highlighting of every main melodic line and nuance? seriously, get a reality check about freakin youtube dude.

damn that scherzo sounds difficult. why is Trifonov simplifying?
@PGFTopera
@PGFTopera Жыл бұрын
Trifonov is not simplifying anything. He tries to get the quartet members to take off their slippers, And it seems not to be easy.

Not quite enough piano presence as the piece calls for, perhaps. Good ensemble playing, certainly better than from some recordings heard. The quintet is no easy task.

One of the Great pieces, well played. The filming is really horrible, though. A director can support the music by showing those musicians to which the attention of an alert listener would go. This guy does exactly the opposite (or maybe it's just randomized). During the great viola solo in the second movement you don't see the guy even once. Pianist's hands are just irrelevant here. A fixed camera showing the whole ensemble would have been much better.

Sorry, I'm not impressed with the playing/conception in general here. Yes, they are together. But I find it does have the unbridled passion that sometimes is necessary in Schumann. Everything is played very neatly here. But if you compared to live recording by Agerich, the whole group has more fire in their playing. Danill's solo/concerto playing is much more electrifying. Maybe the group wanted to play this differently...

kmpiano1 nah, they’re just nervous and chose careful tempos, it’s a huge pressure, you know, to play in one of the top 10 piano competitions in the world... but I agree, I prefer an electrifying version of this quintet with a lot more passion, my favorite recordings are with Argerich or with Pletnev

It's also, incidentally, a piano competition. It makes sense for the camera to focus on the pianist. In any case, that's hardly a reason to stop listening to such an exquisite performance. Right?

Wow talk about playing that sucks the very life out of the piece - tempo so guarded as if to ensure no one gets a note wrong and the attack and tone color dull. I have hear upper level undergraduate conservatory students play this with far more fire passion and still maintain a brisk temp and good tone and general pitch accuracy.
