I went to Blue Moon Bikes in Sycamore, Illinois back in 2016 to check out their Krate Fest. On the 3rd floor of their store is a museum and they have every year and color of Schwinn Krates.

I really wish they'd make these again. Most comfortable, easy to ride bike I ever rode. Wish they'd make it in adult size too! I bet they'd sell too. I remember being excited to get my first 10 speed, but then being so disappointed at how uncomfortable it was to ride, no fun at all. These old krates were so much more comfortable and fun to ride, like an extension of my body.

Super Cool Collection, my fave is the Orange Krate, I also remember my neighbor buddy having the Lemon Peeler in 1972 brand new, I want to buy at least one of these just to have and show off, I like the hard to find white "Cotton Picker" ... Great bikes, thanks for sharing

I had a 1970 Apple Krate in 1973. My mom bought it at a garage sale for $35 for me when I was 8 years old. I loved it and the suspension and gear shifting 5 speed and the drum brake. I rode it all over Lodi, just for fun. I sure wish kids today could experience the same fun as I did on that Apple Krate. Those bikes would be better off with young kids than old men like I am now.

Friend had a brand new 1970 Pea Picker looking for someone not afraid to ride on the trails. That's when we started hanging. I had stretch model Stingray single speed. 20" wheels on 24" frame with high sissy bar riding on the trails. Who needs a BMX bike.

Insanely cool.....how old you reckon a kid would have to be to rock one of these bad boys? my five year old is obsessed as I am with these Krate bikes.

I noticed the flag tire stem covers on the Apple Krate , Were they a standard piece back in the day? I thought I remember seeing orange ones on a Orange Krate when I was a kid back in 1968.

They were an accessory item. You can see each of the Krates in my last posted video has them.

why is there black foam wrapped around front of frame?
@Beastly82Fox7 жыл бұрын
I do this as a means to keep the springer from making contact with the frame and damaging the paint.

My dad had 38 at the same time when I was a kid and unfortunately he had to sell them all to fight for custody of me and still lost. I remember him riding one handed wheelies on them for like 2 blocks. He had every one of them, the banana peeler apple krate and pea picker her had were the last ones he let go of and they're on the wall in a bike shop not far from his house. I've went in there asking the owner if I could get one since they were originally my dads and I never got to ride them and he flat out said NO of coarse back then he bought them from my dad for maybe $600-$1000 and now they're priceless a guy on a trail had a orange fastback and I asked him if hed take $1,200 cash that day and he said hed never sell it

Nice collection! But why are all the pedals off? And the lower bar pads look shitty. Put the pedals on, ride em, and put small bumpers on the forks.
@Beastly82Fox5 жыл бұрын
Pedals are off for storage reasons so I could store them closer together. At one point I had 16 of these and had to cram them together.
@drippinglass5 жыл бұрын
Beastly82Fox That makes sense. I put little 3M cushion tape in my forks where they would hit the frame. Not very noticeable. Beautiful bikes! Thanks for sharing! 8^]

Had a 71 apple Krate, if you tap the front brake intermittently with your fingers, you can watch the springer front end work. it's a simple suspension system, but I never got tired of watching how it works.
