A lot of people think this is about AI and internet addiction, but I think this is a commentary on addiction as a whole. In the part where the protag is waiting in line you’ll notice that other consumers are talking to each other. Meaning most people in this universe probably use it for recreational purposes.

pretty sure someone already pointed this out, but something that really hits hard about this film is that there's still real people around Arthur talking to each other and hanging out, even though they all have the Best Friend chips, meaning that the chips are really only intended for recreational use and are typically only used as such. So the way Arthur acts isn't necessarily the norm; the dude's just really that lonely.

Yeah, it's... depressing. You can easily relate it back to real life. I know (some) people who are quite balanced with their internet and social life. Or to go to a different analogy, I don't believe I personally am addicted to Weed, I use it regularly and recreationally but have no issues when without it. I don't use it to cope at all times, 24/7, I use it for fun and for when i truly need it. Others don't treat things the same and it's rather sad, because those people who can handle their chips- or anything that the chip can stand in as a metaphor for- don't see the problem with it.

As a teen in the modern world, I already feel like such a person could never exist. Human interaction is agreed by many to be the most exhausting thing upon this Earth, yet it’s something no one can bear to be without. People inherently long for unconditional love and validation, but are also already so far up their own asses to care about anyone else. That’s why -if such an invention were to exist- it would be used by literally everyone, even if it was nothing more than a beautiful lie.

It always confuses me when people say “this was so ahead of its time!” to different forms of dystopian media like this. They never “predict” the future- it is always modern day social commentary through the lens of extremism so it’s less subtle to the viewer.

Very. I sort of experience this in my own life and I only see this getting worse for society as time goes on. Things aren’t the same and idk if it’s just me or if everyone is experiencing it, but it doesn’t seem like the same world it once was where you can meet people so easily, connect and hit it off. Maybe it’s because I’m 30 like Arthur, but I also feel it’s a sign of the times. It just drives you towards filling that gap yourself, and that can very easily be with the wrong things that provide a quick fix so as to avoid the pain of confronting the real problem. Instant gratification is the phrase of the era.

The people around him are interacting as normal people do but the main character is spiraling in his artificial company and not wanting to engage in the world around him. I promise you, you can ! There are so many ways to meetnew friends.. I met so many of my internet buddies fthrough gales and we still talk, but I also talk to friends from school. There are so so many ways to meet people, it's very intimidating but you will manage to do it! Oh i have a great idea : if you have time, you could try joining a charity thingthat involves meeting New People :D Whatecer way you choose to make friends, really you will get friends. I believe in you !❤ Have a very nice day

@@malevaistudio2105 thank you but I really stopped caring, i don't care anymore... irl i live in a small city wheres no many young people are around and there's many old immigrants, and in online everyone just ghost me after 2 or 3 months even though i'm so nice with them, I always end up alone hahaha, I tried making friends from everywhere, Russia(cuz I'm learning russian), Europe, usa, etc, and etc but I always end up ghosted again hahaha and I don't blame them I'm sure they have real friends so why would they care about random person like me right? So yeah it's okay i meant to be alone :) But thank you buddy I appreciate it, thx for being nice and I'm sorry I wrote an essay lol

@@ultra1567 no no dont be sorry lmao, it must feel very lonely of course in a small city. I dont know if that will help but really you have so much worth, you probably are a very nice person, i dont even doubt that one second! Ooh and btw I have a cool app if you want, I made good friends on it ! It's very active especially in the english part (im french and our part isnt as much...), it's like if Insta and discord are combined, it's called amino It has communities focused on different topics, and I remember it being a big help for some time when I felt very alone c: I still have friends on it to who I talk often I promise you, I really understand how alone you must feel. If irl isnt helping to make friends, Amino and internet in general really is a great option :) Oh and by the way here's some notes of what cool things there are so you feel great about your Day ! - The sun is shining somewhere in the world if that's not in your area - Many people feel lonely and feel the same as you. You can connect with them ! - You have as much worth as anyone, no matter how successful, how rich, how confident, how angry, sad, happy, jealous you are - WE ARE NOT DOOMED : no matter what happens in the world, you EXIST and that's wonderful :D - please drink water- - ENJOY YOUR PASSION, WATCH YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW! I hope I helped c: Anyway please just have a wonderful day, bad days happen but so many good things exist anyway (just like you, you cutie patootie)

This is actually so sad and a way more serious situation half of the population are facing today. people talking to AI or robots to feel loved and appreciated while others existing is showing us that opening up to Artificial intelligence is getting more common day by day. This is not something cool or something we humans should be proud of, this is actually so disturbing if we look into this the right way.

Much better than being addicted to face book. At least the 'friend' requests are actually friends and not random weird strangers from some dark corner of the internet, selected by a faceless algorithm, based on how much advert money they can generate from you.

Not that I don't like happy endings but I think it would have been a better ending for him not to have had the friend device replaced because although it feels sad and lost for him, it would have been a bittersweet start to a better life and possibly finding a REAL new best friend in the real world. Then again, I suppose it could just be displaying how addictive some things can be and how hard it can be to break the pattern. Great job though, fascinating spin on a common trope!
