Only Schiff would choose this sonata for an encore. I have to wonder if ANYONE has ever played it as such. It's relatively unplayed to begin with and like the other 31 it's a diamond of the highest caliber. Love it!

One of Beethoven's own favourite sonatas

Beautiful, such that I can't add much to the warm musical comments. But I must commend the maestro for his beautiful tie choice with the tastefully choice of suit! Bravo.

This is one of the best performances ever, I think my new favorite one - how beautiful he plays the main theme at 0:26, and listen how he emphasizes the lower voice at 3:02 and 8:05

The audience is so incredibly attentive! You won't find such a non-coughing closed-eyed audience in Europe!

Sometimes Japanese close their eyes in public because they actually sleep. Unpaid overwork is a big issue in Japan and you will find Japanese use every opportunity to get some sleep for example in the train, during meetings at work or a solemn concert. Sleeping in public has a good image in Japan and is seen as prove that the person works hard and thus needs to rest. I don’t say this audience is sleeping here but some people whose eyes are closed could actually sleep or nap.

I just now noticed the Japanese audience. Very respectful. I can't even fidget in my chair at the computer, or leave before it is finished.

This is the only Beethoven sonata to open with a theme that never returns. It is a true introduction.
@rsjmd

Musically, wouldn't those first few bars really represent a brief prelude, or introduction as opposed to a theme?

It's astounding the amount of music Schiff has played, he may not have the greatest technique but his touch and musicality is almost unrivalled in my opinion. A pianists pianist no doubt.

@@chester6343He has phenomenal technique. THAT is one of THE biggest reasons he's able to cover the vast amount of repertoire you mentioned.
@chester6343
@chester6343 8 ай бұрын
@@kennywood6434 his technique is not the reason for his huge repertory, Horowitz had good technique but by his own admission a small repertoire. Schiff has a great mind that is why.

@chester6343 no one builds a rep with their mind. Strong technique is a must for any large rep. It's, literally, what allows you to keep building.
