It could work I'd argue. Since the pressure that deep in the ocean is a steady constant whilst hitting it with the extinguisher is a sudden abrupt force. Pressure is different to hitting something as the instantaneous kinetic energy has to go somewhere. But it's a movie in the end. We didn't come here for realism considering what the film is about.

I liked the way they dealt with feminism, they were very clear that skill and knowledge were responsible for success at many tasks, they measured value by actions not the characters themselves belonging to one group or another There's the part where two of them drag an unconscious member of the party, but he thanks them for it when he wakes up, it was never about women being perfect while men suck at everything, never using that moment to make a statement My favorite is the part where they're clearly mirroring the infamous scene where Ripley strips in order to fit in the suit, which is seen as either an empowering moment or cheap sex appeal.I digress, the same event happens here as well, A character literally tells the protagonist she needs to take off most of her clothes to fit, but her doing this is off screen, they draw specific attention to the fact that she has to disrobe but doesn't show us on purpose

I think if anyone knows 1% about diving this movie is about as realistic as those people having miraculously grown gills to survive. About drilling in the trench. . . . . .we can barely keep oil rigs with massive drill depths in the ocean good, safe, functional, not have horrible mishaps, etc. currently so doing this all underwater when we still using a diving bell to send people down to do work. . . . . . . . . .I think we will have to be down there because being on top of the water and on land will be so bad with global warming we will be melting and the oceans temps will have changed so much we probably created the things in this movie.
