Today we examine an 1875 Fragment, entitled "Science and Wisdom in Battle". Not only does this fragment contain one of my favorite quotations of Nietzsche's, it represents his continual grappling with the meaning of Ancient Greek culture. In particular, we discuss the importance of "relations of tension" in Nietzsche's earlier work: art versus science, culture versus the state, history versus forgetting, and of course, science and wisdom. Both are drives to knowledge, and the tension between them created philosophy in the tragic age of the Hellenes. Science is characterized by logical, objective, specialized knowledge, whereas Wisdom is defined by Nietzsche as a tendency for illogical generalization, leaping to one's ultimate goal, and an artistic desire to reflect the world in one's own mirror.

I want to say thank you for introducing me to Nietzsche. It catapulted me into a world I never knew existed. I found many other thinkers who I align with and help reality make sense.

I don't see science and wisdom as mutually exclusive. There is such a thing as scientific wisdom.

Scientists do Not know the source and origin of Life (living organisms). Also, materialistic neurologists do Not know the source and origin of human Consciousness. Therefore, does Wisdom know what Science cannot supply?

@@steveflorida5849 It isn't the case that science is completely unawares of the origins of life and consciousness. Biological evolution turns out to be a special case of a much broader and encompassing cosmic evolutionary scenario that has the growth of information and complexity at its core. As for consciousness it is intimately related to the information content, and grows with it in an expanding universe. So if given enough time science will ultimately discover the answers.

Yes! Great scientists have good intuition which is a lot of guessing and not based on objective facts initially.

@@anthonyduval3191 Yes the scientific method entails putting forward hypotheses or possible explanations of a phenomenon at first, which are then put to the test of experimentation. Any surviving theory is again put to a timeless empirical test and critical scrutiny. Our intuition is only as good as the endless empirical tests that it passes.

Science discovers How. However, science does Not provide the value of Values. The worth of values...love, truth, beauty and goodness.
