Now that NASA has discovered water beneath the surface of Mars, approximately 10 kilometers deep, should we dare to tap into it? Where there is water, there could be life-perhaps even hostile life. If Mars’ shale rock porosity versus depth can be estimated from seismic data, as it can on Earth, (google: “Sediment dewatering in the Macran accretionary prism”) , then one can also determine Mars’ rock-forming mechanism and geothermal gradient, as can be done on Earth (google “Proposed Method for Shale Compaction Kinetics”)
