In this latest installment of “Scientists You Must Know” the Chemical Heritage Foundation (now Science History Institute) interviews organic chemist and pioneering steroid researcher George Rosenkranz.
Born in Hungary in 1916, George Rosenkranz studied chemical engineering in Switzerland and began a promising career as a steroid researcher. He joined the Syntex Corporation in 1945, where he spent his entire career, much of it as CEO and board chairman until his retirement in 1981. During his years with Syntex, Rosenkranz created and curated revolutionary advances in the intellectual understanding of and production techniques for steroid drugs, using native Mexican plant sources as raw materials. Syntex went on to become the leading supplier of the oral contraceptive pill and other corticoids, permanently changing social structures and medical advancements all over the world.
A charismatic leader with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Rosenkranz accumulated accomplishments that encompass every aspect of the steroid hormone industry. His name is on over 150 patents, and he published more than 300 research articles on steroid hormones. After he retired Rosenkranz maintained many roles within the industry, including his membership in the New York Academy of Sciences and positions on the board of governors of the University of Tel Aviv, the Weizmann Institute of Science, Digital Gene Technologies, and ICT Mexicana. Rosenkranz was also a world-class bridge player who authored 15 books on contract bridge in addition to winning 12 North American Bridge Championships.
