We all know that the easter island heads have bodies - that’s not a mystery at all. But how did the easter island population build hundreds of statues? Scientists have recently solved this mystery and discovered where these people disappeared to and why.
For many decades, people's minds have been occupied with the mystery of Easter Island. A remote piece of volcanic soil, far away in the Pacific Ocean... But our planet hosts thousands of such lonely islands, what is so particular about this one?
The mystery is concealed not in the island itself but giant stone statues covering it. Who created the world-famous huge stone heads? Did they serve any specific purpose? Where did their creators arrive from and where did they disappear?
Well, it seems the answer is finally just around the corner!

SUMMARY
- Where is Easter Island located?
Rapa Nui (which is the name given to Easter Island by its first inhabitants) is the territory of Chile and is situated in the southern Pacific Ocean. And it is so, so far that you can easily consider it one of the most distant places on the world's map. It lies 1,200 miles away from Pitcairn, which is its closest neighbor.
- What's the main secret of the statues?
Most statues (834 out of 887) were carved from the material called tuff which is, in fact, compressed volcanic ash. Curiously, all the statues except one group face inland. It means their backs are turned to the ocean. Perhaps the reason for that was the belief that the statues were the protectors of the villagers that's why they overlooked the settlement. The only statues not fitting into this pattern can be found at Ahu Akivi, a sacred place for the people of Rapa Nui.
- Theories about how the statues had been moved.
One of the most popular ones among the lovers of mysteries was the belief that the statues had been created and moved by aliens. But even if you like this theory, we are sorry to debunk it. The stone the statues were built from originates from the island itself. The birthplace of most of the material was an extinct volcano situated in the north-east of Easter Island and not another planet.
- A new study about the island.
A new study has been conducted recently to specify the maximum number of the inhabitants in the heyday of the island's civilization.
The results arrived, and they were quite unexpected. It turned out that as many as 17 and a half thousand people could comfortably live on the island. At least 19 percent of the land could be covered with the fields of sweet potatoes that used to be the main source of food for the population. What is more, the islanders consumed quite a lot of seafood and fish.
- Why did people on Easter Island disappear?
At first, it was believed that the reason for such a decrease of the population was an ecocide. The natives cut out large forests and palm trees making spare room for moving the statues around as well as agriculture. They thought the trees were going to grow back fast enough. It was a misleading concept. The deterioration of the environment resulted in hunger. And this, in turn, led to wars and cannibalism.
Nowadays, however, such a theory has been proven wrong. First of all, Rapa Nui inhabitants seemed to be very talented agricultural engineers. They deliberately fertilized the fields with the volcanic rock. In fact, another research has shown that people had been living on the island for many centuries. And the population only started to decrease when Europeans began visiting.

Another mystery about the Island ( for me anyways ) is how was such a tiny and remote island discovered in the first place hundreds of years ago? It may seem to have been beyond the navigation technology, but it could have been a very simple explanation; birds. They release the birds on the boat out at sea and then follow the birds path, as they would instinctively find the nearest land.

I'm from the Pacific Islands, and from what I've learned, the clans of Rapa Nui would compete with each other by seeing who could carve bigger statues. It was a way to show dominance. And I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, but each statue that was carved is supposed to represent a member of their respective clans. And one common belief that most of us islanders share is that our ancestors were humongous. They were extremely tall and big. That may be why they were able to move the statues.

Evolution tells us that our ancestors were short. We’ve seen skeletons. A few thousand years ago, men that were 5 ft tall were considered tall. Now we consider that short. Utzi the iceman from 5k years ago was around that height.

Yes ages ago people had long lives, meaning they lived for hundreds and before that ,even thousands of years.they were much more taller (they were gigantic!),had much much more strength ! But you know every thing has its pros and cons, they were strong but didn't have much brains,at least much lesser than ours. Humans are constantly adapting so now,we may not be that strong physically, but mentally,we are getting better every day!

