I know this is old, by Mango even mentioned how to do it without Mojang doing anything. He just wasn't sure it was worth the trouble. All you need is something to autofill your inventory so that you can cut the movement between shulker interface and crafting station interface. Since he is already set his hot keys to auto fill from the chest, then autocraft and drop if he didn't have to interact with the shulker he could just craft and drop forever with a simply macro. So, if you are in a continual shower of gold nuggets then you craft and drop ingots (he mentioned droppers, presumably dropping one inventory worth at a go by stacking drops into a single pile timed to the macro rate), you just need a collection system beneath to pick it all up (and sort any missed nuggets back into the system). Thus, you could actually afk it with no more difficulty than the farms where they afk with a macro to swing a sword or use a pick continually. It isn't that it can't be done. It is just if it is worth the time it would take to create the system and get it going just for a "quick and dirty" gold farm.

I think that's worse than the autocrafting table mod they use on the peaceful server. A one-block solution reduces the grind, which is good, but it also makes the game less interesting, which is bad. A complex solution like the autocrafting table, which requires dedicated contraptions to craft each item, reduces the grind _and_ makes the game more interesting.

Could the crashing be caused by the way chunks are being loaded while items are being transported? Or perhaps it's from having a certain number of items being loaded all at once. Maybe you can try sending items over in large batches, perhaps even as a trouble shooting method.
