It's kinda funny that even in one of the better episodes of her run, these non-Dr Who fans immediately pick up on the key takeaways of the era - Great Character, Great Actor, Too many companions, lots of just standing around waiting for stuff to happen, poor writing.
@alansmithee4193 ай бұрын
I don't think the problem is the number of companions. I think the problem is that they appear to have gone "let's have three" but never stopped to consider if they'd get full use out of them. A story should be made that utilises the characters it needs, and then you should get companions to fill those roles. They seem to have skipped that first step and just gone "three sounds good let's do that." But if they had planned a story and found they'd need three to tell it, that could've been a lot stronger.

@@Justinfication I do feel like at some point you should try going for like fuller season reaction, just cause they get proper experience. Ncuti's season they kinda already got covered, probably just would need the opening and the finale for the nice mix. Jodie's Flux would also be cool to see later on, with more context to some of the aliens. Especially the Angel episode was so good in that mini-season.

So... I just watched this video... and I can't even blame Fay and Pizza about their opinion in this episode. This is considered one of the highlights performance of the Thirteenth Doctor's episode, and the fact that for them, it is still not good enough, does say something. I think I prefer honest opinions that have been said in this video, and not just those who like "I like 13th Doctor. She's my bae." or just hating her "Doctor Who is only until 2017, and after that it's dead." In the end, people entitled to their own opinions. Obviously not the best episode to introduce new watchers to the jodie era, but its ironic how even just a single episode was enough to give a very accurate impression of the issues that plagued this era, too many companions who arent interesting characters in their own right, poor writing, a really good actress for the Doctor but with not much to work with at all. And all of this insight gained from what many in the fanbase would consider one of the better episodes in the era.

I find it interesting hearing their thoughts at the end and how external influences and connotations (saying the 13th doctor has bad writing, no themes and etc) can impact people who have never even watched the show. I feel like Hauntings deeper meanings aren't all difficult to grasp with the similarities between the Cybermen and Frankenstein (which as they didn't know what Cybermen are and likely didn't know Mary Shelley was I understand why they didn't catch it) as well as the flow of time, how literature influences history and, in a really cool meta way, how the Shelley's influence is so great that we even have them to thank for Doctor Who as a whole... if somehow someone went back in time to kill them, Doctor Who wouldn't exist. Anyway, I find the episode great, but it was really cool hearing differing opinions especially from people outside the fandom
@Justinfication3 ай бұрын
Of course, and thank you so much for watching! I personally love this episode too. With this reaction series with my friends, there's always the limitation that I'm not doing multi-part stories with them right now, and that they don't have the context and greater knowledge of the specific Doctor and the show as a whole. I do understand what they say though, and I often believe as well, that Jodie was held back by having too many companions who weren't utilised as much as they could have been. (Which is odd, because as we all know, three companions can and has worked-Amy, Rory, and River is one example. Plus, Chibnall knows how to make large casts work-Broadchurch.) Can't wait to show my friends more episodes anyway, and we love Jodie Whittaker's era over here! Flux for the win imo

As a 13 fan, this episode was not the one to show. You have no context on the story, it leads no where unless you specifically continue watching the episodes affected by this one, and I personally just think it's a really dull one. Personally, I would've much preferred 'The woman who fell to Earth' Because its one of my personal all time favourite episodes, and it provides context on how this doctor is different, and you get to meet the companions for the first time, providing so much more context for later episodes, like how Yaz is a police officer, or Ryan's dyspraxia, or Graham's history of cancer and how he lost his wife. Power of the doctor is another good one I'd love to see a reaction for, but not this early. If you do it, at least wait until there's context on Yaz, Dan and the doctor, as well as the master and regeneration.

7:00 It's even more funny, because Graham is Ryan's grandfather (through marriage obviously). Mind you Ryan's grandmother - my favourite companion from that era. Sucks we couldn't have her for more episodes. 15:30 The writing is objectively the one thing for Chibnail's era that struggled the most. Characters commonly don't feel reasonable? Especial Doctor flip flops from hardcore hypocrite to peace loving goofball to psycho. They did have few really good episodes tbh. Especially the Flux episode with Angels was in my opinion the scariest Angel episode since Blink, if not even scarier. I probably would have shown them Woman Who Fell, first because it was extremely good opener for Jodie.

Well thats really only for the UK (and Ireland) because you can’t watch classic who ANYWHERE in Australia at all! Britbox used to have it a few years ago, but not anymore. The only place you could watch it was on Internet Archives (it’s a website thats worldwide) so i was regularly watching it on there, until they REMOVED IT FROM IT!!!!! Well, all except for 4 seasons out of 26 😐 Luckily you posted your video about watching Remembrance of the Daleks when you did, because it took me about a week to find time to watch an episode of it, then watch your reaction to that episode, then watch the next episode and so on. Because literally 2 days after i finished watching it, classic who got removed 😭 So i’m just binge watching those 4 seasons before they get deleted and i have NO WAY OF WATCHING CLASSIC WHO IN AUSTRALIA 😤😤 So i’m a little bit annoyed right now as you can see. :( Love the videos by the way!

Did you not explain to them who the people in this house were? That Shelly wrote Frankenstein? And her mother was one of the greatest feminist writers to have ever lived? And Byron was one of the most important poets we’ve ever seen? I think the episode doesn’t do a good enough job explaining who these people in the house are because it expects the audience to know, but anyone under the age of forty most likely wouldn’t. As opposed to Agatha Christie - which the show bends over backwards to explain is a mystery writer.

Easily my favorite 13-era episode, but this is a rough introduction. It’s a period piece base-under-siege that relies on context to understand plot payoffs and features a lot of slow-paced side character work and flavor text that pulls attention away from 13. Without knowing the era and the context better, this is a bit of a non-sequitur of an episode. It’s honestly aggressively unfriendly to beginners. Perhaps for future 13 outings, try Demons of the Punjab or Eve of the Daleks?