I’m native Polynesian and my grandpa always told me that Rapanui was the library of Alexandria of Polynesia. Everything from plants and people were archived there-even the Polynesian written language was preserved there. Several thousands of years ago people of the pacific would meet frequently at taputapuatea in raiatea (the Piko or center of Polynesia) to update each other of progress and expansion. A dispute broke out there at taputapuatea and the islands of the pacific started to live in isolation (I have a longer story of this that I will spare you from).

Pax Humana There are a lot of wonderful stories dying with the times because of lazy people like myself. I’m well into my adult life and sharing here has brought back some of the magic and mystery I felt when hearing stories from my youth. Coupled with the science and information today my amazement of the indigenous/aboriginal knowledge I’ve acquired in my youth has reawakened. In Polynesia we have an origin story called the kumulipo and in there it chants that the universe is constantly destroyed and rebuilt. The only animal to escape the last destruction was the he’e (octopus)-science today reveals that the cephalopod RNA is fascinatingly different from anything else other loving creature on this planet... I have hundreds of these inferences and I’ll try not to be lazy and write them down someday, I feel like my grandparents may be shaking their heads at us for not doing so...

What we need to do is think outside the box on this mystery. So that would need a big think tank, what is going on here? As this remains one of the biggest mystery yet to be solved. 1. Aside from being a monumental achievement possibly on one of the largest collections of "Stonemason monuments ever left behind", has earnt it the respect it so well deserves. Now to solve the why? 2. If I left you as in "Mankind" a puzzle to work out the least I would expect you to do is work it out. This is exactly one of those occasions. Who, why, would you leave such a puzzle behind. The obvious reason, is that at some point someone will work it out. That firstly it is a puzzle, and secondly it's trying to tell us a message, but that message will have to wait a long, long time. Here's the kicker' the people who left the message knew that their message and the secrets it holds would be brought to light when it was nearing the right time, which is clearly now. 3. The first and foremost question that one would rationally ask is in what direction/s do each of the heads point? Now the suggestion that it is over looking the tribe is both a little over dramatic and totally non-sensical. Yes, if you want to suggest or think they were so absorbed of themselves, you could allow yourself to reach that conclusion in a heartbeat, but really!!! Let's give this tribe a little more respect for being intelligent and have a more meaning purpose. 4. We know that all the materials came from the Island. We also know that all the heads point in one particular direction? What is symbolic about the shape of the head, as they are not a usual head shape? Do the tops of the heads point to any star constellation in our Universe? Is the line of sight if drawn around the globe tie in with any coincidental location that would be some testimony to this tribe? If you join all the dots of where the heads are placed around the Island does it form a big arrow pointing to what? Exactly? 5. Historians throughout the centuries have been left pieces of a puzzle which eventually all interlocks to form the "Big Picture" my understanding is that big picture is the same as "As Above, So Below" we just have to work it out. Just the same way that the "Great Pyramids of Giza" on Earth represents "Orion" up above!

I read a short story once that claimed a clever cat went into the whirling portal to the alternate dimension and fought off the sock-stealing creature. -- Unfortunately, I still lose a sock now and then, so I guess the brave cat didn't win entirely, though in the story, he returned triumphant. -- Still no idea why all those socks get stolen. I mean, are there creatures with lots of cold feet who need more good socks? But why don't they take 'em in pairs? It's such a mystery! :D

I have been to Easter Island twice. I spent a total of four weeks on the island. In the late 1960’s and early 70’s the USAF had a base there. I installed a Sea/Air Rescue communications station there for the Chilean Air Force and also helped close down the USAF base when it closed around 1971. No the fact that the statues had bodies was not discovered in 2012. This was well known decades before that. I knew about it in the late 60’s. They transported the statues on sleds that they pulled probably over rollers made out of tree trunks or heavy branches. Some of the places where the statues had been set up were used as burial sites. There were human skulls and other bones readily visible there.

You HAVE to read Thor Heyerdahl´s book Aku Aku about these statues, if you want to know more. He visited the island in 1957, lived there for more than a year, and eventually revealed most of what is known about them and their people. He was Norwegian, not American... He also wrote Kon-Tiki, which was made into a movie some years ago - I recommend the book, though! Enjoy.
