@@Justinfication I think doing Heaven Sent wouldn't be a very good idea. Not that the episode isn't amazing, bc it is. It's just that, given that it's still early days, doing an episode set directly after a companion has just died probably isn't the best idea. Also the impact of the cliffhanger at the end I feel wouldn't quite pack the same punch or mean anything.

Fairy Circles are a thing in Celtic culture. You'll still see fields in rural Ireland with a circle of bushes untouched in the middle of a large ploughed field. They are the domain of the Tuatha de Danaan, basically like elves or otherworldly creatures though that's simplifying it a lot! for an international audience. But one of the legends is that humans who wrong them get imprisoned in their Otherworld, and they can only be released by substituting another soul. So I think the Doctor breaks the circle, so he gets stolen to the otherworld while the soul of Mad Jack/Roger ap Gwilliam which was imprisoned gets released in return. Ruby then gets a chance to right the wrong against the Wee Folk and stop the original breaking of the circle but only by having to a) stop Roger and b) spend her whole life alone. It does all make some kind of sense in the context of Irish and Welsh mythology, but I can see how it would totally confuse anyone else :)

I love how similar Welsh and Irish culture is. Everyone kind of thinks because Ireland and Scotland are the "big 2" celtic nations, languages have a similar name and because of recent history, that they are more closely connected. But Welsh folklore has always been so similar to Irish, and even in the Mabinogion you see that Ireland and Wales are quite connected cultural history wise. I view Scotland and Ireland as our cousins, Ireland being the cool one we were always messing about with in our youth, whereas Scotland being the cousin we used to not get on with but due to shared circumstance have gotten a lot closer with in recent time. I know thats a whole lot of waffle, but id be interested in seeing what you think of my take as an Irishman.

I found this episode much darker than turn left. At least with Donna she had rose and unit helping her. Ruby didn’t have anyone, lived her whole life alone and all she could do was whisper ‘don’t step’ and hope her past self heard/understood. She probably repeated the loop over and over until she broke the cycle. The only plot hole is that no way would Kate have been as dumb to leave her earphones in…but then we wouldn’t get the story I guess.

I stand by my previous recommendation of Midnight, it’s one of the single best standalone episodes of the series in my opinion. If I had to suggest anything else I’d say Rose or the two-parter Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. Does a great job of capturing the fear of the dark we all had as children and also introduces the character of River Song perfectly.

Midnight is a really good idea.
@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg4 ай бұрын
As Rose episodes go, "Rose" is a good introduction. Introducing new companions can be hard. Like, if you were only going to watch one Amy episode to introduce the character, Eleventh Hour is obviously a good one... But does Beast Below give a better idea of the dynamic? That's the problem with doing single episodes in isolation.

This is an interesting experiment because newcomers always have a completely different perception of the show. I once said before that "73 Yards" is perhaps the best episode of this season, it's pretty up there with "Devil's Chord" in overall terms. As much as I love Moffat's work, Boom was not his typical work and I felt the sci-fi side suffered quite a lot (perhaps from editing). I also found the Christmas special and the 60th to be a bit more fun than I expected, despite a handful of legacy duds and how much the reboot season affected them.

That is a really good choice for New Who viewers- Seven and Ace are so easy to watch. If Genesis, and you want to be nice to them, consider the shorter recut version. When I saw it I couldn't tell what they cut out... Hmm. Or, maybe if the introductions were in the Tales of the Tardis versions of classic who? The best of those in my opinion is the Curse of Fenric. I showed it to my partner as their first classic who and they LOVED it. But maybe both these picks are too woke 😮
@MichaelJohnson-kq7qg4 ай бұрын
@@monocle_mage9273 the problem with classic Who is that you really need to commit to multiple episodes. I think Earthshock (for example) is a fantastic introduction to the Fifth Doctor, isn't too badly hurt by the effects of the 80s, and has a comparable emotional weight to modern Who - but really requires at least a four-episode commitment. The same is true for Caves of Androzani. Or Genesis of the Daleks.
