I have a new interpretation as well: In the shock, panic and horror of the seemingly eternal pumice and ashfall people died, orphaned children were gathered up and taken in by perfect strangers. Slaves cared for children, as well, and died protecting and attempting to comfort their charges. That is far more likely than the suggestions being made here.

So, in other words, modern archaeologists are doing the exact same thing now that they are accusing past archaeologists of doing back then. Making assumptions about a culture they know very little about by applying their contemporary ideology and values to a past society. In another 100 years there will be a new group of archaeologists coming up with a completely different scenario! And so the vicious cycle rolls merrily onward!

Hang on! You are making assumptions about archeologists. The speaking voice was mentioned sex roles, family types like the nuclear family, implied sexuality, not any archaeologist. Archaeologists are not geneticists either. Now, saying there were two men, and two boys as indicated by bone fragment dna, in a house in Pompeii, means just that, nothing more. It has been noted that children often become separated from their parents. As to assumptions, people do that all the time. No one knows why their are drawings of a human in a lion skin, or why ancient humans went into dark deep caves to draw lions, bison, horses...and so on. They just did. I have no idea why people watch TikTok or Zombie movies.

Perhaps these people were simply pushed together by the pyroclastic flow. The two children may have been on an upper floor that collapsed, for example. The couple that were assumed to be related or lovers could have simply washed or been pushed together by accident. Or, like you said in the video, they simply ran in to get out of the pumice.

The North African might be a servant of the children’s family and the other person might just be a passersby who sought shelter. I will also point out that the archeologists are applying their own assumptions and biases. We really have to stop pretending that modern archaeologists are any less biased than previous ones because they aren’t. Technology doesn’t remove bias.

These poor people, servants, rich people, Romans or foreign, were thrown together in terror for their lives, probably going to die. I think in these dire and horrifying circumstances they would clutch and grab at anyone to seek some modicum of comfort. They would also probably embrace any children if they had become detached from their families. They were all absolutely terrified. It's hard to imagine now what they must have been feeling and gone through from the comfort of our armchairs. 😢

I was on a flight from Boston to Arizona and it was an extremely turbulent. The plane dropped a few hundred feet very suddenly and the man and I sitting next to each other hugged each other! This Doesn’t mean we were related, dating, married or even knew each other. Most everyone on the flight was crying and comforting each other. If the plane crashed, Assumptions could have been made about us if our bodies were found in an embrace. That is, Until they checked the flight manifest lists.

First, Roman families were not like “nuclear families” of our times. Second, Romans gave citizenship to their freed slaves, who could be from anywhere in the Empire (a policy that some ancient Greek historians found disturbing since Greek city states were far more exclusive as to who their citizens were). As a result, you might say that citizens of the Roman Empire were ethically very diverse, much like U.S. citizens today.

The same ideals of "modern life" that skewed the archeologist's viewpoints about Pompeii are the same judgmental mindset that interpreted the civilizations of the Indian Subcontinent as inferior. The hedonism displayed in carvings that they reviled in the temples of India, people engaged in copulation, the glorifying of these acts and the attitudes they found that are unfamiliar, made the British perceive the culture as wanton, crude and revolting. Now, Brits are much more relaxed about sexuality, much less rigid and uncompromising. It's sad that as Western civilization moves forward to a more tolerant, nuanced view of different cultures, America has chosen to move backward and embrace our intolerant past for our future.
