Lately, the International Space Station has been flying through geomagnetic storms, giving astronauts an close-up view of the aurora borealis just outside their windows.

@FischerAudrey Went to Chena Hot Springs and saw great auroras in 2002. Nice place and great staff. One warning though. At least 10 years ago, you didn't want to stay in the cheapest rooms. They had bad mildew. Once we got there and saw the room, we upgraded to the next level and they were nice.

I had to replay the footage of Earth a few times for it to sink in that this was real footage. Beautiful.

These videos are actually stitched from still frames shot on off-the-shelf DSLR cameras for best resolution, using very wide angle lenses ( eq. of 16mm ) from the ISS cupola. The nightside passes are exposed at an equivalent " film speed" IS0 of 12,600. They are exposed for maybe a full second per frame...so the HD stitch version is sped up by 24X-30X when video is compiled by techies on the ground. You can see a lot of terrestrial versions of this technique at vids over at Vimeo...

Aurora "kisses" ISS while a gorgeous meteor flies below . Wow... what an experience to witness... even through the camera eyes of Don Pettit. just amazing and inspiring. almost helped me forget about all that light pollution visible below too. I am hoping to save my pennies to travel to see the auroras early in 2013. Maybe Chena Hot Springs... maybe Iceland/Netherlands. Hmm... where would you guys go? It's expensive... but oh boy--- what a treasure to behold.

Just Subscribed. Seems scary to see meteors flying past the station I bet, not just because the station is in a vacuum, but also a bit of the electrical wiring is exposed outside. Was this a compilation of many stills, using the Nikon? Been seeing ads on cable with these views.

Se ven fantásticas las tomas de las auroras desde la Estación Espacial Internacional!! Habrá que esperar un añito, nomás para poder verlas del todo bien desde la Tierra... :D

I liked the picture of Petit. May be if you don't talk so fast it would be good. Whats the rush? When they say in the news that Canada has seen spectacular auroras, we should be advised throughout Canada, where it happened. that should be on the news throughout Canada. I found this in the Los Angeles News. I always find breaking news from the United States.

Nice vid! This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of light and time! This theory is based on two postulates 1. Is that the quantum wave particle function Ψ represents the forward passage of time ∆E ∆t ≥ h/2π itself 2. Is that Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle ∆×∆p×≥h/4π that is formed by the w- function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event that we can interact with turning the possible into the actual!
