@Peter-vf3dlАй бұрын
As a total layman: Is this "realistic"? I mean, the doc seems to overestimate (at least) the Russian capabilities to a comical degree. Poseidon torpedos are very likely propaganda, their air recon system is apparently very bad (Ukraine conflict, shooting down passenger jets on a nearly regular basis), their budget for nuclear armaments is ridicilous in comparison to the US. And yes, I am aware, the Russians funnel very likely secret money into that budget, however... All in all, their service men have bad training, old and bad equipment. I would say, the US has much higher standards, however failures, accidents and (human) errors may always happen. Also, especially American the money aristocracy (=the billionares, Wall Street ppl) are not at all interested in a real war. The Russian leadership might be more trigger happy, since war and emergency situations are their basis of holding power. They do not offer their ppl anything else than at least the vibe of "being somebody". The have-not-propaganda.

Fortunately for all of us, there were 2 Russian Military Men who were (this is my opinion) Heros to the Human Race. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, a Russian submarine captain was under direct orders to launch the nuclear armed torpedo he was carrying if a certain set of circumstances were met. Well, those circumstances became a reality, and fortunately for humanity, the captain refused to launch the nuclear armed torpedo. He ended up surfacing close to a US Navy OHP Class Destroyer. The other Russian was in command of Nuclear ICBM Missile Silos and was responsible for launching them in retaliation of a US ICBM Attack. One night, his equipment detected multiple US ICBM's launched at Russia. He had only a short window of time to launch his missiles. If he didn't launch in that window of time, he wouldn't get a 2nd chance. Again, Fortunately for Humanity, a Russian in command of nuclear weapons did not launch as he felt that ALL of the equipment was malfunctioning at once, giving false information on a US ICBM launch. Humanity owes those 2 men our existence. There are other instances regarding nuclear weapons. However, those examples are of men not just blindly following orders but of senior officers that could and did think for themselves, unlike the examples of what we see today and every day in the news.
@gooner7212 күн бұрын
Indeed we do owe an enormous amount of gratitude to these men who were rational and intelligent enough to stop the actual destruction of the planet and the human race. SOP'S mean that you need more than just one man on board to agree on launching nuclear weapons so this fail safe system guarantees that one lunatic couldn't start something absolutely catastrophic if he just felt like it.

They could've tested it at full power with a ground-based test but wanted to demonstrate an actual working, deployable weapon. It was massive in size and weight, too much to be of real practical use, but the US had Ivy Mike at 30MT, and the race for bigger and bigger was on. The race was somewhat curtailed with the atmospheric test ban. Both sides had demonstrated that you could make weapons more or less as large as you wanted, and at that point, ICBMs and SLBMs were becoming more and more feasible as first/second strike weapons anyway. I have to laugh when people talk about the Russian nuclear arsenal being non-functional, etc. What percentage of thousands of warheads and delivery platforms need to be operational to throw us back to the stone age? @@bobecks66 not all of them, actually. Go look up the video by Emplemon about the man Stanislav Petrov, who, for a brief amount of time (like half an hour) was the single most powerful human being in the history of the planet. And probably always will be. He was a Russian member of the army who was posted at a station that detected nuclear missiles that were launched from the US towards the USSR. And he got a warning saying that the US had indeed launched a bunch of nukes. And so Petrov had been trained to report this to his superiors, and if he had actually done so, the USSR would have launched counter nukes towards the US, and the US would have sent back more towards the USSR, and the world would have ended, all humans would have been killed. This was in the mid 1980s at one of the very highest tension eras of the entire cold War. But Petrov disobeyed his orders, and chose not to report the incoming nukes, because he had a hunch that it was an error and that the computer was mistakenly saying there were missiles when there weren't. And luckily he turned out to be correct. The US hadn't launched any nukes after all. He decided to give the earth, and humanity, a chance to keep living, instead of deciding to end our species and every other species on the planet. Because he _WASN'T_ corrupt and evil. He had the power to end the world, by reporting what his computers and the radars were telling him, but he decided not to, at great personal risk to himself and his career. And because of that decision, we're all alive today. He literally saved the world, when he had the power to end it.

Originally the USSR relied on ultra high yield thermonuclear warheads ( typ. fission boosted fusion) because they couldn’t attain the same level of C.E.P. Accuracy of U.S. re-entry vehicles. But eventually they caught up and also adopted MIRV technology… not sure why they still feel the need to put a 50MT warhead on anything these days. (50MT is likely propaganda, but several of their warheads definitely are >=5MT). Interesting fact about the Tsar bomba though: relative to its yield, it was one of the “cleanest” nuclear detonations ever, with very little fallout. Because most of its yield was the result of D2/T3 fusion, and it was an airburst detonation at 11,000’ there was very little fission fragment radionuclides blown into the stratosphere. And within about an hour, the radiation levels at ground zero where safe enough for humans without radiation PPE.

A Russian sub commander had to make a call to launch a nuke at the US after a report was issued and he was instructed to launch. He stood down and defied the command to launch, when they realized it was a glitch and told him to stand down, when he already made up his mind and did NOT launch on command. He wasn't recognized or congratulated until, something, like, 30 years later... you'll have to look it up yourselves. I forgot the guys name. The US had a couple similar incidences as well. We've came WAY WAY WAAAAY to close already to ALL of us being dead YEARS ago. The scary fact IS, nothing is "full proof" and accidents happen. WW3 MAY just happen BY F**KING ACCIDENT!!!

Not all. While the poor and middle to upper class with certainty die in the hundreds of millions, the rich will live. It would take about 3-4 million to build and stock a nuclear proof bunker, but your location when the SITF (shit hits the fan) will determine if you make it. A empty bunker does no one any good, so being able to reach it in time is paramount. You are going to need three things depending on how far it is. Helicopter, jet and car along with pilot, are going to be the most important things in whether you live or die.
