Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths 2021 Paper 2 Question 2

Question 2 from paper 2 of the leaving cert higher level maths 2021 is a coordinate geometry question. In part a we input unknown coordinates in algebraic form into the equation of a line to find the unknown k.
In part b we use the perpendicular distance from a point to a line formula.
In part c we use ratios of side in triangles to find the coordinates of points on the triangle.

Here is a suggestion for you. As an Irish student, I'm truthfully kind of disappointed with the standard of mathematics in our country, especially with the introduction of project maths replacing concepts like vectors, matrices etc with more everyday stuff. Firstly, I believe the use of log tables and (possibly calculators) are degrading students' comprehension of the subject. Studnets must mechanically write out premade formulas, often without being able to fully understand or derive them. It's not uncommon for my classmates to be hopless when solving a question like "oh, where's the formula". Their critical thinking skills which are essential for the subject have been compromised. The styles of questions are also quite straightforward and repetive. Luckily every now and again there's an oddball challenge, but unfortunately not very common. I've studied the Korean, Indian and Chinese systems and their exams are completely different. In leaving cert , if you really studied, you know what to do. Example you may be given a function and asked to evaluate various values, draw a graph, solve an equation or differentiate or integrate, it normally doesn't get more complicated than that. In the other countries,the significant difference is that you simply are perplexed by the question and have to think critically to reach the answer. Here's an example of a middle-of-the-road question from Suneung 2018 (South Korean equivalent of the leaving cert) Q) Let the functions y=e^(x-a) and y=t^2ln(x-1) intersect at only one point such that a=f(t) find f'(1/3). This question has multiple parts and the multiple variables can divert students, posing a true mathematical obstacle. The leaving cert maths course overall is satisfactory, but because of it's limitations, we're behind those countries (also why Ireland do terrible in math olympiad, Lucas Bachmann a medalist describes this in detail on an article online) Thank you for reading this, I'd love to hear your views.
